Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a local, automated YouTube live stream, organize your files first, then load the videos into OBS Studio’s VLC Video source. It plays a playlist in order or shuffle and can loop it. Keep the playlist, OBS encoding, and YouTube broadcast setup as separate parts of the workflow so you can tell whether a problem is in playback or delivery.
1. Organize the video library before building the playlist
A clear catalog makes it easier to choose the right videos, check their order, and spot missing or duplicated files before the stream runs unattended. These are practical organization habits, not OBS requirements; OBS does not prescribe a folder layout or naming convention.
Use filenames that explain the content and order
Choose a consistent format that includes a title or subject and, where order matters, a sequence number. For example: Morning-Prayers_01_Opening.mp4 and Morning-Prayers_02_Readings.mp4. Keep sequence numbers padded consistently, such as 01, 02, and 10, so files are easier to scan in a file manager. This naming example is a suggested convention, not an OBS rule.
Keep an inventory and divide very large collections when useful
Maintain a simple catalog with each file’s title, topic or series, sequence, and location. Split a very large collection into themed or scheduled groups if that makes the playlist easier to audit. The OBS documentation describes playlist functionality but does not state a maximum playlist size or a way to automatically turn an entire folder into a playlist.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Store the library somewhere that remains connected and accessible to the computer running OBS. An external drive may be useful depending on your collection and backup needs, but no particular capacity, drive type, or model is established as necessary. Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable recordings.
2. Build an ordered or shuffled playlist in OBS
OBS’s VLC Video source is the documented route for playing a list of local media files. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. For 64-bit OBS, OBS’s documentation says to install 64-bit VLC. Consult the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide for current source options and controls.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Install VLC and OBS. Match the architecture for the documented 64-bit case: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will be sent to YouTube, then use the source’s playlist controls to add the local video files you want to play. Arrange the list in the intended sequence and check filenames against your catalog.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable looping if playback should restart after the last playlist item. Enable shuffle only if randomized order is appropriate; do not rely on it for a sequence that must stay fixed.
- Set visibility behavior deliberately. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback while the source is not visible. Choose the behavior that fits your scenes, and verify it if the source may be hidden during a transition.
- Preview the playlist. Confirm that the first item, transitions, audio, and intended loop or shuffle behavior work before connecting the scene to a live broadcast.
3. Connect OBS playback to a YouTube live broadcast
The playlist is not itself the live stream. The VLC source plays media, OBS composes and encodes the outgoing feed, and YouTube presents the live broadcast to viewers. Google distinguishes a liveBroadcast event from the incoming liveStream feed and documents how they are bound, including a 24/7 feed use case, in its Understanding Broadcasts and Streams guide.
- Create or select a live broadcast in YouTube. In YouTube’s live control workflow, obtain the connection details for the encoder. Use the stream key carefully; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Configure OBS for the broadcast. Enter the YouTube stream connection details in OBS’s streaming settings and select the appropriate output settings for your content and upload connection.
- Choose compatible quality settings. YouTube’s recommendations for resolution and bitrate vary by codec and frame rate. Check its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring the encoder rather than treating a bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its general encoder workflow.
- Test before going live. Use representative video with motion and audio, and verify the preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing with representative content, choosing quality reliable for the available upload connection, and monitoring stream health during the event.
If you build a more advanced integration, YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference exposes stream state and health fields, including configuration issues. That can help distinguish an encoder or delivery problem from a playlist that has stopped playing.

4. Troubleshoot the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source choices | Software installation or architecture | Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS documentation. |
| Playlist does not start or a file is skipped | Local file access or playlist entry | Check that the file still exists at the listed location and is accessible to the OBS computer. Re-add or correct the playlist entry, then preview the source. |
| Playlist ends instead of restarting | Source playback setting | Check that loop is enabled for the VLC Video source. |
| Playback order changes unexpectedly | Shuffle setting or playlist order | Disable shuffle where a fixed sequence matters, then inspect the source playlist against your catalog. |
| Playback pauses or stops when a scene changes | Source visibility behavior | Check whether the source is set to pause or stop while not visible; select the intended behavior. |
| OBS preview plays, but YouTube does not receive a usable feed | Encoder or YouTube connection | Check OBS’s stream connection details, selected output settings, upload reliability, and YouTube stream-health information. A working local playlist does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving the feed. |
| Audio or movement is missing or unreliable | Source media, encoding, or connection | Test a representative clip with both sound and motion. Confirm the source playback and monitor YouTube stream health during a test. |
5. Choose between local playback and a cloud service
OBS with a VLC Video source is a practical choice when you want to manage local files and operate the encoder yourself. You remain responsible for keeping the computer, storage, OBS, and internet connection available while the stream runs. YouTube’s broadcast and stream resources are distinct, so troubleshoot local playback separately from encoder delivery and broadcast status.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing and plan details. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
