To improve your chances of appearing in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, make your pages crawlable and eligible to appear with a Search snippet, then publish useful, distinctive content that people can find and understand. Google says its AI Search features use its core Search systems; there is no guaranteed formula or special AI-only optimization that ensures inclusion.
What does Google require for a page to appear in an AI answer?
Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as part of Search, not as a separate search engine with a separate optimization checklist. The starting point is ordinary Search eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in these AI features. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee Google will crawl, index, or show the page, or that it will select it as a link.
That makes AI visibility an outcome to work toward, not a setting you can switch on. Prioritize access, useful content, and clear site organization rather than tactics that promise a place in an AI response.
How should you optimize your site, step by step?
-
Check that Google can access important pages
Start with your key pages, such as important guides, service pages, or product information. Check that your robots.txt rules, content delivery network (CDN), and hosting configuration are not blocking Google from accessing them. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to investigate a specific URL and diagnose possible access or indexing issues. A successful check is a diagnostic result, not a guarantee that Google will serve the page.

Confirm Search eligibility before focusing on AI visibility
Use Search Console to check whether a page is indexed and whether technical issues could prevent it from appearing with a Search snippet. Resolve relevant problems before trying to optimize for a particular AI feature. Google’s requirements establish eligibility, not a promise of inclusion.
-
Make the page worth finding
Give readers helpful, satisfying information that adds something beyond commodity material. Bring relevant expertise to the subject, answer the reader’s real question, and make the page useful in its own right. Google’s guidance emphasizes helpful content; changing the wording into a supposed “AI style” is not a substitute for substance.
-
Help people and crawlers find related pages
Organize the site so that important pages are discoverable through internal links and the relationships among topics are clear. Descriptive URLs can also help people interpret a result. A sitemap may help Google discover URLs in some cases, but it is not required for Search.
-
Keep key information available as text
Make important information accessible in page text, and use images or video when they genuinely help explain the subject. Semantic HTML can improve readability and accessibility, but perfect markup is not a prerequisite for appearing in Google’s AI Search features.

Use structured data only when it accurately describes the page
Valid structured data may make a page eligible for certain ordinary Search rich-result features. It is not a special ticket to an AI answer. Keep the markup consistent with content that visitors can see on the page.
-
Measure results and revisit weak points
Use Search Console to monitor technical issues and Search performance, then improve pages where the evidence points to a problem. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Web search performance reporting, so that reporting does not by itself isolate every AI-feature visit.
Which popular AI SEO shortcuts does Google actually recommend?
Google’s guidance does not support treating special files, markup, or copy formatting as requirements for its generative AI Search features.
| Claim or tactic | What Google’s guidance says |
|---|---|
| Add an llms.txt file for Google Search visibility | Google says this is not needed for its Search features and that it ignores llms.txt for Search ranking and visibility. |
| Add special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode | Google says there is no special schema.org markup for generative AI Search. Structured data can still matter for applicable rich-result features. |
| Break every article into tiny chunks | Google says there is no requirement to chunk content in a particular way for these features. |
| Rewrite pages in a special AI-oriented style | Google says an AI-only writing style is not required. Focus on useful content for visitors. |
These points concern eligibility for Google’s Search generative AI features; they do not establish what other search engines or AI products may do. Be cautious of third-party promises that contradict Google’s published guidance.

How can you interpret AI visibility and traffic data?
Google reported in 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users. Those are Google-reported platform figures, not independent measurements or estimates of the traffic any individual site will receive.
Google’s Search leadership also said on August 6, 2025, that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites had been relatively stable year over year overall, and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s aggregate company-reported observation; it does not show that every site or subject area had stable traffic, nor does it predict an individual site’s results.
As of August 31, 2026, Google said AI visibility insights had rolled out to websites worldwide. Search Console interfaces and reports can change, so check the current interface for available insights rather than relying on an assumed menu path. Treat any aggregate platform figures or sitewide reporting as context, not proof of how a specific page performed in an AI answer.
