Identify your exact installed build, check it against Fortinet’s current FG-IR-26-175 advisory, and use that advisory and the release-specific upgrade documentation to plan and verify the update. The version information available from NVD and CERT-FR does not establish a universally safe target build or a CVE-specific verification command.
What CVE-2026-104286 means for FortiMail
NVD describes CVE-2026-104286 as a path traversal vulnerability. A remote, unauthenticated attacker may be able to send crafted HTTP or HTTPS requests to write arbitrary files on the underlying system. NVD records Fortinet’s CNA severity as 9.8 — Fortinet, 2026 (CVSS 3.1, Critical; AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
CERT-FR’s October 2, 2026, notice says Fortinet reports active exploitation. If your appliance may be affected, prioritize exposure assessment and patch planning; if you suspect it has already been compromised, follow your organization’s incident-response process as well as Fortinet’s current guidance.
Which FortiMail versions are affected, and what should you install?
NVD’s record contains inconsistent version information: its description gives one range, while the Fortinet-attributed product table gives narrower ranges for some branches and includes 7.0. Do not infer that a branch is safe or vulnerable from a simplified range. Compare the exact installed version and build with the current version table in Fortinet advisory FG-IR-26-175.

| 7.0 and other builds | NVD’s Fortinet-attributed product table includes 7.0, but the source material here does not establish a fixed build or current release status for it. | Use the live Fortinet advisory’s affected and fixed version table; do not extrapolate a target from another branch. |
The CERT-FR version list is a dated status snapshot, not proof that those releases remain upcoming or that a listed build is sufficient for every deployment. The live vendor advisory is authoritative for the release table, workarounds, upgrade instructions, and indicators of compromise.
How to patch FortiMail safely
- Record the installed version and build. Use the supported FortiMail administration interface or documentation for your deployment to identify the exact version. Record the appliance’s role and deployment context for your change plan.
- Open Fortinet advisory FG-IR-26-175. Confirm whether the exact installed build is affected and identify the fixed build specified for its branch. Check that the target release is currently available; do not rely on the October 2 CERT-FR list alone.
- Read the release-specific FortiMail upgrade documentation. Follow Fortinet’s supported upgrade path and any prerequisites, backup precautions, and sequencing it prescribes for your starting and target versions. Do not skip intermediate releases or improvise an upgrade path.
- Plan and perform the change using vendor instructions. Schedule the update under your organization’s change-control process. Apply only the vendor-documented procedure for your appliance and release; the available source material does not establish a CVE-specific command sequence or workaround.
- Compare the resulting build with the advisory. After the update, identify the installed version/build again and match it to the fixed release listed for that branch in FG-IR-26-175. Keep the change record and the vendor documentation used for the decision.
How to verify remediation and assess possible compromise
Confirm the fix
Verification means confirming that the appliance is running the fixed build Fortinet specifies for its branch—not merely that an update completed or that its version number increased. Use the current advisory’s release table and any post-upgrade checks it explicitly documents. No CVE-specific verification command or test is established in the source material summarized here, so do not treat an undocumented check as proof of remediation.

If compromise is possible
Because CERT-FR reports active exploitation, an affected or potentially exposed appliance deserves prompt review. Consult FG-IR-26-175 for Fortinet’s indicators of compromise and incident-response guidance, and coordinate investigation and containment with your security team. Do not assume that installing the fixed build proves the appliance was not compromised before patching.
If the live Fortinet advisory or release documentation does not resolve your installed build, target version, upgrade path, or verification result, contact Fortinet support or your authorized service provider before making a production change.
