Beyond Words is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder in which you draw seven letter tiles, connect words on a persistent Scrabble-like board, and build a scoring engine with upgrades and power cards. You have up to five words per round to beat an escalating target; every third round is a boss challenge with an additional restriction.

The key to winning is not simply finding the longest word. Preserve future connections, route words through valuable special squares, and spend shop currency on modifiers that work together. The game accepts a much broader vocabulary than tournament Scrabble, and wildcard tiles can remove much of the spelling pressure while you learn.

What Beyond Words is

Beyond Words combines three familiar ideas:

  • Scrabble-style placement: letters form connected words on a board, and tile values contribute to the score.
  • Roguelike progression: each run has a sequence of increasingly difficult boards, rewards, shops and boss rounds. A failed run starts over with a new set of decisions.
  • Balatro-style deckbuilding: power cards, modifiers and permanent upgrades can multiply a normal word into a reliable scoring system.

The board is not cleared after a round. Your words remain in place, so every move changes the shape of later opportunities. A placement that scores well now may block the only route to a high-value square next round. Conversely, a modest word can create several useful hooks and become the foundation of a much stronger run.

Steve Ellis described the design in a 2026 PC Gamer interview: “With Beyond Words, the board plays a huge role—you’re constantly interacting with the words you’ve already played, planning for future moves and finding new strategies as your run evolves. It feels more open and flexible.” That persistence is the biggest difference from playing isolated Scrabble turns.

Your first run: the complete turn loop

Use this sequence whenever you start a new run:

  1. Draw seven letters. The game gives you a rack of seven tiles from its bag. Inspect their point values, wildcard symbols and possible hooks before placing anything.
  2. Study the current board. Identify existing word ends, open crossing spaces and special squares. Because the board survives between rounds, mark routes that could support your next several placements.
  3. Place a legal connected word. Your word must connect to the words already on the board according to the game’s placement rules. A first placement establishes the board; later placements extend or cross existing letters.
  4. Check the score preview. Before committing, compare the base tile points, word-length reward, multiplier effects and any special-square benefit. A shorter word can be better if it activates a multiplier or leaves several strong connections.
  5. Use up to five words in the round. You do not have to spend all five plays. Stop once the target is safely beaten if an additional word would consume a valuable route or tile combination.
  6. Read the round result. Meeting the target advances the run and preserves your board. Falling short ends the run unless an active effect provides another option.
  7. Visit the shop. Spend the money or rewards earned during the round on tiles, boost cards, permanent effects or power cards. Buy for the build you are actually developing, not for an abstract idea of the perfect deck.
  8. Prepare for the next board. Every third round is a boss round. Read its restriction before choosing your shop purchases or committing your strongest tiles.

How board placement works

Connections matter more than isolated words

A legal word must connect with the words already played. Think in terms of anchors: an open letter at the edge of a word, a blank square that can be crossed, or a short suffix that can accept several endings. Keep multiple anchors alive whenever possible. If you use your only open position to make a high-scoring word, the next rack may contain no practical way to play.

Try to create intersections rather than long dead-end lines. An intersection lets one future word use letters from two directions and makes awkward racks easier to place. The best early move is often the one that gives you two or three follow-up routes, even when its immediate score is ordinary.

The board persists between rounds

Unlike a fresh Scrabble board each turn, Beyond Words keeps the map and your placed words. Before every placement, ask three questions:

  • Which empty spaces can still be reached from the words on the board?
  • Will this word seal off a lane or leave a useful vowel, consonant or wildcard hook?
  • Can a later word travel toward a special square without forcing an inefficient detour?

When a target is already secured, use the remaining play only if it improves the board’s future geometry or activates a worthwhile reward. A spectacular word that isolates the rest of the map can cost more than it earns.

Special squares are long-term resources

Each run uses a shaped map containing special spaces. Landing a scoring word on one can permanently upgrade a tile, add an effect to a card or provide shop money. These rewards are persistent advantages rather than one-turn bonuses, so route planning is part of your economy.

Do not chase every special square. Compare its benefit with the scoring and connection value of the route required to reach it. A nearby square that preserves two future hooks is usually better than a distant square that forces a dead-end placement. If a special square upgrades a tile you use repeatedly, it can justify a lower-scoring word now because the benefit compounds over later rounds.

How scoring is calculated

A word’s score combines the point values printed on its letter tiles, a word-length score and a multiplier. Modifiers can change any of those layers or trigger them more than once.

