Use a legitimate Steam or Rockstar Games Store copy, update it to Rockstar Patch 1.200, and test the unmodified game before adding anything else. Rockstar’s official patch addresses the old 64-bit Windows memory and crash problems. If the picture is stretched or crashes continue, add the current third-party Widescreen Fix and SilentPatchBully one at a time, with backups. Windows 10 64-bit is the published minimum; Windows 11 may work, but no authoritative source guarantees a trouble-free result on every modern PC.
The reliable setup order
For most systems, the least risky path is to keep the installation as close to Rockstar’s supported configuration as possible, then add only the fix that addresses a specific symptom.
- Buy a legitimate PC copy. Steam requires a linked Rockstar Games third-party account. The Rockstar Games Store requires internet access and a Rockstar account for activation and periodic entitlement verification.
- Install the game normally through the store client and let the client finish any first-run Rockstar components.
- Confirm Patch 1.200 is installed. Rockstar identifies it as the latest PC update in its current support information. Do this before installing community DLLs or plugins.
- Launch the unmodified game once. Check that it reaches the main menu, creates a save, accepts your chosen input device, and displays at a usable resolution.
- Add display or stability fixes only if needed. ThirteenAG’s Bully: Scholarship Edition Widescreen Fix is aimed at modern aspect ratios. SilentPatchBully is an unofficial compatibility project aimed at crashes, memory handling, and frame pacing.
- Keep a rollback path. Back up the original executable, saves, and any files you replace before adding third-party files.
This order separates official support from optional modifications. It also makes troubleshooting much easier: if a problem appears immediately after one change, you know which change to undo.

Official PC requirements
Rockstar’s published requirements are minimum specifications, not a promise of a particular frame rate or of flawless operation on current hardware. Rockstar also notes that compatibility can vary and that requirements may change with downloadable content or programming changes.

The requirements do not include an authoritative minimum for Windows 11, a guaranteed average FPS, or a percentage of players who need third-party fixes. Treat those as unknowns rather than as performance promises.
Buy and install the PC edition
Steam installation
Open the official Steam listing for the PC edition, purchase it through your own account, and install it to a library folder with several gigabytes of free space. Steam identifies a linked Rockstar account as required. During the first launch, allow the Rockstar sign-in and entitlement checks to complete; blocking them can make a correctly installed game appear unavailable.
Rockstar Games Store installation
Use the official Rockstar Games Store listing and the Rockstar client. Rockstar states that internet access and a Rockstar account are required for activation and periodic verification. This does not mean the game must have an uninterrupted connection every second you play, but the client may need to validate ownership when you install, sign in, or change the installation.

Unofficial repacks can omit required files, alter the executable, or bundle malware. They also make it impossible to determine whether a crash comes from the game, a modified binary, or the repack itself. A legitimate installation gives you the official update path and a clean baseline for support.
Install and verify Patch 1.200
Rockstar’s Patch 1.200 page, updated August 18, 2026, describes the update as a compatibility fix that improves streaming performance and fixes random lockups and crashes on 64-bit Windows systems with more than 2 GB of RAM. Rockstar lists the download at approximately 15 MB.

Let Steam or the Rockstar client update the game automatically. If the client offers a file-verification command, run it after the update completes so missing or damaged original files are restored. Do not overwrite the executable with a community replacement before confirming that Patch 1.200 is present.
Signs that the official update is working
- The store client reports that the installation is current rather than waiting for a pending update.
- The game reaches the main menu without an immediate lockup.
- A new save can be created and loaded after restarting the game.
- The game can be closed and launched again without requiring a forced reboot.
These checks do not prove that every mission, resolution, or driver combination is compatible. They simply establish that the official baseline is functioning before optional changes are introduced.
Choose keyboard and mouse or a controller
Keyboard and mouse
Keyboard and mouse are officially supported. Start with the game’s own control screen, assign movement and camera actions, and test every essential action in a safe area before beginning a long session. If a key appears unresponsive, first check whether another program has captured the input and whether the game window has focus.
Xbox-layout controller
Rockstar and Steam list an Xbox 360 controller as supported. A current Xbox-layout USB gamepad is therefore a sensible optional accessory, but no particular brand or model is required by the official requirements. Connect it before launching the game, then select the controller in the game’s input options if that option appears.
If the game shows keyboard prompts while the controller works, that is a presentation issue rather than proof that the controller is unsupported. Reconnect the pad, close other controller-mapping utilities, and test with only one active gamepad. Avoid running multiple remappers at once because they can create duplicate or conflicting inputs.

Fix a stretched image or incorrect widescreen display
The original PC release predates today’s 16:9, 16:10, ultrawide, and high-resolution monitors. If the picture is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by an awkward border, use a current release of ThirteenAG’s Bully: Scholarship Edition Widescreen Fix rather than forcing a random resolution through a third-party launcher.

