Plan a bike commute around the route you can ride confidently, not just the one that looks shortest on a map. Compare quieter streets, bike paths and lanes, junctions, hills and road surfaces; then rehearse your chosen route before relying on it for a workday. A basic bicycle check, a predictable riding routine and a plan for your belongings and arrival can make the first commute more manageable.
Compare routes for comfort, not just distance
A driving route is not automatically a good cycling route. Routes with lower traffic speeds, less traffic or separated cycling facilities may feel more manageable, even if they take longer. NHTSA recommends choosing routes with less traffic and slower speeds and notes that a bike path or lane away from traffic may be a safer option. Cycling UK likewise describes routes that favor quieter backstreets and cycling facilities over the obvious motor route.
Use a route planner to find candidates, then compare at least two options against the factors that will shape your ride:
- Traffic: Consider vehicle speed and volume, not only whether a street has a bike lane.
- Junctions: Note complicated intersections, turns across traffic and crossings where you may need extra time or confidence.
- Facilities: Check whether paths or lanes are separated from traffic, and where they begin or end.
- Surface and hills: Look for rough or uneven sections and climbs that could affect comfort or timing.
- Distance and time: Estimate the ride realistically rather than assuming the fastest map result is the best fit.
- Light and alternatives: Consider visibility at your commute time and identify another route or a transit option in case of a closure.
Cycling UK’s route-planning guidance offers quietest, balanced and fastest route choices, a useful way to think about the trade-off rather than treating one route as best for everyone. A planner can misclassify a busy or uncomfortable road, so a line on a map is only a starting point—not proof that the route will feel safe.

Rehearse before your first workday
Ride your preferred route in daylight on a weekend or another low-pressure day. Time the trip at a comfortable pace, identify difficult turns and crossings, and check whether the route feels different from what the map suggested. If one section is stressful, try an alternative street or facility before making the commute part of your routine.
- Choose a candidate route and a fallback route or transit option.
- Ride the candidate in daylight without trying to beat a target time.
- Notice where you need to stop, where visibility is limited and which turns need more attention.
- Adjust the route and, if useful, repeat the rehearsal before commuting on a workday.
If traffic handling is the main concern, practice basic control away from traffic first. A local cycling-skills class or a ride with a more experienced cyclist may also help you build confidence. Availability and instruction vary by location.

Check the bicycle and prepare your gear
Before leaving, make sure the bicycle fits you and that its basic parts work. NHTSA’s bicycle equipment advice includes checking the brakes, tires, handlebars and seat. If you are unsure whether the bicycle is safe to ride, have it checked by a qualified bike mechanic rather than setting out and hoping for the best.
Wear a correctly fitted helmet. For riding at night or in poor visibility, use a white front light and a red rear light, along with reflectors; reflective clothing or accessories can help other road users see you. Requirements for helmets, lights, reflectors and where bicycles may be ridden vary by jurisdiction, so check your local transport authority or applicable law. Visibility equipment cannot guarantee that drivers will see you.

Decide how to carry work items before the first commute. A backpack or luggage secured to the bicycle can keep items contained; waterproof luggage may be useful in wet conditions. Keep loose clothing and laces clear of the drivetrain. If rain is forecast, consider appropriate waterproof clothing and whether the conditions make riding unsuitable.
Ride predictably and stay attentive
On the road, travel in the same direction as traffic, obey signs and signals, signal turns and ride in a predictable way. Scan ahead for road-surface hazards and keep your attention on traffic. Avoid phone use or headphones that distract you from what is happening around you. Bright colors and reflective gear may improve visibility, but safe positioning, lighting and attention still matter.

Rules differ by place, including requirements for lights and helmets and whether sidewalk riding is allowed. Follow the laws where you ride rather than assuming one country’s guidance applies everywhere. NHTSA reports that 1,103 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2024. That national figure is not an estimate of an individual commuter’s risk, and route planning alone cannot prevent every crash.

Pack your bag and lay out clothing the night before. This reduces last-minute decisions and helps you notice missing essentials before the morning commute.
Build the commute into your routine gradually
You do not have to begin by cycling every workday. Start with one or two days a week, choose a shorter or quieter route, or combine cycling with public transport if that makes the first step manageable. After a few rides, adjust the route and routine based on the actual time, weather and comfort you experience—not on what a map predicted.
