Yes—you can usually install and launch an imported physical PS5 game while signed in to your normal local PSN account. Insert the disc, let the PS5 copy the game, and start it from the local profile. The important restriction appears when you add anything from PlayStation Store: DLC, add-ons, in-game currency and voucher codes must match the country/region for which the disc or code is licensed and the country/region of the account.
Check the disc’s licensed region before buying. Your PSN account’s country/region is fixed when the account is created, so a mismatched purchase cannot be corrected by editing the existing account later. If a title’s downloadable content is essential, you may need a second PSN account created for the disc’s region, and the publisher may impose additional rules for language, saves or online services.

What an imported PS5 game is—and what the console actually checks
An imported game is a physical PlayStation 5 game disc sold for a country or region different from the one selected on your PSN account. The disc itself contains the base game data. Content that you obtain separately through PlayStation Store—such as an expansion, cosmetic pack, season pass, virtual currency or a redemption voucher—is a separate transaction tied to regional licensing.

The PS5 user manual lists PlayStation 5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs as playable media. That is why a disc purchased abroad can generally be installed and launched from a local profile without creating a foreign account. This does not promise identical behavior for every title: a publisher can require an online service, a particular account, a language download or another entitlement before some features work.

Think of the purchase as two products:
- Base game on the disc: installed from the physical media and normally started by the local account.
- Store content: downloaded or redeemed separately and subject to a country/region match.
Keeping those products separate explains why the game may start successfully while a later DLC purchase fails.
Check the region before you buy
Find the disc’s licensed country or region
Look at the small-print licensing information on the front or back of the game box. PlayStation Support specifically advises buyers to check this marking or ask the retailer which country/region license applies. Do not rely only on the seller’s shipping location; a retailer can ship a disc that was originally licensed for a different market.
Record the exact edition as well as the region. Special, deluxe and “complete” packages can include a voucher rather than putting every item on the disc. The base disc may work locally even when the included code cannot be redeemed by your account.
Confirm the country/region of your local account
In a browser, sign in to Account Management, open Your Information, then edit Residential Address. The account’s country/region is displayed there. On a family console, check the profile that will actually purchase or redeem Store content; another profile’s region does not change the purchaser’s account.
PlayStation does not allow a country/region to be changed after an account is created. Creating a new account is therefore a planning decision, not a temporary setting you can toggle for one download.
Use this buying checklist
- Read the licensed country/region printed on the box or confirmed by the retailer.
- Compare it with the country/region shown in Account Management.
- Ask whether the edition contains physical bonus content or a region-locked voucher.
- Check the publisher’s listing for included languages and any required online service.
- Decide whether you need DLC, a season pass or in-game currency before committing to an import.
Install and launch the imported disc with your local account
- Sign in to the intended local profile. Use the PSN account you normally use for saves and trophies. You do not need to sign out and create a foreign account merely to test the base disc.
- Insert the PS5 disc. Place the disc label-side up in the drive model’s orientation. The game tile appears on the home screen when the console recognizes the media.
- Allow the installation to finish. The PS5 copies data from the disc and may download patches. Keep the disc inserted whenever the physical license is required to start the game.
- Start the game from the local profile. Select the game tile and wait for the title screen. If the publisher requires an account link or a service sign-in, follow that title’s on-screen instructions.
- Install updates only after checking storage and network access. A patch can be large and may be required for online play, but it does not change the disc’s licensed region.
The successful launch confirms that the base product is usable on the console; it does not prove that every Store entitlement will recognize the disc.

Why DLC, add-ons and virtual currency are the main risk
PlayStation Support states: "Game discs must be licensed for use in the same country/region as your account for you to use PlayStation Store content (such as add-ons or in-game currency)." A disc from one market and a Store account from another can therefore produce a working base game with an add-on that is unavailable, incompatible or not detected.

| Base PS5 game | Installed from the physical disc | The PS5 manual lists PS5-format game discs as playable; publisher-specific restrictions can still apply. |
| DLC or expansion | Downloaded from PlayStation Store | The disc license and account country/region must match for Store content to be used. |
| In-game currency | Purchased through Store or in-game checkout | Subject to the same disc/account region requirement. |
| Voucher or bonus code | Redeemed in PlayStation Store | The voucher and account country/region must match; a code bundled with an import may fail on a local account. |
| Patch or system update | Downloaded by the console | It updates the installed game but does not convert the disc to another region. |
Physical-on-disc bonuses versus download codes
Two boxes with similar names can contain different entitlements. If a bonus is printed on the disc, it is part of the physical package. If the box says “redeem code,” the code is governed by the account country/region rules. Ask the seller which type is included before assuming that a “complete” edition contains usable local DLC.
What happens when regions do not match
Possible symptoms include a Store page that will not offer the add-on, a code error during redemption, an installed expansion that does not appear in the game, or virtual currency that cannot be delivered. These outcomes are licensing and entitlement problems rather than evidence that the PS5 drive cannot read the disc.
When a matching-region PSN account helps
If the imported edition requires Store content, create a separate PSN account with the country/region that matches the disc’s license. PlayStation account creation asks you to select a country/region, and that choice cannot be changed later. Use accurate account details and review the payment options available in that market; a locally issued payment method may be required.
Keep expectations title-specific. A matching account can make a compatible Store listing or voucher redeemable, but it does not guarantee:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- that every language is available in the imported edition;
- that saves will transfer between accounts;
- that trophies earned on one account will merge with another;
- that the publisher’s online service accepts connections from every territory;
- that a local payment card or wallet can fund the foreign account.
Use the matching account only for the purchase or redemption that needs it, then test the game with the profile you intend to use. Some publishers bind DLC to the purchasing account rather than to the console, so read the title’s support information before spending money.

