TikTok’s new For You feed controls let you adjust how often broad topics appear and filter words and related terms. Use Manage Topics to tune topic frequency, Smart Keyword Filters to limit content connected to specific words, and the feed’s other controls to influence recommendations. Neither tool guarantees that every unwanted video will disappear.
What TikTok’s new For You feed controls do
Announced on June 4, 2025, the tools are Manage Topics, Smart Keyword Filters, and an educational guide to recommendations. TikTok said the rollout was for both teen and adult accounts, but availability and exact labels can vary by location, account type, and app version.

How to personalize your TikTok For You page
TikTok’s announcement and Safety Center guide describe these controls, but do not establish one universal menu path. Look for the named options in your app; their location and availability may differ.
- Adjust broad interests: Open Manage Topics and tune the frequency of topics you want to see more or less often.
- Filter particular words: Open Smart Keyword Filters and add keywords related to content you would rather not see. Review the additional matched terms shown by the feature.
- Give feedback on individual posts: Use Not interested on content you want TikTok to recommend less.
- Reinforce interests you do want: Watch content, like or favorite posts, follow creators, and search for topics you want to explore.
- Use broader viewing safeguards if appropriate: TikTok also lists Restricted Mode, muting accounts, and refreshing the For You feed among the ways to shape your experience.
How TikTok decides what to recommend
TikTok says its system learns from interactions and viewing behavior, including whether you like, share, favorite, or comment on a post, how long you watch, and whether you finish it. It also considers whom you follow, topics you search, and what people with similar interests enjoy. Its Safety Center guide adds factors such as freshness, local creators, post length, posting time, and sounds, and says the system aims to avoid repetitive recommendations.

That is why both active feedback and viewing habits matter: skipping a video, watching one to the end, searching for a topic, and following a creator provide different signals. TikTok does not describe Manage Topics as a way to switch off a subject altogether.
What protections apply to teens and adults?
TikTok said the new personalization tools would launch for teen and adult accounts. The company also points to For You eligibility standards, Content Levels intended to reduce mature or complex themes reaching young people, Restricted Mode, feed refresh, and Not interested. It says it takes steps to interrupt repeated exposure to content that could become problematic when seen too often. These measures complement personalization controls; they are not guarantees that all such content will be excluded.

What TikTok’s usage figures mean
In its 2025 announcement, TikTok reported that more than 200 million words had been filtered globally through its keyword-filter tools and that its educational videos about how the For You feed works had received more than 180 million views. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited results or evidence of how effectively the tools prevent particular videos from appearing.

TikTok describes the For You feed as “the heart of the TikTok experience.” Its Safety Center says the feed is designed to help people discover topics and creators beyond those they already know. The educational guide explains recommendation factors and ways to tune the feed; TikTok also announced plans for explanatory videos about why a post was recommended and how people can shape their experience.