- Find the game directory that contains the Bully executable. In Steam, use the game’s local-files command to open that folder; in the Rockstar client, use its installed-game location.
- Download the current Bully: Scholarship Edition entry from ThirteenAG’s Widescreen Fixes Pack and read its release notes.
- Extract the fix into the directory containing the executable. Do not place it in a separate downloads folder or in the parent library folder.
- Launch the game and test the main menu, a save, and a camera-heavy scene. Check that the image is proportioned correctly and that menus remain readable.
ThirteenAG’s instructions also point users to SilentPatchBully. Install that component only if you need its separate stability or memory changes, and follow the current project instructions rather than copying an old file list from an archived guide. Third-party projects can change their filenames, supported versions, or installation method.
What a widescreen fix does not guarantee
A widescreen fix changes display presentation; it is not a universal crash cure and does not establish a safe frame-rate cap. The official sources do not guarantee that a 60 FPS setting is compatible with every mission, animation, or PC. If you experiment with frame pacing or an FPS limit, treat the result as version-specific third-party guidance and keep the original files available for rollback.
Stop crashes and lockups in a controlled way
1. Apply the official patch first
Patch 1.200 is the first action because it is Rockstar’s own compatibility fix for the 64-bit Windows and memory-related problems described above. Restart Windows after the update if the store client or Rockstar launcher requests it.
2. Remove variables from the test
- Temporarily move third-party DLLs, plugins, overlays, and graphics injectors out of the game directory.
- Disable recording overlays and hardware-monitoring overlays for one test session.
- Use the game’s native display settings before changing resolution through external tools.
- Verify the installation from the store client.
- Test a new save as well as your existing save, because a damaged save can mimic a general crash.
3. Consider SilentPatchBully
SilentPatchBully is an unofficial GitHub project. Its description says it fixes crashes on Windows 10, improves memory management, and attempts to improve frame pacing. It is not a Rockstar patch. Read the project’s current release notes, confirm that the release matches your edition, and copy the original executable and saves somewhere safe before installing it.

Add SilentPatchBully by extracting it to the same game directory that contains the executable, as directed by the current project documentation. Change one thing at a time and test the exact activity that previously failed. If the problem worsens, remove the added files and restore the backed-up originals.
4. Use Rockstar’s maximum-memory workaround only as a dated fallback
Rockstar’s separate slow/crash guidance documents setting Windows’ maximum-memory value to less than 2,000 MB, with 1,500 MB suggested as a starting point. This is a system-level workaround, not a normal recommendation for every current PC. It deliberately limits usable memory and can affect other software.
If you must test it, record the original setting first. Open Windows System Configuration, choose Boot, select Advanced options, enable Maximum memory, enter the value Rockstar specifies, apply the change, and restart. Test the game briefly. To undo the workaround, return to the same dialog, clear the maximum-memory option, apply, and restart again. Never leave the limit enabled for unrelated troubleshooting after the game test is complete.
5. Identify the failure pattern

Back up saves and original files
Before adding any DLL, plugin, or widescreen component, copy the original executable and the entire save-data folder to a location outside the game directory. Give each backup a date and note which patch was installed. Store clients can repair or replace modified files, so a separate backup prevents an update from destroying your rollback option.
When diagnosing a crash, restore the clean files first and reproduce the problem. Then reinstall only the one component that addresses the symptom. This is safer than stacking several old fixes and trying to guess which one changed the behavior.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 expectations
Windows 10 64-bit is Rockstar’s published minimum operating system. Patch 1.200 specifically addresses problems on 64-bit Windows systems with more than 2 GB of RAM, which includes the memory environment of most modern PCs. That is evidence of an official compatibility effort, not a blanket guarantee.
Windows 11 is not given a separate official success rate in the cited support material. Some systems may run the game without modification, while others may need the official patch, a widescreen fix, SilentPatchBully, or additional troubleshooting. There is no authoritative figure for average FPS, crash frequency, or the proportion of Windows 11 players who need third-party files, so do not treat a community anecdote as a universal result.

For a clean first attempt, use only the first row. Add the display fix when the aspect ratio is wrong, and add SilentPatchBully when crashes remain after the official update and clean-file tests. Avoid installing all options simultaneously.
What to expect from a modern-PC playthrough
The game’s official minimum specifications are easy for contemporary hardware to exceed, but old software can fail for reasons unrelated to raw CPU or GPU power. The practical goal is a reproducible setup: legitimate entitlement, current official patch, known input device, correct aspect ratio, and a documented rollback path.
If your installation reaches the menu, saves and loads reliably, displays correctly, and survives the activities that previously caused a crash, you have enough evidence to play. Do not infer from that test that every mission, monitor, driver, or Windows build will behave identically. Keep the backup until you have completed a substantial session without the original symptom.
