Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics. From there, you can choose a graphics preference for an app or game. Microsoft documents the detailed per-app options flow for Windows 11; on a PC with multiple graphics processors, the available GPU choices can vary by system.
Open Graphics settings
- Select Start, then Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
Microsoft lists this Graphics path in its guidance for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Its battery guidance also points to this page for an app’s Power saving preference.
Choose a graphics preference for an app in Windows 11
- Under Custom options for apps, select the app or game. If it is not shown, the available instructions do not establish a universal way to add it.
- Select Options.
- Choose a preference, then select Save.
- Restart the app or game for the change to take effect, as Microsoft instructs.
What the options mean
| Preference | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| Let Windows decide (Power saving) | Leave the preference to Windows. |
| Power saving | Favor lower power use. Microsoft associates this choice with helping extend battery life. |
| High performance | Favor the higher-performance option when it is available and suits the app or game. |
Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions say the GPU preference applies when the PC has more than one graphics processor. The options are preferences, not measured guarantees: Microsoft does not provide specific battery-life or performance improvements for them. What to know on Windows 10
Microsoft’s current battery guidance documents the same Settings > System > Display > Graphics route and identifies the Power saving app option. The detailed three-choice flow above is documented in Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance; do not assume every Windows 10 build uses identical labels or presents identical controls.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. This support change does not, by itself, mean the Graphics page cannot be opened on an installed Windows 10 PC. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice explains the change.

If the GPU preference is missing
- Check whether the PC has more than one graphics processor; Microsoft makes that a condition for choosing which GPU an app or game uses.
- Available controls and labels can depend on the system and app. The documented guidance does not identify a single fix for every missing option.
- After changing and saving a Windows 11 preference, restart the app or game before checking the result.
