Put .package files in your user Downloads folder, then sort them into a small, consistent hierarchy. A practical starting point is 00_New_Testing, 01_Mods_Hacks, 02_Build, 03_Buy, 04_CAS_BodyShop, 05_Defaults_Overrides, and 99_Readmes. Test new files in isolation, keep meshes with their recolors and documentation, and move any hack that misbehaves back to the Downloads root. This turns a single, unmanageable folder into a reversible system for identifying and removing broken content.
Where Sims 2 custom content belongs
For most installations, user-created .package files go here:
Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads
Use the user-data folder created by your edition of the game, not the directory where the game program is installed. The folder must be named Downloads with a capital D and a plural “s.” A different spelling or capitalization can prevent the game from reading the files.

Open that installation’s user-data location and confirm that it contains (or can contain) a Downloads folder. Paths vary by edition and operating system, so the folder generated by your own installation is the authoritative location.
Turn on Custom Content
After adding files, enable Custom Content in the game’s options or in the startup dialog. If the game does not display new content after you enable the setting, restart it; the setting and newly indexed files may not take effect until the next launch.
Build a folder structure that is easy to search
Create the following folders directly inside Downloads (you can change the names, but keep the same logic):

Number prefixes keep the same order in every file manager and make the testing lane appear first. You can instead organize by creator when that makes dependency tracking easier. The important property is consistency: every new file should have one predictable destination.

Name files for identification, not decoration
Most custom content can be renamed to include the creator and item or mod name. Descriptive names make a broken file recognizable when you are reviewing a test batch. Keep supplied filenames for large, multi-part hacks, however. Mod The Sims warns that names can affect the order in which related hack files load; changing one part can therefore change behavior. Do not rename those files unless the creator’s instructions explicitly permit it.
Keep dependencies together
Store a mesh, its recolors and the associated read-me or requirements notes in the same creator or item folder whenever the creator does not require a different layout. A recolor without its mesh may appear invisible or fail to load, while a missing required hack or library can cause errors that look unrelated. If installation notes specify a particular folder arrangement, follow those notes instead of forcing the files into your preferred categories.
Reserve a root-level exception lane
Some hacks do not behave correctly when nested in subfolders. If a hack fails, move its files temporarily to the root of Downloads rather than assuming the mod itself is broken. Keep this root area deliberately small and document why each exception is there. If the creator requires root placement, leave it there permanently.

Subfolder support is not identical across the series. The original game and University have stricter limits, while Nightlife and later releases generally allow much deeper organization.

“Nightlife or later” means the game has the later expansion environment installed; it does not mean every file is guaranteed to work in every combination. When a particular item fails, test it at the root even if its category normally supports subfolders.
Install each file type correctly
.package files
Extract the archive first, then copy the resulting .package files into Downloads or an allowed subfolder. Do not leave them inside a .zip or .rar; the game cannot read a package that is still compressed.
.sims2pack files
Install .sims2pack files with the game’s package installer. They are installation packages, not ordinary downloads that you can make visible simply by copying them into a subfolder. After installation, inspect the resulting content in your user-data folders and organize the package files that were created.

Read-me and requirement files
Keep the creator’s read-me, compatibility notes and requirement list in 99_Readmes or beside the related content. A text file does not load as game content, so preserving it will not affect the game while it gives you the information needed for later updates or removal.

