To open an existing GIF, use Photos on Windows, Finder Quick Look on a Mac, or the file or messaging app where it arrived on a phone. The evidence for animation is clearest on Mac: Apple documents Quick Look as a way to play animated GIFs. On Windows, Microsoft lists GIF as a supported Photos format but does not specify animation behavior for every version. Mobile apps and device behavior vary, so a GIF that appears still may need to be opened in a different viewer.
How do I open a GIF file in Windows?
In File Explorer, find the .gif file and open it with Photos. Microsoft lists GIF as a supported photo format in its Photos app guidance. If the file is not visible in the Photos gallery, add the folder that contains it: in Photos, open Gallery, choose Add folder, and select the folder. Pictures appears in the gallery by default.
Microsoft’s guidance confirms GIF format support, but does not describe animation playback across every current Windows build. If Photos shows only one frame, try opening the file in a web browser or another installed image viewer that supports animated GIFs.
How do I play an animated GIF on a Mac?
Use Finder Quick Look for playback
In Finder, select the GIF and press and hold the Space bar if its preview does not appear automatically. Apple specifically documents Quick Look as a way to play an animated GIF in its Mac GIF guidance.

Use Preview to inspect individual frames
Preview opens a GIF and can show its constituent frames as still images. Choose View > Thumbnails, then select the disclosure arrow next to the file name in the sidebar to reveal the frames. This is for inspecting frames; Apple’s documented playback route is Quick Look.
How do I play a GIF on an iPhone or iPad?
Open the GIF from the app or location where you received or saved it. If it appears as a still image, try opening it in a browser or a photo app that supports animated GIFs. This is general troubleshooting guidance; the reviewed Apple-specific evidence does not confirm steps for playing an existing GIF in the native Photos app.

Google Photos has a documented way to create an animation from selected photos and videos: open Google Photos, go to Create, choose Animation, select photos, and tap Create. That feature is for making a new animation, not proof of how Apple Photos plays an existing GIF. See Google Photos’ iPhone and iPad help.
How do I play a GIF on Android?
Start with the file manager or the app where the GIF was received. Open the file and, if prompted, choose a photo viewer or browser. The exact result depends on the device, Android version, and installed apps; there is no single documented workflow established for every Android phone.

Google Photos documents creating an animation from photos: open the app, tap Create, choose Animation, select photos, and tap Create. This makes a GIF-style animation from photos; it does not establish how every Android gallery opens an existing GIF. See Google Photos’ Android help.

A viewer may be showing a still frame instead of playing the animation, or the app may not support animated GIF playback in that context. Try opening the file in another browser or photo viewer. On a Mac, use Finder Quick Look for documented playback; Preview’s frame thumbnails are for viewing still frames, not continuous playback.
On phones, the available sources do not establish one universal fix: the behavior can depend on the app and device configuration. If the file stays still in one app, try the app where it was received, the device’s browser, or another photo viewer that supports animation.
