Start with the router in an open, central location, elevated above the floor. Keep it away from large obstacles, then test signal and actual performance in the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. If a weak area remains, consider a compatible mesh point placed between the router and that area—not inside the dead zone.
There is no universally best shelf, height, orientation, or guaranteed speed. Your modem connection, home layout and construction, router antennas, client devices, interference, and local radio rules all affect the result.

Where should you put a Wi-Fi 7 router?
Place it as near the center of the home as the modem connection allows, in an open spot and above the floor. An open shelf or TV stand is a reasonable starting point. Avoid a corner, outside wall, closet, cabinet, floor-level position, or spot behind major obstructions. Ofcom explains that a central, raised position helps avoid sending signal outside the home or into the ground: Ofcom’s Wi-Fi placement guidance.
Reducing the number of walls and other obstacles between the router and the devices you care about can help. Metal objects can also interfere with the signal. Microsoft recommends moving an access point toward the middle of the home or room and higher where possible: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Keep the router in the open
Do not hide it inside furniture or behind large objects. TP-Link identifies microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, and Bluetooth devices as possible competitors for 2.4 GHz airtime. Their effect depends on distance and use, so treat them as things to investigate rather than guaranteed causes of a problem: TP-Link’s router placement advice.
Try antenna orientations rather than assuming one is best
If your router has adjustable aerials, experiment with their orientation. Ofcom’s general suggestion for multiple aerials is to point them in different directions, such as vertically and horizontally. Antenna design and manufacturer instructions vary by model, so there is no universal orientation or ideal height.

How to check whether the placement is working
Judge placement in the rooms where people actually work, call, play, or stream—not only beside the router. Check both Wi-Fi signal and real performance. A signal indicator alone does not tell you whether the connection is fast or reliable enough for your use.
- Start with the router near the center. Put it in an open, raised location, subject to the modem and cable connection.
- Test your important rooms. Walk through the home with a Wi-Fi analyzer or use measurement tools provided by your router, if available. Check the devices and locations that matter most.
- Identify the type of problem. Poor performance may come from weak signal, channel congestion, interference, device limits, or a combination. Microsoft advises checking performance in different locations before choosing a channel.
- Adjust one factor at a time. If practical, try a more central or open spot, change antenna orientation, or investigate channel use and device orientation. Changing channels will not make a weak signal reliable, and forcing a wider channel is not automatically an improvement.
- Retest after each change. Compare results in the same rooms and on the same intended devices so you can tell whether the change helped.
Placement is an inexact science: home size, construction, layout, and where Wi-Fi is used all matter. Google recommends retesting mesh connections after moving points: Google Nest’s guidance on Wi-Fi point placement.

What Wi-Fi 7 changes—and what it does not
Wi-Fi 7 introduces features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and support for channel widths up to 320 MHz in 6 GHz. Cisco describes 320 MHz as twice the capacity of a 160 MHz channel; that is a channel-capacity comparison, not a promise that a home internet connection or real-world speed will double. These features depend on compatible client devices and actual link conditions: Cisco’s Wi-Fi 7 overview.
Wi-Fi 7 does not remove the physical limits of radio signals. Higher-frequency 6 GHz generally reaches less far and penetrates walls less effectively than lower frequencies. Microsoft describes the broad trade-offs: 2.4 GHz tends to reach farther and work better through walls but is slower and more congested; 5 GHz tends to offer faster throughput over a shorter range; and 6 GHz can provide very fast throughput near the router but has shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration. These are tendencies, not guarantees for a particular home.

If a 6 GHz device performs poorly at a distance or behind an obstruction, check its signal and consider 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz instead. ASUS notes that speed and latency depend on signal strength, interference, channel width, and client specifications, and that channel support varies by region: ASUS guidance on Wi-Fi speed and channel support. Do not assume every client supports 6 GHz, 320 MHz channels, or MLO.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you add a mesh point or extender?
Consider additional equipment only after you have tested and improved the router’s position. If one or more areas still have weak coverage, a mesh point can extend coverage—but it needs to be close enough to the router to maintain a strong connection. Put it partway toward the weak area, in an open location, then check its connection quality and adjust if needed. Google offers mesh-point placement guidance.

For a broader whole-home coverage gap, a compatible mesh system may be appropriate; an extender may suit a single weak spot. Neither option has a universal price or performance advantage, and compatibility matters. Check that the added equipment works with your existing router and meets the requirements of the devices and system. TP-Link discusses the distinction between mesh coverage and an extender for a targeted weak area: TP-Link’s mesh Wi-Fi overview.
Why might a well-placed router still feel slow?
Router location is only one part of performance. A strong signal with unreliable or disappointing results can point to channel congestion, interference, a client-device limitation, or an issue beyond the Wi-Fi link. Check performance in more than one location and device before deciding that a new router or mesh node is the answer. In multi-access-point or high-density deployments, coverage and capacity must be planned together; HPE Aruba warns that overly dense access-point placement can create co-channel interference. That enterprise guidance is not a universal home-network rule: HPE Aruba’s campus network design principles.