Scoring element What it does Beginner use
Letter-tile points Adds the base value of each tile used in the word. Use high-value letters when they also fit a productive connection; do not sacrifice the board merely to spend one expensive tile.
Word-length reward Rewards longer words independently of their letter values. Keep common extensions and a few vowels available so you can turn a decent rack into a longer word when the board permits.
Multiplier Scales the score after the applicable bonuses are calculated. Build enough base points first; a multiplier applied to a tiny word is less useful than a modest multiplier attached to a repeatable scoring pattern.
Seven-tile bonus Using all seven drawn tiles grants a 100-point bonus. Attempt a seven-tile play when the board and rack support it, but do not destroy future connections solely to claim the bonus.

The 100-point all-seven bonus is reported by Thinky Games and applies when one word uses the entire seven-tile rack. Treat it as a major spike, not as your only plan: targets rise throughout a run, and a repeatable engine is more dependable than occasional perfect racks.

Why combinations beat isolated bonuses

Modifiers, stickers, enhancements, boost cards and power cards can increase tile values, retrigger letters, improve word-length rewards or add multipliers. Their value depends on interaction. A retrigger effect becomes stronger when it repeats a tile whose value has already been enhanced. A word-length bonus matters more when your board and dictionary access let you form longer words consistently.

Before buying an effect, identify the part of your scoring that is currently weakest. If you already have a strong multiplier but lack base points, purchase tile value or a way to replay high-value letters. If your words are short because of board geometry, a placement or upgrade effect may outperform another multiplier. Build around the words and routes your run is actually offering.

Purchase type Typical function When it is most useful
Extra tiles Expands or improves the letters available for future plays. When your racks repeatedly lack vowels, useful consonants or a way to reach existing board hooks.
Boost cards Raises values for particular word lengths or scoring patterns. When your board naturally produces the supported lengths and you can trigger the card often.
Permanent effects Provides lasting benefits such as lower shop prices or other run-wide advantages. Early in a run, when several future shop visits can repay the investment.
Power cards Behave like Balatro-style jokers: they add points, create upgrade squares or reshape scoring. When they reinforce an existing plan instead of asking you to abandon your current board and rack patterns.

A practical buying order

  1. Fix reliability first. If you cannot place words consistently, an extra tile or a board-improving effect is usually more valuable than a high multiplier.
  2. Choose one scoring direction. Decide whether your run is leaning toward long words, enhanced letters, repeated triggers or special-square rewards.
  3. Add a multiplier after the base is dependable. Multipliers scale a working engine; they do not replace one.
  4. Value permanent discounts early. A lower-price effect has more time to pay back when purchased before several remaining shops.
  5. Sell or skip effects that do not trigger. A powerful card with no realistic activation condition is occupying a slot and consuming currency that could improve your actual route.

Dictionary rules and wildcard tiles

Beyond Words uses a permissive dictionary rather than the narrow word list associated with tournament Scrabble. Names, slang, proper nouns and swear words can be accepted. That means you should test plausible words instead of assuming a familiar name or informal term is invalid.

Tile Meaning Best beginner use
Asterisk (*) Stands for any vowel. Keep it for a difficult connection, a longer word or a special square that requires a vowel you do not have.
Question mark (?) Stands for any letter. Use it to complete an awkward hook, reach a high-value space or preserve a seven-tile opportunity.

Wildcards reduce spelling friction, but they still have opportunity cost. Spending one on a low-value two-letter repair may leave you unable to connect a much stronger word next round. When the target is already met, save a wildcard unless the placement also improves your board position or activates a permanent reward.

How to handle escalating targets and boss rounds

Build for consistency as targets rise

Round targets increase as the run advances. Early success can come from opportunistic high-value letters, but later rounds require a scoring pattern you can reproduce with ordinary racks. Track which word lengths, tile types and power-card effects are actually generating points. If your score depends on drawing one rare letter, your build is fragile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the first rounds to establish a stable base: several open board connections, at least one dependable word-length pattern and a shop plan that improves future hands. Once that base is working, add multipliers and retriggers rather than replacing it with a completely different strategy.

Every third round is a boss round

Boss rounds add an extra restriction. The restriction can change which placements, letters or scoring patterns are practical, so read it before you play your best tiles. A normal high-scoring line may be unusable under the boss rule, while a saved wildcard or an apparently modest power card may become essential.

  1. Read the boss condition before entering the board.
  2. Identify which of your current scoring effects still function under that condition.
  3. Reserve the wildcard, high-value tile or flexible power card that solves the restriction.
  4. Prefer a safe sequence of words over one enormous opening score; you still need to reach the target within the round’s play limit.
  5. After the boss, reassess your shop plan because the board shape and available routes may now favor a different word length or connection.

