Use an HTTPS wa.me link for most websites and mobile-web pages. Put the recipient’s full international phone number after wa.me/, remove the plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes, and leading trunk zero, and optionally add URL-encoded text. On iOS, WhatsApp recommends the same HTTPS universal-link approach for account links; its documented whatsapp:// scheme is available when your native app needs a specific WhatsApp action. WhatsApp Business users can also create a short link with an optional default message.
Choose the right WhatsApp link
The implementation depends on where your link lives and whether it should target a known account. A normal website button, a QR code, an email signature, and a mobile-web page can all use an HTTPS click-to-chat URL. A native iOS app can use that universal link or, for an app-specific action, WhatsApp’s documented custom scheme. A WhatsApp Business short link is useful when you want a business profile page and a link that can be managed from the Business app rather than hand-building a phone-number URL.

How WhatsApp click to chat works
Click to chat lets a visitor begin a conversation without first saving the phone number in the phone’s address book. The link resolves through WhatsApp’s HTTPS service. If WhatsApp is installed, the device may hand off to the app; otherwise the browser can continue to WhatsApp Web or a browser-based WhatsApp page. The exact handoff depends on the device, browser, operating system, and installation state, so describe the action as “Chat on WhatsApp” rather than promising that every tap opens the app.
The destination number must have an active WhatsApp account. A correctly formatted URL cannot create an account or deliver a message to a number that is not registered. Opening the link also does not send a message automatically: any prefilled text appears in the composer, and the visitor chooses whether to edit and send it.

Build a WhatsApp link for a website
1. Gather the destination number
Use the phone number for the person, support queue, or business account that should receive the chat. Convert it to international format before placing it in the URL. WhatsApp’s documented pattern is:
https://wa.me/<international-number>For a United States number, WhatsApp’s example uses the country code 1 followed by the remaining digits:
https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXXDo not copy the formatting people normally use when dialing. The number portion must contain digits only: omit the leading plus sign, spaces, parentheses, brackets, hyphens, and a local leading zero. For example, a local number written with a trunk zero must be converted to its country-code form, not pasted unchanged. Keep the country code; removing it can send the visitor to the wrong destination or make the URL invalid.
2. Add the anchor element
An ordinary HTML anchor is the most robust implementation because it works without JavaScript and gives browsers, screen readers, and keyboard users a normal link target.

If your design uses an icon, keep visible text or an accessible label, preserve sufficient color contrast, and make the whole control large enough to tap comfortably. WhatsApp’s guidance for its official Chat on WhatsApp artwork says to use the button as supplied, use the latest artwork, and keep it visible and readable. Its listed placements include desktop landing pages, contact pages, mobile apps, mobile websites, and third-party templates. The official artwork page is currently available only in English.
3. Prefill a message when it saves typing
Append a text query parameter after a question mark:

Spaces become %20, and reserved characters such as ampersands, question marks, percent signs, quotation marks, and line breaks need encoding so they are not mistaken for URL syntax. Encode the complete message before concatenating it with the number. Do not manually replace only the spaces in a message that contains punctuation.

Keep the destination number separate from the message variable so a user-entered message cannot alter the host or path. A prefilled message is a suggestion, not a submission; the visitor can change it or abandon the chat.
4. Use a no-number share link when the visitor chooses the contact
WhatsApp also documents a URL without a number:
https://wa.me/?text=<URL-encoded-message>This opens a list of contacts for the visitor to choose from while placing the encoded text in the composer. It is appropriate for a “Share this article on WhatsApp” control, where you do not want to route every visitor to your support account. It is not a replacement for a support button with a fixed business destination.
5. Place the link where people expect help
Common placements include a Contact page, pricing or checkout support area, order-confirmation screen, product page, mobile navigation, help article, email signature, and QR code. Put the action near the information that creates the question. For example, an order page can use a message such as “I need help with order 1234,” while a product page can identify the product name or SKU. Avoid inserting sensitive personal data into a URL that may appear in browser history, analytics logs, screenshots, or referrer data.

