The strongest pitch is not a full story dump or an unsolicited attachment. It is a short, decision-ready case for why this company should develop your project: a clear hook, the right format, a believable story engine or complete film arc, a defined audience, and a specific next step. First confirm the company’s submission route; then prepare the script and concise verbal pitch; share written material only when requested and under clear terms.
Start with the company’s submission route
Before rewriting a logline or designing a deck, find out how the company actually receives projects. Production companies differ in territory, genre mandate, development priorities and whether they accept material from individuals. A polished pitch sent through the wrong channel is still the wrong submission.
Check who is eligible to submit
Look for a current submissions page, development policy or contact instruction that answers four questions:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Does the company accept unsolicited ideas, scripts or treatments?
- Must the writer be represented by an agent, manager or solicitor?
- Must the project come through an eligible producing or production company?
- Does the policy apply to your country and the format you are proposing?
BBC PiCoS, for example, says it accepts programme or film proposals from production companies and is not a route for members of the public or individuals who are not working for a production company. That kind of restriction is decisive: you would need an eligible production partner rather than sending a personal submission.

Match the project to the buyer
Read the company’s recent credits and stated development interests for evidence of fit, not as an excuse to imitate a previous show. Note the genres, audience groups, episode lengths, territories and platforms it regularly handles. Your pitch should answer, in one sentence, why this company is a sensible home for this particular project.
Prepare the script before requesting a meeting
Have a polished pilot for a series or a finished feature screenplay before asking for a pitch meeting. A concept without a readable script may be useful at an early conversation, but it gives an executive no way to assess your execution. If the company asks for a different sample, follow that instruction exactly.
Write a one-sentence hook that can survive a conversation
Your logline is the project’s identity card. WGA Project Page guidance treats the logline as key project information. It should identify the protagonist, the goal, the main obstacle, the stakes and the distinctive world without explaining every twist.

A practical logline structure
Use this as a drafting pattern, then remove anything that sounds generic:
When [inciting event], a [specific protagonist] must [concrete goal] before [stakes or deadline], while facing [central obstacle] in a [distinctive world or situation].
The wording is not a formula you must recite. Its purpose is to force a decision-ready premise. “A detective investigates a murder” identifies a genre but not your show. A useful version tells the listener what makes this detective, crime and world different, and what will keep the story moving after the first case.
Test the hook aloud
- Can you say it in one breath without subordinate plot points?
- Is the protagonist doing something, rather than merely experiencing a situation?
- Is the obstacle active and specific?
- Can a listener picture the tone and world?
- Does the premise imply a series engine or a complete film journey?
Write several versions: a plain-language sentence for a conversation, a tighter version for a cover email and a slightly fuller version for a deck. Keep the underlying promise identical.

Build the verbal pitch around decisions an executive must make
A meeting is not a performance of the entire screenplay. It gives the company enough information to decide whether to read, develop or circulate the project. State the format, genre, premise, principal characters, trajectory, audience, tone and company fit in an order that keeps the central question visible.

A five-to-ten-minute structure
- Hook and format: Open with the logline, then identify the form: feature, half-hour series, hour-long series, limited series or returning series.
- World and protagonist: Explain where the story lives, who drives it and what the protagonist wants.
- Story movement: Describe the pilot or first act, the major turning point and the direction of the season or feature. Do not hide the ending from a buyer who is evaluating structure.
- Characters and conflict: Introduce only the characters who generate the central pressure. Explain the relationships that can produce future choices and reversals.
- Audience, tone and fit: Say who will watch, how the project should feel and why the company’s mandate or experience is relevant.
- Next step: Ask which material the executive wants next and confirm how to deliver it.
Keep the language conversational. Pause after the hook and after the main premise so the executive can ask questions. A five-to-ten-minute expanded pitch is a useful rehearsal target; it is not a command to fill every minute.
Use comparisons carefully
Comparable titles can clarify tone, audience or scale, but they are not a substitute for your premise. Choose one or two genuinely relevant references and explain the combination you are offering. Avoid claiming that a project is “the next” successful title or implying that a similar title guarantees demand.
For a TV series, prove the engine can generate episodes
A series buyer needs more than a compelling pilot. The pitch must show why the characters, setting and conflicts can produce sustained stories at the proposed length and season order.
Define the format and structure
State whether the project is a half-hour or hour, scripted or unscripted if relevant, limited or returning, and how many episodes you are proposing if that number is known. Explain whether each episode is self-contained, serialised or a hybrid. If the runtime or order is still flexible, describe the creative reason rather than presenting an arbitrary number.
Explain the episode engine
The engine is the repeatable source of story. It might be a workplace with a new problem each week, a family whose secrets create escalating consequences, a procedural investigation, a competition with changing alliances or a world that continually forces the protagonists to make costly choices. Describe:
- What reliably creates the next episode’s central problem.
- Which character goals collide and why the conflict cannot be solved once.
- What changes after each episode, so the series is not resetting to zero.
- How the premise can escalate without violating the show’s rules.
Map the pilot and season arc
Give the pilot’s inciting event, major turns and ending. Then show the season’s destination and the pressure that moves the characters toward it. A buyer should understand what is resolved in the pilot, what remains open, and why viewers need the next episode.
Demonstrate future episodes
Offer a few concise episode examples, each with a distinct problem and a consequence for the larger arc. The examples should demonstrate range: different character combinations, escalating stakes and the show’s tonal promise. Do not list ten undeveloped ideas; select the examples that prove repeatability.
Distinguish limited and returning series
For a limited series, state the planned endpoint and how the central question will be answered. The appeal is a deliberate, finite journey, so avoid implying an indefinite continuation unless you have a clear reason. For a returning series, show the engine and the escalation potential beyond the first season: new pressures, evolving relationships and a world that can keep generating consequential stories.

