In current Puppeteer, call page.record() to record a tab, then either give it a file path or pipe its recording stream into a Node.js writable. Use the path option for a straightforward MP4 file; use pipe() when you need to control the destination stream. Stop the recorder and wait for the file stream to finish before using the output.
Use Puppeteer’s current recording API
The current Puppeteer Page API documents page.record(), which uses Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.startScreenRecording and produces an MP4 stream. The documented example writes directly to a path; the returned ScreenRecording can also be piped to a destination stream. See the Page.record API reference and ScreenRecording reference.
The references available for this guidance display Puppeteer 25.12.0 for Page.record() and 25.11.0 for ScreenRecording. Check the documentation and typings for your installed Puppeteer version because signatures may differ.
Simplest option: record directly to a path
If you only need a recording saved to disk, use the documented path option rather than managing a writable stream:

Pipe the recording stream to a file
Use pipe() when your application needs to direct the recording to a caller-controlled writable. The following composes the documented ScreenRecording.pipe() and stop() methods with Node.js file-stream completion handling. The Puppeteer references confirm the methods, but do not present this exact createWriteStream recipe as an official example.

}finished(output) waits for the writable to complete and rejects if it errors. Awaiting recorder.stop() ends the recording before waiting for output completion. The outer finally still closes the browser if navigation, recording, or browser actions fail.
Use a filename ending in .mp4 to make the output format clear to downstream tools. The API documents MP4 output; the extension does not perform a format conversion.

Choose between a path and a writable stream

Both approaches use the built-in Puppeteer recording API. The supplied package information for puppeteer-screen-recorder describes path saving and streaming through startStream() into a PassThrough, followed by stop(). Its current release, maintenance status, and compatibility were not established, so verify those details against your installed Puppeteer and Chrome before adopting it. See the package page.
Handle common recording problems
- The installed package has no
page.record()or its signature differs: check your installed package’s typings and version-specific API documentation. The API references cited here show different versions forPage.record()andScreenRecording. - The output file is missing, empty, or incomplete: ensure the recording is stopped and, when piping, that
finished(output)has resolved before inspecting or using the file. - The file stream fails: let the completion promise reject and handle that error in your application. Do not treat the file as complete just because
pipe()returned. - You expected a recording of the whole desktop: Puppeteer records a page, not the desktop. Use a tool intended for desktop capture if that is the actual requirement.
- You followed an example using
page.screencast(): Puppeteer’s main-branch documentation marks that method obsolete and directs users topage.record(). The older API is described as WebM using VP9 at 30 FPS by default and requiring FFmpeg; those details belong to the obsolete method, not automatically topage.record(). Does page.record() save MP4 or WebM?
The current Puppeteer Page.record() API documents MP4 output. WebM is described for the obsolete page.screencast() method, not as the output of page.record().

The recording API is attached to a Puppeteer Page. The cited Page reference describes a page as one tab or extension background page; it does not describe desktop capture.