Use a WhatsApp Business short link
WhatsApp Business automatically generates a short link for an account. In the Business app, open the Business tools area, select the Short link controls, copy the generated link, and place it on your website or Facebook page. The owner can set or edit a default message template, which saves you from manually maintaining a long phone-number URL in every channel.
The customer experience differs by installation state. Someone who has WhatsApp installed is taken to a chat. Someone who follows the link in a web browser sees a page with the business information and messaging option, then taps “Continue to chat.” Anyone with the link can message the business. Depending on the account’s privacy settings, the business profile picture may appear on the browser page.
Use the Business short link when the profile and browser continuation are useful parts of the experience, or when nontechnical staff need to manage the default message in the app. Use a hand-built wa.me URL when you need a particular destination number, campaign-specific text, or a link generated by your website.

Use the documented custom scheme for an app-specific action
WhatsApp also documents the whatsapp:// custom URL scheme. Its action table includes app for opening WhatsApp Messenger and send for opening a new-chat composer; a text parameter can prefill message text. A scheme URL has the general shape shown below, but the exact action and parameters should match the action documented for your iOS implementation:
whatsapp://send?text=<URL-encoded-message>The custom scheme is useful when your native app needs to request a particular WhatsApp action rather than simply link to an account. It is less suitable as the only link for a public website because a browser visitor may not have WhatsApp installed and because custom-scheme behavior is platform-specific.
Configure iOS scheme detection
If your iOS code calls canOpenURL to check whether WhatsApp is installed, add the WhatsApp scheme to the LSApplicationQueriesSchemes array in the app’s Info.plist. Without that declaration, iOS can report that the URL cannot be queried even when the app is present. After the check, provide a fallback that opens the HTTPS universal link or displays an ordinary web option.

Webviews, mobile sites, and cross-platform behavior
An in-app browser or webview can treat external links differently from Safari, Chrome, or WhatsApp Web. Test the HTTPS URL in the actual webview used by your app and decide what should happen when the app is not installed. A universal HTTPS link gives you a browser fallback; a custom scheme may simply fail or show an error if no handler is registered.
For a responsive website, the same HTTPS anchor can serve desktop and mobile visitors. On a phone, it may open the WhatsApp app; on a desktop, it may open WhatsApp Web or a browser handoff. The click-to-chat feature is intended to work on phones and WhatsApp Web, but no single behavior should be promised for every browser, operating-system version, or installation state.
Troubleshoot a link that does not work
“The number is invalid” or the wrong account opens
- Confirm that the number includes the country code.
- Remove the plus sign, spaces, parentheses, brackets, dashes, and any local leading zero.
- Check each digit against the account’s current WhatsApp number.
- Verify that the destination number has an active WhatsApp account.
- Test the complete URL rather than a shortened or copied display label.
The message is garbled or the URL breaks
- URL-encode the entire message, not just spaces.
- Encode ampersands so they do not start another query parameter.
- Encode question marks, percent signs, quotation marks, line breaks, and non-ASCII characters.
- Inspect the final URL in the browser’s address bar and confirm that the
textvalue is one parameter.
The tap opens a browser instead of the app
This can be normal. The visitor may be on a desktop, may not have WhatsApp installed, or may be using a webview that does not hand off to the app. Keep the HTTPS link as the fallback and label the action “Chat on WhatsApp” rather than “Open the app.” Business short links explicitly provide a browser page with a “Continue to chat” step for browser users.

The iOS custom-scheme check always returns false
Check that whatsapp appears in LSApplicationQueriesSchemes, that the URL uses the documented scheme and action, and that your fallback opens the HTTPS link. Do not infer Android behavior from this iOS configuration.

The message appears but is not sent
That is expected. Prefilled text is placed in the message field for review. The visitor must tap WhatsApp’s Send control. Do not describe a click-to-chat link as an automated message sender.
Security, privacy, and accessibility checks
Inspect links before following them
When you receive a WhatsApp link from someone else, inspect the domain and spelling before tapping. WhatsApp warns that suspicious links can use unusual character combinations to imitate legitimate sites. A genuine click-to-chat URL uses the expected wa.me host; a look-alike domain, unexpected redirect, or URL asking for unrelated credentials deserves caution.
Limit information in prefilled text
Anyone who can see the page source, browser history, analytics data, or a copied URL may see the text parameter. Make the control usable without a mouse
