A successful WooCommerce holiday sale is a bounded offer: customers can see exactly what is discounted, when it starts and ends, how to redeem it, and what delivery to expect. Write those rules first, then configure the coupon, announcement, shipping workflow, and shutdown steps so the promotion does not outlive your inventory or your promise.
1. Write a one-page campaign brief
Decide the offer before opening WooCommerce. Record these items in one place:
- Dates and timezone: include the start and end time you will use for both the coupon and public notice.
- Eligible products: list specific products or categories, and note whether existing sale items are excluded.
- Discount structure: choose a percentage, a fixed amount off the cart, or a fixed amount off each eligible product.
- Order boundaries: set any minimum or maximum spend, redemption limit, and whether one customer may use the code once or repeatedly.
- Stacking rule: decide whether the holiday coupon can be combined with other coupons.
- Fulfillment capacity: check stock, packing throughput, carrier collection dates, and the latest date on which you can honestly promise delivery.
- Customer-facing promise: write the exact code, qualifying products, discount, end time, shipping charge or threshold, and delivery estimate.
There is no universal discount percentage or ideal holiday calendar established by WooCommerce. Choose a level your margin and available stock can support.
2. Choose the WooCommerce discount type
WooCommerce core provides three coupon types. Match the type to the promise customers will read:

Coupons reduce products before tax calculation. A normal product coupon does not reduce shipping. Free shipping is a separate coupon setting, so state postage costs and any free-shipping threshold in the promotion copy.
3. Enable coupons and configure the rules
- In WordPress, open WooCommerce > Settings > General and enable coupons if they are not already enabled.
- Open Marketing > Coupons, choose Add coupon, and enter the customer-facing code and description.
- Select the discount type and value that match your brief.
- In Usage restrictions, set minimum or maximum spend, restrict the coupon to products or categories, exclude sale items when required, mark it as individual use only if it must not stack, and add allowed email addresses when the offer is private.
- In Usage limits, set the total number of uses, any item-level limit offered by the coupon configuration, and uses per customer.
- Set the coupon’s availability dates or expiry in the fields provided by your WooCommerce version. Test the start and end behavior in a staging site or with a controlled test order.
Pay particular attention to sale-item exclusions. WooCommerce documents that a per-cart coupon can become ineffective when a sale item is added under the relevant exclusion configuration. Test a cart containing both regular and sale-priced products before launch.

4. Distribute the code and explain redemption
WooCommerce core does not automatically send or apply coupon codes. As WooCommerce puts it: “There is no functionality in WooCommerce core to automatically apply coupon codes for customers, so you need to send them via email, social media, or other marketing methods.”
Publish the code through the channels your customers already use—such as email, social posts, or an on-site campaign page—and tell shoppers where to enter it. Customers apply the code in the cart or at checkout. MailPoet and AutomateWoo are examples WooCommerce names for email and automation workflows; treat them as optional extensions and verify their current features and terms before relying on them.

Every announcement should answer five questions without a click: what is discounted, who qualifies, the exact code, when it ends (including timezone), and what shipping costs or thresholds apply.
5. Schedule the store notice separately
A WooCommerce Store Notice can announce a holiday sale, bundle, or free-shipping offer and can be scheduled for a future date and time. Preview it with your active theme because placement differs, and remember that visitors can dismiss the notice.

The notice is only the message. Removing or disabling it does not end the coupon or another discount; WooCommerce explicitly distinguishes the notice from the promotion itself. Give the coupon its own expiry or disable the underlying sale separately, and confirm the store timezone before scheduling either item.
A practical launch sequence
- Schedule or publish the notice shortly before the coupon becomes usable.
- Place the same terms on the relevant product, category, email, and social destinations.
- Test the code with an eligible product, an excluded sale item, a below-threshold cart, and a cart containing another coupon.
- At the end time, verify that the coupon is rejected, then remove the notice and any campaign banners.
6. Check shipping before promising delivery
Separate the checkout experience from the back-office label workflow. WooCommerce Shipping can purchase and print UPS, USPS, DHL Express, and FedEx labels from the order admin for stores based in the United States, including territories, that use US dollars. It supports 4 × 6-inch labels and 8.5 × 11-inch letter sheets. The service does not provide live carrier rates at checkout; live rates require a compatible carrier-rate extension.

- Confirm that your shipping zones and methods cover every advertised destination.
- Check carrier collection dates, packing capacity, and stock for the products in the offer.
- Publish a delivery estimate rather than implying a guaranteed holiday arrival unless your carrier service actually guarantees it.
- Make the shipping charge, free-shipping condition, and order cut-off time visible beside the discount.
A 4 × 6 thermal label printer can suit an in-house operation that uses that label format. It is unnecessary when you print letter-size sheets, use third-party fulfillment, or do not ship physical goods.
7. Decide whether paid campaigns fit the offer
The 2025 Meta and WooCommerce holiday playbook recommends a Sales objective for Shops ads, an audience of 2–10 million people, campaigns lasting at least 14 days, one unified campaign budget, automated placements, and differentiated creative. Meta describes up to 150 differentiated creative assets as a recommended mix. These are platform setup recommendations—not independent evidence of sales lift or a guarantee of performance—so confirm your Ads Manager interface and eligibility before launch.
A 2025 Google for WooCommerce holiday checklist summary describes syncing product-catalog information to Google and running one campaign across Google surfaces. The available summary does not establish further steps or results; do not treat it as a detailed operating procedure without checking the current checklist.

8. Run a final test and close the campaign
- Place a test order with an eligible product and verify the discount, tax calculation, and shipping charge.
- Try an excluded product, sale item, below-minimum cart, over-maximum cart, and a second coupon.
- Check the per-customer and total-use limits with test accounts or controlled orders.
- Confirm the public notice, product copy, email, and social posts use identical dates, timezone, code, and shipping terms.
- After the end time, confirm the coupon is expired or disabled, remove the notice and campaign creative, and inspect any scheduled emails or automation that could still distribute the code.
- Review unfulfilled orders against stock and carrier cut-offs before accepting any further delivery promise.
