To place a stop-loss order for an Indian stock, open your broker’s order ticket, select the correct exchange, side and quantity, choose SL (stop-loss limit) or SL-M (stop-loss market, only where supported), enter the trigger price, add a limit price if you selected SL, and confirm that the order is accepted. A sell stop normally protects a long holding below the current price; a buy stop normally protects a short position above the current price.

A stop-loss is not a guaranteed sale. When the trigger is reached, an SL order becomes a limit order and can remain unfilled if prices gap or move beyond your limit. SL-M generally seeks execution at the available market price, but it can fill at an unexpectedly poor price and is not available for options on NSE.

What a stop-loss order does on NSE

NSE holds a stop-loss order in a separate stop-loss book instead of immediately placing it in the regular order book. The exchange watches the last traded price (LTP) for the security or contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A sell stop triggers when the LTP reaches or falls below your trigger price.
  • A buy stop triggers when the LTP reaches or rises above your trigger price.

After the condition is met, NSE releases the order into the regular lot book, where normal order matching takes place. The trigger therefore starts an order; it does not itself guarantee a trade.

Which side protects each position?

  • Long shares: use a sell stop below the current market price to limit a decline.
  • Short shares: use a buy stop above the current market price to limit a rise.

For example, a stop-loss buy with a trigger of ₹93 and a limit price of ₹95 remains dormant while the market is at ₹90. When the LTP reaches or exceeds ₹93, NSE releases a limit buy at ₹95.

SL versus SL-M: choose the order type first

Feature SL (stop-loss limit) SL-M (stop-loss market)
Prices entered Trigger price and limit price Trigger price only
What happens at the trigger Becomes a limit order at your specified limit Sends a market order when the broker and segment support it
Price control Provides a price boundary; a worse price than the limit should not be accepted No specified price boundary; the fill depends on available bids or offers
Execution risk Can remain open or fail to fill if the market moves through the limit Usually prioritizes execution, but the fill can be materially worse in a fast or thin market
Gap behavior A gap beyond the limit can leave the order unfilled Can execute at the next available prices, including a large gap
Options on NSE Available as the stop-loss structure used for options NSE discontinued SL-M for options

When SL is appropriate

Choose SL when retaining a maximum execution price matters more than certainty of a fill. For a protective sell, the limit is generally set below the trigger; for a protective buy, it is generally set above the trigger. That gap gives the market room to move after activation while preserving a price boundary.

When SL-M is appropriate

Choose SL-M only if the live order ticket shows that the broker and the particular market segment support it. It has no limit-price field. Once triggered, the market order consumes available liquidity, so a thin order book, sudden news, or a price gap can produce a fill far from the trigger.

Options require special care

NSE has discontinued SL-M for options. An options position therefore needs an SL-limit structure: a trigger plus a limit. Placing the limit materially below the trigger for a sell, or above the trigger for a buy, can make the order more likely to trade in a fast move, but it still does not guarantee execution.

Broker labels, validity choices, retention rules and product names can change. Read the current order-ticket description and the broker’s help page immediately before submitting.

Step-by-step: place a stop-loss for an Indian stock

  1. Open the order ticket. Use the broker’s buy/sell screen and select the exact NSE or BSE stock. Check the displayed market price, exchange, product type and available quantity.
  2. Select the transaction side. Choose Sell when protecting shares you own. Choose Buy when covering a short position. Selecting the wrong side can increase rather than reduce exposure.
  3. Enter the quantity. Use the number of shares you actually intend to protect. If some shares are already covered by another exit order, adjust the quantity to avoid an unintended position.
  4. Choose the order variety. Select SL when you want a trigger and a limit price. Select SL-M only when the ticket explicitly offers it for that exchange, product and segment. Do not assume SL-M is available for options.
  5. Enter the trigger price. A protective sell trigger is ordinarily below the current market price. A protective buy trigger is ordinarily above it. The trigger is the condition that wakes the dormant order; it is not necessarily the eventual execution price.
  6. Enter the limit price if using SL. For a sell stop, the limit is generally below the trigger. For a buy stop, it is generally above the trigger. Leave a sensible distance for ordinary volatility, while respecting the broker’s tick-size, price-band and exchange validation rules.
  7. Set validity and review requirements. Select the available validity option, review the estimated margin or funds, and check that the exchange, side, quantity, trigger and limit are all correct. Do not rely on a remembered label from an older version of the platform.
  8. Submit and verify status. Confirm that the order was accepted and appears in the order book as pending, triggered or filled, rather than rejected. Record the order number so you can modify or cancel it under the broker’s rules.
  9. Monitor after activation. If the order triggers, check whether it filled completely, partially or not at all. A triggered SL order can remain open as a limit order and may require cancellation or a replacement order.

How to enter trigger and limit prices

Protecting a long holding with a sell stop

Suppose you own shares trading around ₹100 and decide that a decline through ₹95 is the point at which you want to exit. A possible SL setup is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Side: Sell
  • Trigger: ₹95
  • Limit: a price below ₹95, such as ₹94, if that distance is reasonable for the stock’s liquidity and volatility

While the LTP remains above ₹95, the order stays in the stop-loss book. At ₹95 or lower, it is released as a limit sell at ₹94. If bids are available at ₹94 or better, it can fill. If the market gaps from above ₹95 to below ₹94, there may be no qualifying bid and the order can remain open.

Protecting a short position with a buy stop

Suppose you are short and want to cover if the price rises through ₹105. A possible SL setup is:

  • Side: Buy
  • Trigger: ₹105
  • Limit: a price above ₹105, such as ₹106, if that distance is reasonable

At ₹105 or higher, the order becomes a limit buy at ₹106. It can fill at ₹105, ₹105.50 or another price up to the stated limit, depending on available offers. A jump above ₹106 can leave it unfilled.