For a film, prove a complete and producible proposition
A feature pitch is judged as one finished arc rather than an open-ended engine. The listener should know what happens, why it matters and what kind of production the idea invites.
Tell the whole dramatic movement
Cover the beginning, the turning point, the major complications, the climax and the ending. You are not spoiling the pitch by explaining the resolution; you are demonstrating control of the story. Identify the protagonist’s external goal and the internal change or choice that gives the ending meaning.
Clarify tone and audience
Describe the intended viewing experience in concrete terms: tense, intimate, comic, expansive, satirical or another precise combination. Then identify the audience most likely to respond and why the concept reaches them. A broad claim such as “everyone will love it” supplies no useful decision information.
Explain the production hook
State what makes the film distinctive and what makes it practical to produce. The hook could be a contained location, a period setting that is essential to the conflict, a focused cast, a high-concept visual rule or another feature that informs scale. Do not invent a budget, attachment or market result. Describe the production implications honestly and identify any element that requires rights or specialist access.
Use comparable titles to signal scale
Comparables can communicate genre, tone and likely audience. Pair them with your project’s difference: the setting, relationship, formal device or moral question that gives the film its own identity.
Choose written materials deliberately
Do not send a large package by default. The company’s request controls what you deliver, in what format and by when.
What a requested deck or treatment can contain
- Title and tagline.
- Logline and concise synopsis.
- Format, genre, runtime or episode structure.
- World, tone and themes.
- Main-character descriptions and relationship dynamics.
- Pilot or feature trajectory, including the planned ending where appropriate.
- For series, the episode engine, season arc and selected future-episode examples.
- Audience and a specific “why now” rationale when it is genuinely relevant.
- Creator statement, relevant work and team biographies.
- Contact details and the requested delivery information.
Tailor the leave-behind to the request. A feature screenplay is not a substitute for a requested treatment; a deck is not permission to send the entire development history. Remove material that the executive did not ask for.

The WGA Producers’ Guide says, “Don’t ask writers to leave behind written material, including pitch notes, outlines, or a pitch deck.” It also explains that pre-contract development should be handled verbally and that a requested written pitch document may create a payment obligation under the MBA. This guidance matters when a company asks you to create substantial written development work before an agreement.

If an executive requests a document, ask what it is for, who will receive it, whether it is confidential, whether the request is exclusive and whether compensation or a contract applies. Confirm the scope in writing before doing additional work.
Protect authorship, rights and your paper trail
Keep dated copies of every draft, logline, deck, email and submission. Preserve the version you delivered and record the date, recipient, requested materials and any response. Use a consistent project title so correspondence can be matched later.
Know what you own
The WGA Screenwriters Handbook states: “Any work a writer does to prepare a pitch or take a meeting is the sole property of the writer.” That statement does not replace a contract or settle every rights question in every jurisdiction, but it is a clear reminder to document your authorship and read any agreement before assigning rights.