Share eligible purchases on the same PS5
PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play is controlled at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony says this setting can share purchases and some subscription benefits with other users on that PS5. It can be useful when one profile owns compatible Store content and another profile plays the imported disc.
Sharing is not a region converter. It cannot change the disc’s license, make an incompatible voucher redeemable or guarantee that a publisher will authorize cross-account DLC. Enable it only on the PS5 you control, and check the title’s own licensing behavior if an add-on remains locked.
Online multiplayer and PlayStation Plus
PlayStation’s terms say that online multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription for the relevant account, subject to the Console Sharing and Offline Play conditions. A disc that launches offline can still require the subscription when you select multiplayer.

Before buying an import for online use, verify the publisher’s service support for your territory. Factors such as server availability, age restrictions, account linking and required updates can vary by game. A matching-region account may solve a Store entitlement issue but is not a guarantee that the online service will accept your local connection or transfer your progress.
Common failure points and the right fix
The disc installs but a DLC pack is missing
Check the country/region printed on the disc package and compare it with the account that bought the add-on. If they differ, the Store license is the likely cause. Do not buy the same add-on repeatedly on the local account; first determine whether the matching-region account is required and whether the publisher allows that content to be shared on one PS5.
A bundled voucher will not redeem
Read the error message and the code’s printed market information. Voucher activation requires the account country/region to match the voucher. A local account cannot be edited to another country after creation, so redemption may require the account region for which the code was issued.

The game asks for a language you cannot select
Language support is edition-specific. Check the exact publisher or retailer listing rather than assuming that an imported disc contains the same voice or subtitle options as a local release. A system-language change cannot add files that were not included or offered for that edition.
The imported game will not go online
Confirm that the game is patched, the console is connected, and the playing account meets the PlayStation Plus requirement. Then check whether the publisher limits service access by territory or requires a separate account link. These checks distinguish a subscription or server issue from a disc-region issue.
Saves or trophies are not visible on another account
Save data and trophy records are associated with the profile that created them. Moving to a matching-region account for DLC does not automatically merge that history. Decide which account will be your primary player profile before beginning a long campaign.

| Your situation | Recommended setup | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| You only want the physical base game | Insert the disc and play on your normal local account | Disc format, console drive compatibility and any publisher-specific requirement |
| You need DLC from the same market as the disc | Use an account whose country/region matches the disc license | Store listing, payment method, voucher rules and whether sharing is supported |
| You received a bonus code with the import | Redeem it on the account region printed for the code | Code market and expiration or promotional conditions |
| You want local multiplayer | Use the local profile for saves, with the required subscription or console-sharing setup | PlayStation Plus requirement and the publisher’s online-service policy |
| You are choosing between two imported editions | Prefer the edition whose disc license matches the account you will use for Store purchases | Language options, physical versus downloadable bonuses and service support |
A safe purchase-and-setup sequence
For the lowest risk, make the region decision before paying rather than after opening the box.
- Ask the retailer to state the disc’s licensed country/region in writing.
- Check your local account’s country/region in Account Management.
- Compare the two and list every downloadable item you expect to use.
- Confirm whether those items are on the disc or supplied as vouchers.
- Check language, online-service and payment requirements for the exact edition.
- Buy only after deciding which account will own Store content and which account will hold your saves.
- Install the disc, apply updates and test the base game before purchasing optional content.
- If DLC is necessary, use the matching-region account and configure Console Sharing only after reviewing the publisher’s licensing terms.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Japanese, UK or US PSN account just to start an imported PS5 disc?
No. Start by inserting the disc and signing in to your usual local profile. A foreign account becomes relevant when the title’s Store content or voucher is licensed to that market.
Can I change my existing PSN account to the disc’s country later?
No. PlayStation says the country/region selected when an account is created cannot be changed. A separate account is the available route when a matching region is required.

Will a local account’s save work if I buy DLC on a matching-region account?
There is no universal guarantee. Save ownership, DLC licensing and publisher account links differ by title, so check that game’s support documentation before relying on a cross-account setup.
Does Console Sharing make every imported add-on available to every profile?
No. The setting can share purchases and some subscription benefits on that PS5, but it does not remove regional licensing or publisher restrictions. Test the specific add-on after enabling it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play an imported PS5 disc offline on my normal account?
Usually, yes: install the PS5-format disc and launch it from the local profile. Keep the disc inserted when the physical license is checked.
Are imported PS5 games region locked?
The base disc is generally playable on a PS5, but Store content, vouchers and some online features depend on the disc and account country/region matching.
What should I check before buying imported DLC?
Confirm the disc’s licensed region, the purchasing account’s country/region, whether the bonus is a code or on-disc, and the publisher’s language and online-service rules.
