If Google Wallet is unavailable, you can still pay by phone only if another wallet supports your device, country and card—and the shop accepts contactless payments. Check Apple Pay on an eligible Apple device or Samsung Wallet on a supported Galaxy. If neither is ready, use a physical card or ask the merchant what else it accepts.
First identify what failed
“Unavailable” can mean the wallet app will not open, your card cannot be added, your phone does not meet contactless or security requirements, or a payment is being declined at the reader. The fix depends on which problem you have: switching apps will not make an unsupported card eligible or repair a phone that lacks the required hardware.
- Wallet app or card setup problem: check whether another wallet supports your phone, country and issuing bank/card.
- Phone requirement problem: confirm that the device has NFC and meets the wallet’s security requirements. Installing another wallet may not help if it does not.
- Tap or decline problem: verify that the shop accepts contactless payments, that NFC is enabled, and that the card is active. A decline can require help from the card issuer.
Check whether another wallet fits
Wallet availability is not enough on its own: support must line up across your device, country, card issuer and the merchant’s payment terminal. Check the current official availability information before relying on an alternative, since supported banks, cards and device models can vary.

Apple Pay
For an iPhone or Apple Watch, check Apple’s countries and regions that support Apple Pay and confirm card eligibility with your bank. Apple says in-store payments use NFC and can work without Wi-Fi or cellular service; transaction history may not appear until the device reconnects. Ask your bank about fees when paying overseas. Samsung Wallet
Samsung Wallet is an option only if your Galaxy device, card and market are supported. Check Samsung’s country and device availability list; Samsung notes that model availability varies slightly between markets.
Get a contactless payment working
If your phone and card should be eligible but the tap fails, work through these checks in order. The merchant must accept contactless payments, and the card generally needs to be added to the wallet before you reach the reader.

- Check terminal support. Look for the contactless symbol or ask the cashier whether the terminal accepts mobile-wallet payments.
- Turn on NFC. Check your phone settings and make sure the relevant wallet is selected for contactless payments where that setting is available.
- Position the phone at the reader. The NFC antenna location differs by device. Hold that part near the reader until it accepts or rejects the payment; if you do not know its location, try moving the phone slowly across the reader.
- Remove a thick case and retry. Samsung says a thick third-party case can interfere with the signal. Mastercard’s May 2024 merchant implementation guide also recommends removing a cover when a tap fails.
- Check the card and issuer. Make sure card setup is complete and contact the bank if the card is declined or suspended. Repeated attempts will not resolve an issuer restriction.
Google’s tap-to-pay help lists NFC, Google Wallet as the default NFC wallet, a supported payment method for the country, a screen lock and device security requirements among its setup conditions. These are Google Wallet-specific instructions, but they illustrate why changing wallets does not bypass hardware, card or security requirements. Samsung’s transaction troubleshooting guidance covers NFC activation, reader compatibility and phone placement. Mastercard’s May 2024 Tap on Phone implementation guide is merchant guidance, not a guarantee that an individual card or wallet is eligible.

If you cannot confirm eligibility or fix the tap at checkout, use a physical payment card if you have one, or ask the merchant which other methods it accepts. A local bank app or QR payment may work in some places, but availability depends on your country, bank and the merchant; do not assume it is a universal substitute.
