Firefox can open a PDF in its built-in viewer, let you complete interactive text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons, add a typed, drawn, or image signature, and save the edited document. Open the file in Firefox, enter your information only where the PDF provides interactive fields, use the viewer’s signature control when needed, then select Save or Download to create a copy containing your changes. The signature tool is convenient, but Mozilla says it creates a simple annotation—not an authenticated or verified electronic signature—so it may not satisfy forms that require identity checks or certificate-based signing.
What can Firefox’s PDF viewer do?
Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer handles most PDFs displayed on the web. When the PDF action is set to Open in Firefox—the default behavior in Mozilla’s documentation—the file opens in a browser tab without first being saved to your computer.
- Open a PDF link directly in Firefox or open a PDF from the Downloads panel.
- Enter information in interactive text fields.

- In General, find the Applications section.
- Locate the PDF content type, such as Portable Document Format (PDF).
- Set its action to Open in Firefox, then close the settings tab.
- Open the PDF link again, or choose the file from Firefox’s Downloads panel.
The exact wording of the surrounding settings can vary by operating system and Firefox release channel. If a web server sends a PDF with an incorrectly set MIME type, Mozilla notes that the built-in viewer may not display it as expected; that is a problem with how the file is identified, not evidence that every PDF is incompatible.
How do I open a PDF without downloading it first?
Click a PDF link in Firefox. With the PDF action set to Open in Firefox, the document appears in the built-in viewer in a tab, where you can read it immediately. Opening it this way does not itself create a permanent saved copy on your computer.
You can also open a file that Firefox has already downloaded:
- Open the Downloads panel from the Firefox toolbar.
- Select the PDF file.
- Let it open in the built-in viewer.
To keep a local copy of a PDF that you opened from a website, use the viewer’s Save button rather than assuming that viewing it created a download.
How can I tell whether a PDF form is interactive?
Click in a place where the form asks for information. If a text cursor or field highlight appears, that area is interactive. Mozilla specifically documents support for text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons.
Interactive text fields
Click the field and type the requested value. Move through the form by selecting each field that needs an entry; do not assume that text printed on the page is editable.
Checkboxes
Click an interactive checkbox to select or clear it. A visible mark or change in the control indicates that Firefox registered the selection.

Radio buttons
Click the option that applies. Radio buttons normally represent one choice within a group, so selecting one may clear another option in that group.
Scanned or flattened pages
If clicking where a field should be does nothing, the PDF may be a scan or may have had its form fields flattened. Firefox’s documented viewer features do not promise conversion of those pages into editable fields. Ask the sender for an interactive version or use a separate PDF-authoring workflow when you are authorized to create one.
How do I fill out an interactive PDF form in Firefox?
Enter data directly into each interactive field, then save the edited file from the viewer. The following sequence keeps the original file available while you work.
- Open the PDF in Firefox’s viewer.
- Click the first interactive text field and type the requested information.
- Click each checkbox that applies to you.
- Select the appropriate radio button in each group.
- Review the page for fields you may have skipped, including fields on later pages.
- Continue to the save procedure below so the entered values are written to a file.
Firefox’s support documentation names these field types but does not establish that every form control used by PDF software is supported. If a specialized control does not respond, contact the form provider rather than treating the document as complete.
How do I add a signature in Firefox?
Use the PDF viewer’s signature control, choose Add signature (or the equivalent new-signature option), and select one of Firefox’s three input methods. Mozilla says the resulting signature is a simple annotation without authentication or verification.
- Open the signature control in the PDF viewer toolbar.
- Choose the option to add a new signature.
- Select Type, Draw, or Image.
- Create or insert the signature, adjust its placement on the form, and finish the signature action.
- Use the viewer’s save control to preserve the signed copy.
Firefox adds descriptive alternative text automatically to a signature image or annotation. You can edit that alt text before saving if the automatically supplied description is not accurate. If you enable the save-signature option, the signature remains available from the Add signature menu for reuse.
Which signature method should I use?

Are Firefox PDF signatures legally binding?
Do not treat a signature added in Firefox as proof of identity or as a verified electronic-signing event. Mozilla Support’s warning is explicit: “Signatures added using the Firefox PDF viewer are not legally binding e-signatures. They are simple annotations and do not provide authentication or verification.”

How do I save a completed PDF form?
Saving is the step that produces a copy containing your entered fields and annotations. Use the Save button in the PDF viewer toolbar after you finish filling the form or adding a signature.
- Select Save in the viewer toolbar.
- In the save flow presented by Firefox or your operating system, choose a destination folder.
- Enter a filename that distinguishes the completed copy from the blank original.
- Confirm the save operation.
- Open the saved file from its destination and check that your entries and annotations appear.
Mozilla documents saving edited PDFs from the toolbar, but dialog labels and the exact destination prompt are not identical on every platform. Follow the destination and filename controls shown on your system rather than relying on a platform-specific instruction.
What should I do if the PDF opens but I cannot type?
First determine whether the document actually contains interactive fields. Click several expected entry areas and look for a field response.

- Some fields respond and others do not: only the authored interactive controls are available in Firefox; the nonresponsive areas may be static text or unsupported controls.
- The file itself does not display: the server may have supplied an incorrect MIME type, one exception Mozilla identifies for the built-in viewer. Try opening a correctly identified copy supplied by the document owner.
- Your entries vanish after closing the tab: viewing is not saving. Reopen the document, complete the fields again if necessary, and use the viewer’s Save button before closing.
These checks separate a form-design limitation from a saving mistake. They also avoid assuming that every PDF can be edited merely because Firefox can display it.
How can I avoid submitting the wrong PDF?
Keep the blank source and completed copy distinguishable. Use a new filename or a clearly different destination, then reopen the saved file and inspect each page before attaching or uploading it.

- Confirm that text fields contain the intended spelling, dates, and numbers.
- Check every required checkbox and radio-button choice.
- Verify that the signature annotation is positioned over the intended signature line.
- Ensure that the saved copy, not the original blank file, is the one you submit.
This review is especially important when the PDF was opened from a link: opening in the browser and saving a local copy are separate actions.
What does Firefox not establish about PDF compatibility?
