At the store, follow staff directions, keep entrances and accessible routes clear, and leave calmly if the crowd feels unsafe. If the wait is not worth it, check for another time to shop, pickup, or delivery.
Check the local details before you leave
Grand-opening schedules and promotions are store-specific. Read the retailer’s official announcement for the address, opening date, regular shopping hours, ceremony time, advertised offers, and any entry instructions. A ribbon-cutting may start before ordinary shopping begins: Lidl’s announcement for its Tappan, New York, store, dated August 19, 2026, listed a 7:40 a.m. ribbon-cutting and an 8 a.m. regular opening (Lidl US announcement).
Check each offer’s dates, loyalty requirements, and any “while supplies last” terms. Lidl’s announcement, for example, describes rotating weekly promotions and app-based offers; those details apply to that retailer and location, not to grocery stores generally.
Make a short list and prepare for the visit
Write down the items you need, then mark which advertised deals are genuinely worth pursuing. A focused list makes it easier to move through an unfamiliar store without treating every promotion as a reason to join a queue.

- Put essential groceries first and optional purchases second.
- Check the retailer’s app before arrival if it offers store-specific maps, aisle locations, prices, or offers. Walmart says its app provides aisle locations and store maps, price and offer checks, and checkout tools; other chains may offer different features (Walmart’s description of its store app).
- A reusable grocery bag is optional if you prefer carrying purchases that way; it is not a stated requirement for attending an opening.
Navigate the entrance and crowd calmly
Expect a ceremony, queue, changed entrance route, or controlled admission only when the store’s announcement or staff indicates one. Follow posted signs and staff directions rather than assuming the ceremony entrance is also the shopping entrance.
OSHA’s Crowd Management Safety Guidelines for Retailers is guidance for retailers, not a shopper rulebook. It recommends planning staffing and entrances, communicating queue instructions, managing capacity, and keeping exits unobstructed. Its direct instruction to retailers is: “Do not restrict egress, and do not block or lock exit doors” (OSHA fact sheet, November 2012). As a shopper, keep doorways and accessible routes clear, avoid pushing, and move at a comfortable pace. If the environment feels unsafe, leave the queue or store calmly and follow staff or first-responder directions.

Decide whether opening day is worth the wait
Compare the particular deal and its terms with the time and effort of waiting, the likelihood of finding the items you need, and whether another shopping option is practical. No general evidence establishes that opening day, a later visit, or delivery is always the better choice; the answer depends on the specific store and your priorities.
If the crowd is too large, consider returning at another time or checking whether that location offers pickup or delivery. Walmart describes both services, including some deliveries in as little as one hour, but availability and timing depend on location and service conditions; that example does not establish availability at another retailer (Walmart’s service overview).
