Firefox 143 and later lets you install a website as a web app on Windows, then open it from the taskbar in a simplified window. Open the site in Firefox and use the web-apps button in the address bar. Firefox also adds a Start menu shortcut. The feature is not available in Firefox installations from the Microsoft Store.
What Firefox’s website shortcuts do
A web app opens a website in its own simplified window instead of a regular tabbed Firefox window. You can launch it from the Windows taskbar, and Firefox creates a shortcut in the Start menu. Mozilla says installed Firefox add-ons remain available in these web apps.
The feature arrived in Firefox 143, first offered to Release channel users on September 16, 2025. Mozilla’s Firefox 143 release notes describe websites that can be pinned and run as simplified windows directly from the taskbar.
Install and pin a website
- Open the website you want to use in Firefox for Windows.
- Look for the web-apps button in the address bar.
- Click the button to install the website as a web app. Firefox adds it to the Windows taskbar and creates a Start menu shortcut.
- If Windows asks whether to pin the newly installed app, choose Yes. If you dismiss the prompt or choose not to pin it, you can pin the app later as you would another Windows app.
Mozilla’s support article explains that a web app opens in its own window and can be pinned or unpinned without affecting its functionality.

If the web-apps button is missing
Check how Firefox was installed. Mozilla says the feature is available in Firefox for Windows from version 143, but is not currently available for Firefox installations from the Microsoft Store. If you use a Microsoft Store installation, that is the documented reason the button may not appear.
For another supported Windows Firefox installation, confirm that it is version 143 or later and that the website is open in Firefox. Mozilla’s documentation describes adding websites visited in Firefox; it does not list a narrower set of eligible websites.

How a Firefox web app differs from a normal tab
A taskbar web app is a separate, simplified window for a site, with a taskbar launch point and a Start menu shortcut. It is not just a regular Firefox tab opened from the taskbar. Mozilla also says installed add-ons remain accessible, so the simplified window does not mean giving up Firefox add-ons.
The cited Mozilla documentation does not establish comparative speed, memory use, or feature parity with web apps in Chrome or Edge. Those benefits should not be assumed from the taskbar shortcut alone.
