To organize pinned apps in Windows 11, open Start and drag pins to reorder them. Drag one pin onto another to create a folder, then rename it and add related apps. You can also pin or unpin apps from search results and change how the All apps section is displayed.
Reorder pinned apps
Open Start and drag a pinned app from its current position to the spot you want in the pinned grid. This changes where the shortcut appears; it does not move or uninstall the app. Microsoft documents the same action in its Start menu customization instructions.
Group apps in a folder
- Open Start.
- Drag one pinned app onto another. Windows creates a folder containing both pins.
- Open the folder and rename it.
- Drag additional pinned apps into the folder as needed.
To take an app out, open the folder and drag its pin back to the pinned grid. When just one pin remains, Windows removes the folder from Start.
Choose folder names that match how you use the apps—for example, Work, Communication, or Creative. These are organizing ideas, not required Windows categories. Keep frequently launched apps as individual pins if you prefer to see and open them directly; folders can make related groups easier to scan but add a step to reach an app inside.

Pin or remove an app
Pin an app
Search for the app from Start or the taskbar. Right-click the search result and select Pin to Start. Microsoft also documents pinning a folder through File Explorer and pinning a website in Microsoft Edge using More options > More tools > Pin to Start.
Unpin an app
Right-click its pin in Start and select Unpin from Start. This removes the shortcut from Start; it is not an uninstall action.

Change the All apps view and reduce clutter
The Pinned and All sections remember their last-used view. In All apps, you can choose Category, Grid, or List. These views change how you browse the app list, rather than rearranging pinned shortcuts.
Windows also lets you unpin items or turn off recommendation providers. If recommendations are all turned off—or everything is unpinned—the corresponding sections collapse. These controls affect Start’s recommendations and section behavior, not the apps themselves. See Microsoft’s Start menu customization instructions for the available controls.

Navigate pins with a keyboard
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance describes using Tab and the arrow keys to move through pinned apps. Press a letter to jump to a pinned app whose name begins with that letter; first-letter navigation also works within a folder. These are navigation options, not an alternative way to create or manage folders. See Microsoft’s Start menu accessibility guidance.
