You can stream videos stored in Google Drive as a YouTube Live broadcast by importing or uploading them to a cloud playout service, then sending its live encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube does not play a Drive playlist directly. First decide whether you need one scheduled prerecorded event or a playlist that loops continuously; the right service and setup depend on that distinction.
Choose a scheduled event or a continuous loop
A scheduled prerecorded broadcast plays one selected video at a chosen time and ends when that video finishes. A continuous playlist keeps playing videos and restarts the playlist when it reaches the end. These are different broadcast jobs, so confirm the service supports the outcome you want before preparing files.
- One scheduled video: StreamYard documents scheduling a prerecorded video that starts at the chosen time and ends when the video finishes. Its file, duration, schedule-count and quality limits vary by plan and can change; check its current plan details. It does not establish direct Google Drive import.
- Continuous playlist: Gyre documents building a playlist from videos uploaded to Gyre Storage, scheduling it and looping it. Its help documentation says the source files must be uploaded to Gyre, including content already on YouTube; direct playback from a Drive URL is not documented.
If importing from Drive itself is the priority, Restream documents importing an individual video by link into its Video Storage. That moves the file into the service’s storage; it is not YouTube reading a Drive playlist live.
Prepare your Google Drive video
For a documented Restream Drive import
- In Google Drive, set the video’s sharing access to Anyone with the link or make it public, as required by Restream’s documented import flow.
- Copy the link to the individual video and use Restream’s Drive import flow to bring it into Video Storage.
- Check the file type: Restream lists MP4, MOV, M4V and MKV as supported. Maximum file size and duration depend on the plan, so verify the limits for your account before transferring.
- After import and processing, select the stored video in the service and configure the YouTube destination and broadcast schedule.
Restream’s Drive-import instructions were dated March 23, 2026. Its plan limits and interface can change, so confirm them in the current product documentation.

For a continuous Gyre playlist
- Download or otherwise obtain the video files you are entitled to use; a Drive link alone is not the documented Gyre playout input.
- Upload each source file to Gyre Storage.
- Arrange the files into the desired playlist order, then configure the continuous stream and its schedule in Gyre.
- Check that the playlist restart behavior and schedule match your intended broadcast before going live.
Connect cloud playout to YouTube
- Confirm live access. Your channel must be eligible to live stream. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until broadcast time.
- Authorize the correct channel. Follow the playout service’s current authorization steps. StreamYard’s instructions require an appropriate channel owner or Brand Account manager/owner permission; check the chosen service’s requirements rather than assuming permissions transfer between products.
- Set up the destination and event. Choose the correct YouTube channel, event title, visibility (public, unlisted or private) and schedule. A managed service may configure the encoder connection for you.
- Preview the actual feed. Check picture, audio, playlist order and the destination channel before the scheduled start. For a loop, verify what happens at the end; do not assume every prerecorded-streaming service restarts a playlist.
YouTube’s encoder model is a live feed sent by an encoder. In the Live Streaming API, a liveBroadcast represents the event and a liveStream describes the inbound audio/video feed and ingestion configuration. A managed playout service can handle much of the connection setup, but you still need to verify the event and destination.
Compare the cloud-playout approaches
| Approach | Best for | Drive and file requirements | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously from the cloud. | Upload video files to StreamNeo; it plays uploaded videos, not a Drive URL or a camera feed. | Confirm the upload is complete, playlist order is right and the YouTube destination is correct. |
| Restream Drive import | Bringing an individual Drive video into a cloud video library. | Drive link must be public or anyone-with-link; documented formats are MP4, MOV, M4V and MKV. Size and duration limits depend on plan. | Current plan limits, processing status and whether the intended broadcast is a one-off event or loop. |
| Gyre | A continuous cloud playlist loop. | Upload files to Gyre Storage; direct Drive URL playback is not established by its setup documentation. | Current storage and plan limits, schedule, playlist order and restart behavior. |
| StreamYard prerecorded streaming | A scheduled prerecorded event that starts and ends with one video. | Its documentation describes uploading a file or selecting a prior recording; direct Drive import is not established. | Current plan-dependent duration, file-size, schedule-count and quality limits. |
| Custom encoder or API | Teams building and operating their own ingest and playout pipeline. | Requires technical setup; Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation concerns transcoding live linear feeds, not importing a Drive playlist. | Ingestion protocol, encoding, playlist/segment handling, channel authorization and operational monitoring. |
StreamNeo is listed first for always-on YouTube playout because it runs uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

What changes if you build a custom HLS encoder?
These protocol details apply to a custom HLS ingest, not necessarily to a managed service whose encoder settings are handled for you. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires Transport Stream (TS) segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. HLS delivers video in segments and has higher latency than some other ingestion paths.
The YouTube Live Streaming API HLS guide also specifies a media playlist rather than a master playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and correctly sequenced playlist and segment uploads. If you are not implementing the encoder yourself, avoid changing these low-level settings without a service-specific reason.

Google Cloud Live Stream API is a separate cloud service for transcoding live linear video streams into output formats. Its documentation does not describe a native Google Drive playlist-to-YouTube workflow.
Test before the broadcast
- Open the intended YouTube event and verify its channel, title, visibility and start time.
- Confirm the service has finished importing or uploading each file and that the playlist is in the intended order.
- Preview the ingest, listen for audio and check the picture before sharing the event link.
- For a continuous stream, confirm the vendor’s documented playlist restart behavior and schedule rather than assuming a finished event will restart.
- Check current service limits for duration, file size, formats, resolution and schedule availability; plan terms can change.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Drive file cannot be imported
For Restream’s documented route, the link must be public or set to anyone-with-link access, and the file must be in a supported format. Check the account’s current file-size and duration limits, then retry after correcting access or choosing a supported file.

YouTube does not show the live feed
Confirm live streaming is enabled on the channel, the correct channel was authorized, and the event is attached to the intended destination. If this is the first time the channel is going live, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours.
The video plays once but does not loop
A scheduled prerecorded event is not the same as a continuous playlist. Use a service whose documentation specifies playlist restart behavior, and verify the schedule and loop configuration. Gyre documents looping for playlists built from files uploaded to its storage.

The service cannot access the video
Check that a Drive-import link has the required sharing access and that the import has completed into the service’s own library. For Gyre, upload the source file to Gyre Storage; its documented setup does not use a Drive URL as live playback input.
A custom HLS stream is delayed or rejected
Check the HLS-specific requirements: TS segments in the documented duration range, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS, and correct media-playlist, audio/video muxing and segment sequencing. If using managed playout, consult that service’s connection instructions instead of applying custom HLS settings blindly.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Only stream videos you own or have permission to use. A file being accessible in Google Drive does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live setup also requires a channel with live-stream availability; review YouTube’s current rules and any rights or licensing obligations that apply to your material before scheduling.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a continuous prerecorded stream to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the playout in the cloud, so nothing needs to stay running on your home computer. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