Beginner strategy checklist

  • Inspect the whole map before placing. Look beyond the immediately available word and identify valuable squares you can reach in two or three moves.
  • Keep more than one anchor. A board with several open connections is insurance against an awkward rack.
  • Spend all seven tiles selectively. The 100-point bonus is excellent, but a seven-tile word that ruins the board can lose more points later.
  • Save wildcards for leverage. Difficult boss restrictions, premium routes and seven-tile setups are better uses than routine repairs.
  • Buy synergy, not novelty. A card that triggers every round generally beats a stronger card that rarely has the right word or board position.
  • Use special squares as part of your economy. A permanent tile upgrade or shop-money reward can be worth more than a slightly larger immediate score.
  • Stop when the target is secure. An unnecessary fifth word can consume a useful tile, close a route or expose a board to a worse future shape.
  • Plan one round ahead. Keep likely vowels, flexible consonants and a usable hook for the next rack instead of treating each round as an isolated puzzle.

Beyond Words compared with Scrabble and Balatro

Feature Beyond Words Classic Scrabble Balatro
Word legality Permissive dictionary that can accept names, slang, proper nouns and swear words. Uses the edition’s designated word list; tournament play is more restrictive. No word placement or dictionary system.
Board persistence Words remain on the shaped map between rounds, so routes and future connections matter. The board is normally one match that develops until the game ends, not a sequence of roguelike rounds. Uses poker hands rather than a spatial word board.
Scoring Combines tile points, word length, multipliers, modifiers, retriggers and a 100-point seven-tile bonus. Counts letter values and premium squares, with a seven-tile bonus under the standard rules. Escalates poker-hand scores through jokers, consumables and multipliers.
Round structure Up to five words per round, rising targets and a boss every third round. Players alternate turns until the match ends; there are no roguelike boss rounds. Hands and blinds escalate, with boss blinds changing the rules.
Wildcards Asterisks represent any vowel; question marks represent any letter. Wild tiles, where included by a particular edition, follow that edition’s rules. Does not use letter wildcards.
Progression and purchases Shops offer tiles, boost cards, permanent effects and joker-like power cards during a run. Physical play has no in-match upgrade shop. Shop purchases and joker combinations are central to run progression.
Platforms Digital release on Steam, with Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox storefront listings also identified by Thinky Games. Primarily a tabletop game, with separate digital adaptations. Digital game with its own platform availability.

So, Beyond Words is not simply “Scrabble with Balatro cards.” Scrabble supplies the connected-letter vocabulary and positional scoring, while Balatro supplies the run structure, escalating targets, shop decisions, synergistic power cards and boss-style rule changes.

Using a physical Scrabble board to learn the fundamentals

A classic Scrabble board game can help you practice the transferable part of Beyond Words: making connected words while preserving future hooks. Focus on crossing words, spotting vowel-consonant balance and evaluating whether a premium square is worth the route. The physical game’s official rules also explain letter values, premium squares and the seven-tile bonus that inspired part of Beyond Words’ scoring vocabulary.

The exercise will not reproduce Beyond Words’ shops, persistent roguelike map, wildcard symbols or power-card combinations. Use it to improve spatial word planning, then return to the digital game to learn how modifiers and boss restrictions alter those decisions.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Chasing the biggest word every turn

Problem: You score well once but leave no useful connection for the next rack.

Fix: Compare immediate points with the number and quality of future anchors. Take the lower score when it keeps a productive lane open.

Buying unrelated power cards

Problem: Your shop contains several attractive effects, but none triggers consistently with your board and word lengths.

Fix: Choose one build direction and buy effects that activate under the same conditions. Reliability matters more than the printed maximum.

Using wildcards too early

Problem: A wildcard solves a small word, then a boss round or special square demands the flexibility you spent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Hold wildcards until they either unlock a difficult connection, preserve a high-value route or complete a seven-tile scoring opportunity.

Ignoring the boss restriction

Problem: You enter a boss round with a plan that the new rule invalidates.

Fix: Read the condition first, then select tiles and shop effects that remain usable. Treat the boss rule as a planning constraint, not a surprise during placement.

Confusing a permissive dictionary with unlimited legality

Problem: You assume every plausible string will be accepted because names and slang are allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Test the word in the game. The dictionary is broad, but acceptance is still determined by Beyond Words’ own word list.

Bottom line

Play Beyond Words as a connected-board strategy game first and a word-finding game second. Draw seven tiles, preserve several future routes, use up to five words to clear the rising target, and spend shop resources on a coherent engine of tile value, word-length rewards, multipliers and retriggers. Save wildcards for leverage, read every boss restriction before committing, and treat special squares as investments in the rest of the run. That combination of spatial planning and Balatro-style build management is what makes the game distinct from both of its influences.
