To make a transparent PNG smaller, first resize it to the largest dimensions it actually needs, then try lossless PNG optimization. If the file is still too large and small color changes are acceptable, test lossy palette reduction with pngquant or convert it to WebP with alpha. Transparency can survive all of these methods; inspect the result at its intended size, especially around soft edges, text and gradients.
Choose a method based on what you need to preserve
There is no single compression setting that works best for every image. Compare byte size and appearance on the actual image, at its intended display size and against the background where it will be used.

Start by measuring and resizing
- Keep a copy of the original. Note its pixel dimensions and file size so you can compare results and revert if necessary.
- Check the largest size you need. If the source is larger than the maximum display dimensions, resize it to those dimensions before compressing. Reducing unused pixels can save bytes without changing the image at its intended display size.
- For responsive websites, prepare suitable alternatives. Rather than sending one oversized image to every device, provide appropriately sized candidates and let the browser choose. See web.dev’s image performance guidance.
Try lossless PNG optimization first
Lossless recompression changes how image data is encoded, not the pixels themselves, though an optimizer may strip metadata. It is the right first test when exact pixel data matters. Compare the output size: Google’s PageSpeed image optimization guidance is explicitly marked outdated and says that an optimization pass can make an already well-optimized image larger. Keep the original if that happens.
Reduce PNG size with pngquant
If you can accept small color changes but need to keep a PNG, try pngquant, a command-line utility for lossy PNG compression. Its documentation says it preserves full alpha transparency. Palette reduction can be effective, but examine antialiased boundaries, semitransparent pixels, gradients, thin strokes and small text for artifacts.

For example, after installing pngquant, run:
pngquant --quality=65-80 --output image-optimized.png --force image.pngThe quality range is a starting point, not a universal recommendation. Adjust it for the specific asset and inspect the result. pngquant documents --quality=min-max; a result below the specified minimum is not saved. Its project page claims reductions of up to 70%, but that is a tool-site claim, not an expected saving for every image.
Compare WebP when the target supports it
WebP supports transparency in both lossless and lossy modes. Lossy WebP can reduce RGB data while retaining alpha; check the image because compression can still affect visible quality. Google’s WebP format documentation, updated August 7, 2025, says lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs and lossy WebP with transparency is typically three times smaller. Those are general comparisons, not guaranteed savings for a particular file. Google’s compression guidance reports an average 60–70% saving when replacing transparent PNG with lossy-plus-alpha WebP; individual results vary.

Google lists native browser support for WebP in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera on its format page. For a website that needs an older-format fallback, use a <picture> element:

cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webpQuality settings are not directly comparable across images or formats. Use the smallest file that still looks right for its actual use. If the receiving application does not support WebP, keep or serve the PNG version.

Check the output where it will be used
Compare original and optimized files at the intended display size and on the intended background. Transparent edges can look different against light and dark backgrounds, so test both if the image may appear on either. Inspect:
- Antialiased edges and semitransparent pixels, which can reveal halos or jaggedness.
- Gradients, where palette reduction or lossy encoding may introduce banding.
- Thin lines and small text, which can blur or break up.
- File dimensions, transparency and actual byte size, not just the format or tool’s quality setting.

Common problems and fixes
- The optimized PNG is larger. The source may already be well optimized. Keep the original or compare another method rather than assuming every pass saves space.
- The PNG looks jagged or its gradients look banded. Lossy palette reduction may be too aggressive for the asset. Try a higher quality range, use lossless optimization, or compare lossless WebP.
- Edges have a halo or look wrong on a different background. Inspect semitransparent pixels against the backgrounds where the image will appear. Re-export using a less aggressive setting if the boundary is damaged.
- The WebP does not display in the target application. Verify that the browser or application supports WebP; keep a PNG fallback when compatibility requires it.
- The image still takes too long to load. Check whether its pixel dimensions exceed its actual display needs. Resize it or serve responsive candidates rather than compressing an unnecessarily oversized source.