A reversible workflow for new downloads
- Back up first. Copy the entire Sims 2 user-data folder, or at least
Downloadsand your saves, to a separate location before a large reorganization. - Extract and inspect. Open each archive, identify the file types, read the installation notes and record required meshes or other dependencies.
- Use
00_New_Testing. Put the complete new set there, preserving dependencies together. Do not mix an untested download with your established collection. - Test in a controlled save. Use a throwaway or otherwise controlled save rather than risking a long-running household. Check the exact feature the download is meant to change, then look for errors, missing meshes, catalog failures or unexpected behavior.
- Promote working files. Move a confirmed set from
00_New_Testingto its permanent category, retaining creator and item information in the folder name. - Handle failures without deleting immediately. Move the suspect folder out of
Downloadsor into a clearly marked quarantine location. This preserves evidence and makes restoration simple.
Do not test a large collection by repeatedly deleting random files. A move-out and move-back process tells you which change produced the result and protects files you may later discover were merely dependent on a missing mesh.
Find a broken mod with batch isolation
Subfolders are most valuable when they let you narrow a problem systematically. The following half-split method is a practical application of the organizing guidance:
- Confirm the symptom. Reproduce the crash, error, missing object or visual fault in the same controlled save, if possible.
- Separate the broadest category. Move likely groups such as
01_Mods_Hacks,04_CAS_BodyShopor05_Defaults_Overridesout ofDownloads. Launch and check whether the symptom remains. - Keep the failing half. If the symptom disappears, the removed group contains the cause. If it remains, restore that group and investigate another branch.
- Split the suspect group in half again. Move half of its creator or item folders out, test, and repeat. Each cycle reduces the search set without requiring you to remove the whole collection.
- Test dependencies as a unit. Never separate a mesh from its recolors or a multi-file hack while narrowing the cause unless the creator’s instructions say the files are independent.
- Try the root exception. If the suspect is a hack that works when moved to the Downloads root, the subfolder location was the problem. If it still fails at the root, investigate compatibility, a missing requirement or a conflict.
- Restore known-good files. Add files back in small batches, testing after each batch. Keep the confirmed culprit quarantined and record its creator, filename and reason for removal.
When your normal troubleshooting procedure calls for cache maintenance, delete or rename only the relevant cache files and only after backing up. Do not use cache deletion as a substitute for isolating the content that caused the symptom.

A hybrid is usually the most practical: use the numbered function folders at the first level, creator or item folders below them, and keep all untested material in 00_New_Testing.

Clean up an inherited or oversized Downloads folder
Make a backup before bulk deletion. Then work in passes rather than removing files solely because their names look unfamiliar.
- Identify content: Delphy’s Download Organiser can help identify files, show recolor and mesh relationships, and find orphaned content.
- Inspect folders: SimPE’s Scan Folders can assist with examining files when you need more detail.
- Preview before removal: Clean Installer can display previews for supported content, helping you recognize items you no longer want.
- Remove duplicates: Keep one known-good copy and place uncertain duplicates in quarantine until the game has been tested.
- Check meshes: Content whose required mesh is missing may be useless or produce missing-object symptoms; remove it only after confirming that no recolors depend on it.
After each cleanup batch, launch the game and check a controlled save. If a deletion causes a new problem, restore the backup or quarantined files instead of downloading replacements immediately.
Common mistakes and targeted fixes
Nothing appears in the game
- Verify the file is an extracted
.package, not a compressed archive. - Confirm it is under the user-data
Downloadsfolder, not the program-installation directory. - Check the exact spelling and capitalization of
Downloads. - Enable Custom Content and restart the game.
- Check whether the file category is one of the subfolder restrictions for the original game or University.
A hack works in the root but not in a subfolder
Leave that hack at the root of Downloads if its creator permits it, and record the exception in a read-me or inventory note. Avoid renaming a multi-part hack while testing because filename order can matter.
An object is invisible or shows a missing mesh
Restore the mesh and its recolors as one set. Check the creator’s requirements and keep the dependency files together. An orphaned recolor can remain in the folder without providing a usable object.
The game breaks after a large install
Move the newest batch to quarantine, reproduce the symptom, and use half-splitting to isolate the responsible folder. Test with a controlled save and add confirmed files back in small batches. This is safer than deleting the entire Downloads folder and losing track of which content was involved.
A collection file behaves differently from ordinary content
Collections have their own folder rules. Follow the collection’s installation instructions rather than assuming that the general function-folder hierarchy applies.
A maintenance routine that keeps troubleshooting easy
- Keep an up-to-date backup before reorganizing or deleting content.
- Route every new download through
00_New_Testing. - Store creator name, item name and requirements in the folder or a companion read-me.
- Keep meshes, recolors and multi-file hacks together unless the creator specifies otherwise.
- Review
05_Defaults_Overridesseparately because a replacement can affect many lots at once. - Maintain a short inventory of root-level exceptions and why they need that location.
- Periodically remove duplicates, orphaned files and content you no longer use, but only after a backup.
With this routine, a new failure points to a recent, identifiable batch instead of an anonymous file somewhere in a large folder. The organization itself does not make incompatible content compatible; it makes the cause visible and the recovery reversible.