Trigger is not a guaranteed execution price

The trigger is an activation condition based on the LTP. It does not promise that you will trade at that number. After activation, the regular order book, available liquidity, price limits and your order type determine whether and where the trade occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a trigger from risk, not from a universal percentage

No official source establishes one stop-loss percentage or rupee distance that fits every Indian stock. Trigger selection is an investor-specific risk decision. Consider the following factors together:

Start with the maximum rupee loss

Decide the largest loss you can accept on the position, then divide it by the number of shares. For example, a ₹4,000 maximum loss on 200 shares implies ₹20 of planned risk per share before fees, taxes, slippage and any overnight gap. For a long position, subtract that risk allowance from the entry price to obtain a starting reference; for a short position, add it. This is a planning method, not an exchange formula, and it must be adjusted when the result conflicts with the stock’s normal movement or nearby support and resistance.

Account for volatility and market structure

  • Place a trigger outside ordinary intraday noise rather than at a price the stock routinely touches and reverses from.
  • Review nearby support for a long position and resistance for a short position, while recognising that these levels can fail during news or broad-market moves.
  • Use a wider allowance for a volatile or thinly traded stock only if the resulting rupee risk remains acceptable; otherwise reduce the position size.
  • Check the spread and visible depth. A wide spread means the next available bid or offer may be far from the last traded price.

Do not treat a stop as a guarantee

SEBI’s investor education material explains that when a security or derivatives contract reaches or trades through the predetermined price, the stop-loss converts to a market or limit order and is executed at the limit or better. It also warns: “There is no assurance therefore that the limit order will be executable since a security / derivatives contract might penetrate the pre-determined price, in which case, the risk of such order not getting executed arises, just as with a regular limit order.”

Limit-price protection and rejected orders

NSE applies limit-price-protection (LPP) checks after an SL-limit order is triggered. A buy price above the applicable high LPP limit, or a sell price below the applicable low LPP limit, can be rejected. The exact bands and validations are exchange-controlled and can vary with the instrument.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

NSE advises avoiding extreme prices and keeping the difference between the trigger and limit reasonable to reduce rejection instances. A very wide gap intended to imitate a market order can therefore create a validation problem, while a very narrow gap increases the chance of non-execution. Use the distances permitted by the live ticket and review any rejection message before submitting a replacement.

What can happen after the trigger

Full fill

The released order matches available liquidity and the protected position is closed for the filled quantity. Confirm the trade in the executed-order or position view rather than assuming that activation means completion.

Partial fill

Only part of the quantity may trade, especially in a thin market. The remaining quantity can stay open as a limit order, subject to the broker’s rules. Check the outstanding quantity and decide whether to leave, modify or cancel it.

Gap through the limit

A stock can open or jump below a sell limit, or above a buy limit, without trading at your acceptable price. An SL order may then remain pending. If risk has changed, handle the unfilled remainder using the broker’s permitted order controls; do not assume the exchange will retry it at a better price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trading halt or illiquidity

If trading is halted or there are no matching bids or offers, activation cannot create liquidity. The order can remain unfilled until matching resumes, and the eventual price may differ substantially from the trigger.

Trading sessions and validity

Stop-loss orders are not allowed in the NSE pre-open session. A stop order submitted for a regular session should therefore be checked for acceptance after the market moves into the permitted session. The broker may display a pending state, reject the order, or offer a different validity choice depending on the product and exchange.

Before relying on an order overnight or across a corporate action, verify how the broker handles retention, expiry, quantity adjustments and cancellations. These operational details are platform-specific and can change without changing the basic NSE trigger mechanism.

Troubleshoot common problems

The order was rejected immediately

  • Check that the exchange, product and order variety are compatible.
  • Confirm that the stop-loss feature is allowed for the selected segment; SL-M is not available for NSE options.
  • Review tick-size, price-band and LPP-related messages.
  • Ensure the trigger and limit are on the correct side of the current price for the selected buy or sell direction.
  • Check available funds, margin and quantity.

The order triggered but did not sell or buy

  • Confirm whether it became a limit order rather than a market order.
  • Compare the current market with your limit; a gap beyond the limit can explain the non-fill.
  • Check for a partial fill, wide spread, shallow depth or trading halt.
  • Decide whether to cancel and submit a new order only after assessing the remaining risk and the broker’s rules.

The stop triggered at a surprising price

The LTP may have moved rapidly through the trigger, or the order may have been released into a thin book. SL-M can fill at the next available prices; SL can fill anywhere at the limit or better. A trigger is an activation threshold, not a guaranteed quote.

Practical checklist before you submit

  • Correct stock, exchange and product selected.
  • Correct side: sell for a long holding, buy for a short position.
  • Quantity matches the unprotected position.
  • Trigger is on the intended side of the current price.
  • SL limit is entered and leaves a sensible, permitted distance from the trigger.
  • SL-M is used only where the broker and segment support it.
  • Margin, funds and validity are acceptable.
  • Order status is confirmed after submission.
  • Position and outstanding quantity are checked after any trigger or partial fill.

Bottom line

Use a sell stop below the market to protect a long Indian-stock position and a buy stop above the market to protect a short position. SL gives price control through a limit but can fail to fill; SL-M seeks execution but can produce a poor price and is unavailable for NSE options. Enter the trigger and limit deliberately, avoid extreme distances that can fail LPP checks, remember that NSE does not permit stop-loss orders in the pre-open session, and verify the order’s actual status after activation.
