For a rechargeable Mac Magic Keyboard, connect it to your Mac with a cable that fits the keyboard’s port, turn it on, and let macOS pair it; after pairing, you can unplug it and use Bluetooth. Charge it with a USB-C or Lightning cable to match the keyboard. Firmware updates are automatic, not installed from a manual download. These steps do not apply to Magic Keyboard models for iPad, which attach through the Smart Connector.

First, identify which Magic Keyboard you have

Apple uses the Magic Keyboard name for different products. This guide’s pairing and charging steps are for rechargeable Mac keyboards with a USB-C or Lightning port. An iPad Magic Keyboard or Magic Keyboard Folio attaches to a compatible iPad through its Smart Connector; it does not use the Mac Bluetooth-pairing workflow. If you are unsure, check the keyboard’s back edge for a charging port or identify its model using Apple’s Magic Keyboard setup guidance.

Mac models also differ: some have a standard layout, some add a numeric keypad, and some include Touch ID. Earlier rechargeable keyboards may have Lightning, while newer models use USB-C. Match the cable to both the keyboard port and the Mac or power adapter you plan to connect.

How to pair a Mac Magic Keyboard

If it came with your Mac

Turn on the keyboard using the switch on its back edge. When green is visible at the switch, it is on. Apple says a keyboard supplied with a new Mac should already be paired and connect automatically.

Apple Magic Keyboard - US English , Bluetooth
  • Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
  • It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
  • It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
  • It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

If it is new, separately purchased, or needs pairing again

  1. Connect the keyboard to the Mac with a cable that fits the keyboard and the Mac. Depending on the ports, Apple lists USB-C, USB-C-to-Lightning, and Lightning-to-USB cables.
  2. Turn on the keyboard and check that green is visible at the power switch.
  3. Wait for the cable connection to pair it with the Mac. The connection also charges the keyboard.
  4. Confirm that the keyboard appears in Bluetooth settings. On current macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth; on older releases, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth.
  5. Disconnect the cable to use the keyboard wirelessly.

Apple’s steps are described in its Mac Magic Keyboard setup instructions. A USB-C Mac keyboard, Lightning Mac keyboard, and iPad keyboard do not necessarily share the same setup procedure.

How to charge it and check the battery

Look at the charging port on the back of the keyboard and use a matching USB-C or Lightning cable. The other end can connect to your Mac or a power adapter. Apple advises leaving the keyboard on while it charges for the fastest charging performance, and says you can keep using it during charging. See Apple’s charging instructions.

For the USB-C Magic Keyboard, Apple estimates “about a month or more between charges.” This is Apple’s estimate for that product, not a guarantee for other Magic Keyboard versions or every user. Apple says the estimate is based on testing in August and September 2024 with pre-production devices and systems, and that battery life varies with settings, usage, and other factors. The details appear in Apple’s Magic Keyboard product specifications.

How Magic Keyboard firmware updates work

Magic Keyboard firmware updates are delivered automatically in the background while the keyboard is actively paired with an Apple device running macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or tvOS. Apple’s firmware 2.0.6 notice lists Magic Keyboard, Magic Keyboard (2021), Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad. The update was released January 9, 2024. Apple does not describe a standard manual firmware-download button; see its Magic Keyboard firmware update notice.

Mac-specific update guidance

Apple’s instructions for a documented Mac firmware-update scenario are to check the version in System Information, enable system data and security updates, connect the rechargeable keyboard to the Mac, and leave the Mac idle but awake. In macOS, the option is labeled “Install system data and security updates”; older releases may use a corresponding system-files option. The update runs in the background and may not occur immediately. Apple suggests leaving the keyboard connected overnight if convenient, rather than expecting an on-screen installer or progress indicator. See Apple’s Mac keyboard, mouse, and trackpad firmware guidance.

Apple’s 2.0.6 security notice says that release addressed a Bluetooth session-management issue. Apple described a potential impact requiring physical access to the accessory, with the possibility of extracting its Bluetooth pairing key and monitoring Bluetooth traffic. That description concerns the issue addressed by the dated update; it does not establish that a current, unpatched vulnerability remains.

If an iPad Magic Keyboard is not responding

Do not troubleshoot an iPad Smart Connector keyboard as if it were a Mac Bluetooth keyboard. Apple recommends checking compatibility first: Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later, while other Magic Keyboard devices require iPadOS 14.5 or later, according to Apple’s iPad Magic Keyboard troubleshooting guidance. These requirements apply to the model groups Apple names; check the specific keyboard and iPad compatibility before relying on them.

  1. Update the iPad to a supported iPadOS version.
  2. Disconnect the keyboard and gently clean both Smart Connector surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Remove other cases or covers if applicable, then reconnect the keyboard.
  4. If it still does not respond, restart the iPad.

Choosing the right replacement or cable

Before buying a replacement keyboard or cable, confirm the product type and connector rather than relying on the Magic Keyboard name alone. For a Mac keyboard, check USB-C versus Lightning, standard versus numeric-keypad layout, and whether Touch ID is included and supported by your Mac configuration. For an iPad keyboard, verify the exact iPad model and its compatibility with that keyboard. Apple’s product and support pages provide the relevant details for specific current models.
