Keep approved visual-test baselines versioned, give every image a stable identity, and compare it only in a controlled rendering environment. Decide explicitly which branch supplies the baseline and how changes are approved; otherwise, a valid UI update can look like a regression—or a real regression can be hidden by an accidental baseline change.
Choose where baselines live
For a small or self-managed test suite, Playwright snapshots are a straightforward repository-based option: by default, snapshot files live beside the test, so reviewers can inspect image changes with the code change. Commit approved snapshots to Git. If that layout does not suit a larger repository, configure Playwright’s snapshotPathTemplate to put snapshots in a deliberate structure. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
A hosted visual-testing service is an alternative when you want its own review history and branch-aware workflow. Chromatic documents linking snapshots to Git commits and cloud capture for Playwright tests. Percy offers different approval units depending on its Git strategy. These choices change where history is kept and how approval works; they do not remove the need to define baseline ownership and rendering conditions.
Give each baseline a stable identity
A useful baseline name should tell a reviewer which test or component state it represents and which rendering project produced it. Include browser and platform context in filenames or paths, or use a project name in a multi-project Playwright configuration. Avoid opaque generated identities that make it hard to connect an image diff to the UI being tested.

Treat the rendering environment as part of the comparison key. Browser, operating system, fonts, and rendering configuration can affect pixels. Generate and compare baselines in the same controlled environment; using a CI container is one way to keep runs consistent across operating systems. Playwright’s guidance covers snapshot identity and environment consistency in its visual comparison documentation and CI documentation.
Define branch ownership and inheritance
Write down which accepted baseline a branch should compare against. Common policies include comparing with the branch’s own last accepted baseline, the branch it started from, or newly accepted baselines merged from an integration branch. Pick one policy that fits how your team reviews UI changes and make it visible to contributors.

Hosted services may apply their own branch-history rules. Chromatic documents baseline behavior that can vary with merge shape and configuration; a Git history rewrite can also leave its baseline history divergent if no follow-up build updates it. Check the service’s documented behavior before relying on a rebase or rewritten history to select a particular baseline. Chromatic’s branches and baselines guide explains its rules.
Make baseline updates an explicit approval
- Run the visual test in the agreed browser and environment so a diff reflects the intended comparison.
- Review the changed image alongside the code or visual-test review. Confirm that the difference is an expected UI change, not an environment shift or unintended regression.
- Update the reference only after approval. In Playwright,
--update-snapshotsregenerates references; running it does not itself establish that the change is correct. - Keep the updated baseline with its context. In a repository workflow, commit the image change with the relevant test or UI change. In a hosted workflow, use the service’s review and approval path.
Choose approval granularity deliberately for hosted reviews. Percy documents whole-build approval in its Git strategy and individual-snapshot approval in Visual Git. BrowserStack recommends Git for most teams and Visual Git when tests run separately from the development pipeline or snapshots are approved individually. See BrowserStack’s baseline management documentation.

Keep Git and CI context intact
For repository-managed snapshots, run visual tests in a consistent CI environment and review changed image files through the ordinary code-review process. Playwright documents CI runs in containers and running tests after a successful deployment, including against the deployment target URL.
Hosted services can use commit and pull-request metadata to associate builds and choose baselines. Chromatic says its CLI needs Git available for commit and PR association. Ensure the CI checkout supplies the Git context expected by the service, rather than treating a build as an isolated image upload. See Chromatic’s Playwright setup and branching and baselines guide.

Choose a workflow by what your team needs to own
| Decision | Repository-managed Playwright | Hosted visual service |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline location | Snapshot files sit beside tests by default and can be committed and reviewed in Git. | Snapshots and review history are managed by the service; Chromatic links snapshots to Git commits. |
| Branch selection | Follows repository conventions and the snapshot files selected for the run. | Service-specific rules determine baseline history; Chromatic documents merge handling and configuration options. |
| Approval unit | Review changed image files with the code change. | Depends on product and mode; Percy documents whole-build approval in Git mode and individual-snapshot approval in Visual Git. |
| Environment control | Your team configures local and CI browser and OS environments; rendering variation remains a concern. | Hosted capture can centralize review, but verify the service’s capture settings against the environment match you require. Chromatic describes cloud capture for Playwright tests. |
| Git and CI | Git stores and reviews the assets; run comparisons in consistent CI. | Git metadata may drive branch and commit association; Chromatic requires Git to be available to its CLI. |
Choose repository-managed snapshots when Git review and direct ownership of image files suit your team. Consider hosted review when its branch history or approval workflow fits better, and confirm its baseline-selection and capture behavior before standardizing on it.

If you need a screenshot of a page for documentation or a separate visual check rather than a committed test baseline, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for defining branch ownership or approving test baselines. One GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does updating a Playwright snapshot mean the visual change is approved?
No. The update option regenerates the reference image; a reviewer still needs to confirm that the change is expected.
Can a feature branch use a different baseline from its target branch?
That depends on your stated branch policy and, for hosted tools, the service’s baseline-history rules. Document the intended inheritance rather than assuming merges or rebases select it automatically.