Clarify underlying rights and attachments
Tell the company whether the project is wholly original or based on a book, article, life story, existing format, artwork, optioned property or other underlying material. Identify who controls those rights and what permission has been secured. Do not describe an actor, director or producer as attached unless there is a real, documented commitment and you can state its status accurately.
Set boundaries on exclusivity and confidentiality
Ask whether the company wants an exclusive submission, for how long and what happens when the period ends. Ask who may circulate the material internally or externally. Confidentiality is not automatic simply because you sent an email; understand the company’s stated policy and obtain written terms where the stakes justify it.
Ask transparency questions before agreeing to development work
Use the WGA Project Page fields as a practical checklist when evaluating an opportunity. These questions help you understand the context in which your project is being considered:
- How many writers are competing or being considered for the project?
- How long has the project been in development?
- Is a director or actor attached, and what does “attached” mean contractually?
- Are the underlying intellectual-property rights secured?
- Who is the decision-maker, and what is the next approval stage?
- What materials are requested, who will read them and when?
- Is the assignment paid, and which rights or services would an agreement cover?
Vague answers do not automatically mean the opportunity is improper, but they are a reason to slow down and obtain clarity before supplying new work.
TV series and film require different proof
| Aspect | TV series | Film |
|---|---|---|
| Story horizon | Repeatable episode and season engine | One complete feature arc |
| Format and runtime | Episode length, season order, and returning or limited structure | Feature runtime and contained structure |
| Core materials | Pilot plus series overview and episode or season plan | Feature screenplay plus synopsis or treatment |
| Buyer fit | Commissioning or development mandate and audience strategy | Genre, budget scale, audience and production feasibility |
| Rights and attachments | Underlying IP, producer, director, cast and exclusivity status | Underlying IP, producer, director, cast and exclusivity status |
Use the distinction to decide what to emphasise. A brilliant pilot with no repeatable engine is incomplete as a series pitch; a film concept that depends on endless continuation has not demonstrated a feature ending.

Submit in a controlled sequence
- Identify the route and territory. Save the company’s current submission instructions and confirm that your project and location qualify.
- Verify unsolicited-material rules. Establish whether you need representation or a producing partner and whether the company accepts your format.
- Finish the right script. Have a polished pilot or feature screenplay ready before requesting a meeting.
- Rehearse two versions. Prepare the one-sentence logline and a conversational five-to-ten-minute expansion.
- Request the meeting or submit the logline. Follow the stated channel; do not attach a deck or script unless requested.
- Confirm the meeting brief. Ask how much time is allocated, who will attend and which materials may be brought.
- Pitch the decision information. Cover format, premise, characters, trajectory, audience, tone and fit, then stop for questions.
- Ask for a concrete next step. Find out whether the company wants the pilot, screenplay, treatment, deck, another meeting or permission to circulate internally.
- Confirm terms in writing. Record the requested format, deadline, exclusivity, confidentiality, payment and response expectations.
- Deliver only what was requested. Use the agreed file type and naming convention, retain a dated copy and log the delivery.
Handle common problems without weakening the project
“The company wants more pages before deciding”
Ask what decision the additional pages will support and whether the request is paid or covered by an agreement. If the request is open-ended, propose a defined deliverable, deadline and ownership terms rather than producing an unlimited package.
“The executive asks for the ending to be withheld”
Explain the ending in the meeting or requested document unless the executive specifically asks for a spoiler-free overview. A buyer assessing a complete arc needs to see that the resolution earns the premise.
“The pitch is exciting but the format is unclear”
State the format at the start and repeat the structural implication once: a limited series has a planned endpoint, a returning series has an engine for further seasons and a feature resolves in one film. If the form is genuinely flexible, explain what would change creatively and what would remain fixed.
“The project is based on someone else’s material”
Pause the submission until you know who controls the underlying rights and what permission you have. A compelling adaptation pitch cannot compensate for an unavailable property.
“Someone asks for upfront fees or paid access”
Treat requests for upfront fees, paid access or mandatory services as a reason to pause and verify independently. The official guidance consulted for this article does not endorse such practices. Ask for a written explanation of what is being purchased, who is providing it and whether any legitimate contract or service is involved; never confuse a paid service with a production-company commitment.
Use a craft resource for preparation, not access
Michael Hauge’s Writing Screenplays That Sell (Bloomsbury, 2011 edition; paperback, 384 pages; ISBN 9781408151464) covers story concept, character, structure, scenes, submission, agent selection and marketing. It can help you strengthen a script or prepare a meeting, but it does not provide access to a production company or guarantee a sale.
Your final pre-meeting checklist
- The company’s route, territory and unsolicited-submission policy are confirmed.
- Your pilot or feature screenplay is complete and polished.
- The logline states protagonist, goal, obstacle, stakes and distinctive world.
- The TV pitch explains the episode engine, pilot, season arc and future-episode range, or the limited-series endpoint.
- The film pitch covers the complete arc, tone, audience, comparables and production proposition.
- You know which rights are secured and which people are genuinely attached.
- You will bring or send only requested materials.
- You have dated drafts and a written record of requests.
- You know the exact next-step question you will ask.
A production company is deciding whether your project is clear, viable for its mandate and worth the next development step. Give it that evidence in the shortest form that answers those questions, then protect your work while the conversation develops.
