The fastest way to answer shortest-path queries on a large graph depends on the query pattern, edge weights, how often the graph changes, and how many queries reuse it. Start with BFS for unweighted paths or Dijkstra for non-negative weights; for a single source–target query, test bidirectional search. If many point-to-point queries reuse a stable graph, evaluate preprocessing methods such as contraction hierarchies, hub labeling, or transit-node routing—and measure their index costs as well as query latency.

Choose an algorithm for the query and edge weights

First specify what the application asks for: a route between two nodes, paths from one source, paths to one target, paths from multiple sources, or paths between all pairs. Also record whether the graph is directed, whether weights can be negative, and whether you need only a distance or the reconstructed path. These distinctions change which methods are suitable; NetworkX’s shortest-path overview separates these query types and algorithm families.

Method Suitable workload Documented asymptotic cost Important constraint
Breadth-first search (BFS) Unweighted shortest paths, where length is measured in edges or hops O(V + E) Does not account for differing edge weights.
Dijkstra Shortest paths with non-negative edge weights O((V + E) log V) Not suitable when a relevant edge has a negative weight.
Bellman–Ford Shortest paths when negative weights must be supported O(VE) Its documented asymptotic cost can make it expensive on large graphs.
Floyd–Warshall All-pairs shortest paths; NetworkX recommends considering it for dense graphs or all-pairs work O(V³) Solves a different workload from one source–target route.
Johnson All-pairs shortest paths, including graphs with negative weights where applicable O(V(V + E) log V) Its all-pairs scope may not fit a small number of point-to-point queries.

Here, V is the number of vertices and E the number of edges. These are documented asymptotic costs, not measured latency estimates or promises for a particular library, graph, or machine. NetworkX’s Dijkstra documentation states: “Because Dijkstra’s algorithm works only with non-negative edge weights, alternative algorithms such as Bellman-Ford or Johnson’s algorithm are used for graphs with negative weights.”

Speed up a single source–target query

Try a two-frontier search

For an unweighted point-to-point query, test bidirectional BFS; for non-negative weights, test bidirectional Dijkstra. Each search expands from one endpoint, and the search can stop when the two sides meet under the algorithm’s correct stopping condition. NetworkX lists bidirectional variants in its shortest-path documentation. Google OR-Tools describes bounded Dijkstra as its preferred generic implementation for most needs and says its bidirectional Dijkstra implementation might be faster for large graphs; that is a reason to benchmark it, not a guaranteed speedup (OR-Tools Graph and Network Flows README).

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not stop merely because the frontiers have touched: use the stopping rule for the specific algorithm so the returned route remains shortest. Compare distance-only and path-reconstruction workloads separately if the application needs the actual route.

Profile the parts around the search

Record more than elapsed time. Depending on the implementation, graph representation, weight lookup, priority-queue behavior, and path reconstruction may all contribute to measured cost. The sources do not establish which part dominates a given deployment, so profile the real code rather than assuming that changing the algorithm alone will remove the bottleneck.

Use preprocessing when many queries reuse a graph

Contraction hierarchies

Contraction hierarchies (CH) separate one-time preprocessing from later route queries. During preprocessing, the method contracts vertices in an order and adds shortcut edges when needed to preserve shortest-path distances. A query then runs bidirectionally while respecting vertex ranks; shortcuts preserve the paths needed for exact routing. The RoutingKit documentation describes the preprocessing/query separation, while Geisberger and colleagues explain the method and its ordering heuristics in “Exact Routing in Large Road Networks Using Contraction Hierarchies”.

The contraction order matters: heuristics aim to limit edge difference and shortcut growth because shortcuts affect preprocessing work, storage, and query search. CH is therefore a candidate when many point-to-point queries can reuse a graph whose topology and weights remain stable long enough to justify building the index. A changed graph or changed weights may require customization or rebuilding; do not assume an index built for an earlier state remains valid. RoutingKit identifies customizable contraction hierarchies as a separate approach, but the cited sources do not compare current implementations’ update interfaces or rebuild costs.

Hub labeling

Hub labeling stores, for each vertex, labels containing hubs and distances to them. A query intersects the source and target labels and takes the minimum sum of distances through a common hub. For sorted labels, the cited comparison paper gives query time O(|L(s)| + |L(t)|), with storage proportional to the total label sizes; actual label sizes depend on graph structure and preprocessing. See “Sublinear search spaces for shortest path planning in grid and road networks”. These properties are not a promise of the same performance on every graph.

Transit-node routing

Transit-node routing uses access nodes for local regions and precomputes distances among transit nodes. A query combines local access distances with a lookup in the transit-node table. The table’s storage grows quadratically with the number of transit nodes, so query speed must be weighed against index size. The same comparison paper discusses this trade-off.

Hub labels and transit-node routing are options when very fast repeated queries justify substantial precomputed data. Their theoretical properties and results on stated graph models do not establish a universal production winner. Decide whether preprocessing pays off

Preprocessing shifts work from each query into index construction and maintenance. The break-even point depends on how many queries reuse the same graph and weights, how long that state remains valid, and the time and memory needed to build and store the index. Since the cited sources do not give transferable build-time or update-cost figures for a particular deployment, estimate the trade-off using the graph and change pattern the service will actually see.

  • Favor a simple BFS or Dijkstra baseline when query volume is modest, the graph changes frequently, or index storage is constrained.
  • Test CH, hub labeling, or transit-node routing when repeated point-to-point queries dominate and the graph is stable enough to amortize preprocessing.
  • For frequent weight or topology changes, include customization, invalidation, and rebuild work in the comparison; a fast query against a stale index is not a valid result.

Benchmark the operating workload, not an abstract graph

No cited benchmark establishes a universally fastest method. Compare candidates on the intended graph, query distribution, hardware, software implementation, and update pattern. Keep correctness requirements constant: verify exact distances and, when required, reconstructed paths. If approximation is permitted, define that requirement explicitly; the methods discussed here do not establish an approximate-method recommendation.

Measure Why include it
Query latency Shows the cost users experience; report the workload and measurement conditions.
Settled or expanded nodes Helps explain search work independently of elapsed time.
Preprocessing time Captures the up-front cost of CH or another index.
Shortcut or index size and memory use Shows whether the method fits the storage and runtime memory budget.
Update and rebuild cost Captures the cost of keeping precomputed data valid as weights or topology change.
Exactness and path output Confirms that candidates return the result the application actually requires.

Use representative queries, including the distribution of source–target distances and regions seen in production, rather than timing only a convenient route. Report graph and dataset, query set, machine, software version, update state, and measurement method alongside any performance figure. This makes a result interpretable without implying it will transfer to another deployment.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Classify the request: single-pair, single-source, single-target, multi-source, or all-pairs; distance-only or path output.
  2. Check the weights: use BFS for unweighted paths, Dijkstra for non-negative weighted paths, and evaluate a negative-weight-capable method when negative weights are present.
  3. For point-to-point work, test bidirectional search: compare bidirectional BFS or Dijkstra with the baseline using the correct stopping condition.
  4. Count reuse and changes: if many queries share stable topology and weights, measure whether preprocessing can be amortized; include index maintenance.
  5. Compare indexes against constraints: evaluate CH, hub labeling, or transit-node routing for query time, build cost, storage, and update behavior.
  6. Validate on the deployment workload: hold correctness requirements constant and benchmark on the target graph, query mix, implementation, and hardware.
