Photograph the object with enough surrounding sky to show where it appeared, then record when and where you saw it, the direction you faced, how long it remained visible, its apparent movement and brightness, and the camera or phone used. Keep the original files and describe any edits. A photograph can document an observation, but by itself it cannot establish what the object was, how far away it was, how large or fast it was, or where it came from.

What to capture while the object is visible

If it is safe and practical, take both a broad scene image and a closer view. Include the horizon or recognizable landmarks where possible so someone else can understand the camera’s orientation. A short sequence can add context that a single frame cannot. NASA’s general photography guidance recommends enough scene context for orientation and explains that lens choice changes perspective: NASA photography guidance.

  • Note the date and time, including the time zone if known.
  • Record your location and the direction you faced, such as southwest, rather than relying on a picture alone.
  • Describe how long the object was visible, how it appeared to move, and whether its brightness changed.
  • Identify the device used and, if known, its lens or camera settings.

These are observations, not calibrated measurements. Unless you have reliable reference points and a measurement method, describe movement as “appeared to move slowly across the sky,” not as a measured speed. NASA’s UAP study materials emphasize that calibration and context affect what can be concluded from an observation: NASA UAP study materials.

Keep a faithful original and label every copy

Retain the camera’s original, uncompressed photo or video file and its available metadata. AARO says cellphone GPS and timestamp metadata may be useful, and that compression can add artifacts; its evidence guidance also calls for uncompressed data and camera specifications where available: AARO evidence guidance. Device behavior varies, so record time and location separately as well when you can.

For sharing or analysis, make a separate copy rather than altering the original. Clearly say if a shared version was cropped, edited, recompressed, or otherwise processed, and keep a note of what changed. If you filmed a display showing the image instead of recording the sky directly, label it as a secondary recording. AARO notes that such recordings can lose resolution and visual quality and may include blur or flicker artifacts: AARO imagery descriptions.

Why framing and camera settings can mislead

A tight zoom can remove landmarks and make it hard to judge where an object was in relation to the horizon or other features. Wide-angle and telephoto lenses render perspective differently, while focus, exposure, lighting, and framing all affect the resulting image. Digital zoom or a close crop should not be treated as evidence of an object’s real size or distance. NASA’s photography manual is general guidance rather than a sky-reporting standard, but its explanations of perspective and scene representation apply here: NASA photography guidance.

NASA cautions in NPR 8621.1 Appendix B3: “Photographs can easily misrepresent a scene and lead to false conclusions or findings about a mishap.” The same practical lesson applies to an unexplained light: an image shows a camera’s rendering of a scene, not a complete account of the scene.

Check ordinary explanations before calling it unidentified

A bright or moving point in the sky can be a planet, star, satellite, aircraft, balloon, rocket, meteor, cloud, or a camera artifact such as lens flare. NASA’s skywatching guidance names Venus, Sirius, Jupiter, and Mercury among bright objects people may mistake for something unusual; it also lists rocket launches, military jets, weather balloons, sounding rockets, satellites, meteors, fireballs, clouds, remote-control aircraft, and lens flare or aberration. Compare the date, time, direction, and duration with ordinary sky and flight explanations before deciding you cannot identify it: NASA skywatching guidance.

MIAO LAB 28X HD Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android, High Power Telephoto Camera Lens with Universal Clip Compatibility Most Smartphone - 28X
  • Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
  • Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
  • Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
  • Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
  • Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.

Matching an explanation may require more than the photograph. The time and location you recorded can help compare the observation with aircraft, balloon, and satellite data, which is one reason AARO recommends time-stamping and geolocating the observer and observed object when possible.

Describe what the image establishes—and what it does not

Separate three things in a caption or report: what you personally observed, what the camera recorded, and any later interpretation. Use careful language such as “unidentified in this image,” “I could not identify it at the time,” or “the available photo does not establish what it is.” Avoid presenting an interpretation as though the picture proves it.

NASA notes that many UAP sightings have very limited data, making scientific conclusions difficult, and states that there is no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial: NASA UAP FAQs.
