At checkout, select Apple Pay or Google Pay if the merchant offers it, review the payment and delivery details, then authenticate or confirm the purchase. A wallet button is available only when the merchant, your card, device, and region support that payment.
Pay with a digital wallet at checkout
- Check for a wallet button. At the merchant’s checkout, look for Apple Pay or Google Pay. The merchant must offer that option and accept the underlying payment method you plan to use. For Apple’s supported online checkout flow, see Make purchases with Apple Pay. Google explains its website and app flow in Pay on an app or website.
- Select the wallet and review the details. Choose the payment button, then confirm which saved card or other payment method will be charged. Check the billing, shipping, and contact information before proceeding. Google’s checkout flow may ask you to choose a saved payment method and shipping address.
- Authenticate or confirm. Follow the prompt on your device. Apple’s supported-device flow can use Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode; the prompt depends on your device and its setup. Other wallets and devices may use a different confirmation method.
- Save the order confirmation. Keep the merchant’s confirmation and order details in case you need to ask about delivery, a return, or a refund.
Why a wallet option may be missing
A digital wallet is a checkout option, not a payment method every online store must accept. Even where a merchant supports a wallet, your intended card may not be eligible for that wallet or usable in your region. Availability can also depend on the device, browser, and checkout setup.
If the button is absent or your card does not appear, check that the card is added to the wallet and contact your card issuer about eligibility. The wallet provider’s country and payment-method guidance can help clarify regional limits: Apple Pay participating banks and card issuers and Find supported payment methods. The merchant’s checkout determines whether that wallet is offered for the purchase.
What happens to your card details
Apple Pay
Apple says that for Apple Pay, “Your actual card number is never shared with merchants, and each transaction uses a unique security code.” This describes Apple’s payment process; it does not mean that every payment risk is eliminated. Details are in Apple’s Apple Pay purchasing guide.

Google Pay virtual cards
Some eligible Google Pay users can use a virtual card number for certain online or in-app payments. It replaces the actual card number shared with the merchant, but availability is limited to supported banks, networks, and regions, and some merchants opt out. A saved Google Wallet card does not necessarily have a virtual number. See Google’s explanation of virtual cards.
Which wallet should you choose?
There is no universal winner: the practical choice is the wallet the merchant accepts that works with your card, region, and device. Compare the options shown at checkout using these points:

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.

- Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Whether the merchant displays the wallet button.
- Whether your card and region are eligible.
- Which device and authentication steps the checkout requires.
- What card-data protections the wallet provider documents.
- Who handles order issues, refunds, and payment disputes.
These factors vary by purchase. A wallet’s presence does not guarantee that every saved card will work.
Refunds, disputes, and subscription payments
Orders, returns, and refunds
Start with the merchant for delivery, return, or refund questions because the merchant fulfills the order. Google says it “doesn’t hold or process your funds”; a Google Pay transaction is between the merchant and the institution that issued the payment method. Google does not initiate or track refunds or manage disputes or chargebacks. See Google Pay’s guidance on transactions, refunds, and disputes.

An incorrect or unresolved charge
If the merchant does not resolve an incorrect charge and the money has left your account, contact the card issuer to ask about its dispute or chargeback process. Keep the order confirmation and relevant merchant correspondence.
Apple Pay preauthorized payments
You can revoke an Apple Pay payment authorization, but Apple cautions that “Revoking the payment authorization doesn’t cancel your service.” If you want to end a subscription, cancel it with the merchant or service provider as well as addressing the payment authorization. See Apple’s guidance on preauthorized payments.

Using Apple Pay across devices
For some supported third-party browsers and websites, Apple documents a cross-device checkout: select Apple Pay on the browsing device, scan the displayed code with an iPhone or iPad, review the payment details on that Apple device, and authenticate there. This is limited to supported websites and regions, so it is not a general workaround for every browser or device combination. Check Apple’s availability and setup guidance for the current requirements.
