Use the charging feature available on your iPhone, avoid excessive heat, and choose a charge limit that still gets you through the day. iPhone 15 and later let you set a limit from 80% to 100%; earlier models can use Optimized Battery Charging. Overnight charging and topping up before the battery is empty are both fine.
Choose the right charging setting for your iPhone
The available controls depend on your iPhone model. Apple’s instructions place the controls in different Settings menus:
- iPhone 15 and later: Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and select a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. If you choose 100%, you can also enable Optimized Battery Charging.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and turn on Optimized Battery Charging.
Labels and availability can vary with model and software version. If you do not see a setting described here, check the Battery section in Settings for the options available on your iPhone.
What charge limit should you use on iPhone 15 or later?
Choose a limit based on how much charge you need for ordinary days. A lower limit means less time spent at a high charge level, but also less available runtime before you need to charge again. If you regularly need a full day’s capacity, choose 100% and keep Optimized Battery Charging on.

With a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and may delay charging beyond 80%, then finish closer to the time you usually unplug. It is not guaranteed to pause on every charge. Apple says the feature needs at least 14 days to learn your habits and at least nine charging sessions of five hours or longer in one location before it engages.
A selected limit below 100% may occasionally be exceeded so iPhone can keep its charge-level estimate accurate. The limit is therefore a useful charging preference, not an absolute cap on every occasion.

Should you charge your iPhone to 100%?
Yes, if you need the extra runtime. A 100% limit is a reasonable choice, especially when Optimized Battery Charging is enabled. A lower limit can reduce time spent highly charged, but it is a trade-off rather than a requirement: use the setting that fits your daily needs.
Is it bad to leave an iPhone charging overnight?
No. Apple says iPhone stops charging when full and resumes if the charge level drops below 95%. Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the time the phone spends fully charged when it can predict your routine. Apple Support also says you can charge an iPhone every night even when its battery is not fully depleted.

Should you let the battery drain before charging?
No. Partial charging throughout the day does not harm the battery, according to Apple’s charging guidance. A complete charge cycle means using a total of 100% of battery capacity; that can add up across several partial discharges rather than happening in one go.
Keep your iPhone away from excessive heat
Temperature matters more than trying to follow a rigid charging ritual. Apple advises avoiding use or charging in ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C), because heat at that level can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Apple identifies 62–72°F (16–22°C) as the ideal ambient range.

If iPhone becomes hot or shows a temperature-related charging hold, move it to a cooler place and wait for charging to resume. Do not leave it charging in a hot environment.

Apple’s cycle figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not guarantees for an individual phone. Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles; for iPhone 15 and later, the design target is 80% after 1,000 complete cycles. Actual battery capacity depends on conditions and use.
