Start with QuickTime Player, which is already on your Mac. If it will not open the video, try VLC or IINA. These players cover many common formats, but no player is guaranteed to play every file: the container, video and audio codecs, file condition, Mac hardware, and macOS version all matter.
Try QuickTime Player first
For a local video, open it from Finder. You can also open QuickTime Player and choose File > Open File, then select the video. Apple documents playback controls, picture-in-picture, playback speed, and AirPlay-related features in its QuickTime Player guide.
If QuickTime plays the file, there is no need to install another player. If it refuses, reports an error, or cannot play its audio or video properly, try the same file in another player before changing the file.
If QuickTime will not play it, try VLC or IINA
Install VLC from VideoLAN’s official Mac download page or IINA from its official project repository. Avoid third-party “codec pack” download pages. A different player may support the file’s particular streams when QuickTime does not, but it cannot guarantee playback of every encoding or repair a damaged file.

IINA’s project describes features including subtitles, playlists, chapters, and picture-in-picture. VLC’s official Mac download page listed version 3.0.24 as a universal macOS download in a 2026 observation; versions and requirements can change, so consult the live page rather than relying on that version number.
Why an MP4, MOV, or MKV may still fail
A filename extension identifies a type of container, not every detail of what is inside. A container can hold encoded video and audio streams, subtitles, and metadata. Compatibility depends on the actual container, codecs, codec configuration, and the player’s support for them. Renaming a file from .mkv to .mp4 or .mov does not convert its contents.

Apple documents a file-identification problem that can occur when an MPEG-4 file has an incorrect .mov extension or MIME type. That is a reason to verify what the file actually contains rather than assume its extension is correct. For background, see Apple’s documentation on the file type compatibility atom.
Follow this troubleshooting path
- Open the original in QuickTime Player. In Finder, open the file, or launch QuickTime Player and choose File > Open File.
- Try the same file in VLC or IINA. If one plays it correctly, use that player unless you need the file in another app or workflow.
- If playback still fails, check the file and streams. Confirm that the file finished downloading or copying, then inspect its container, video codec, audio codec, profile or bit depth, and subtitle tracks. A truncated or damaged file may fail in every player.
- Convert a duplicate only if needed. Select an output format that fits the intended app or device, and verify that required audio and subtitle tracks survive. Keep the original. There is no single conversion preset established for every Mac and video file.
Apple’s MediaExtension framework lets developers add readers and decoders for formats macOS does not handle natively. It is a developer capability, not a general-purpose consumer codec pack recommendation.

When a video opens but plays poorly
Recognizing a codec and playing it smoothly are different things. A Mac may decode a demanding video in software rather than hardware, which can mean high processor use or dropped frames. Hardware decoding depends on the codec, Mac hardware, operating-system version, and player’s playback path; switching players may help compatibility but cannot make every high-resolution file run smoothly.
Apple says Apple devices provide hardware-accelerated decoding for H.264 and HEVC, and recommends HEVC for efficient 4K HDR delivery and playback. That guidance does not establish hardware decoding for every codec or every player on every Mac. See Apple’s Video technology overview for its scope and details.

Choose based on the file and your workflow
There is no universal winner established by a controlled, head-to-head format test. Compare players by whether they handle your actual file, your macOS version and hardware, your subtitle and audio needs, and ease of use. If a file works in VLC or IINA but not QuickTime, using the player that works is usually the simplest option. If another Apple app must import the video, identify the streams and that app’s requirements before converting.
