You can open and edit many Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without paying for Microsoft 365. For basic browser editing, use Microsoft’s free web apps; if your files are already in Google Drive, edit them there. For offline desktop editing at no cost, try LibreOffice. Choose a paid one-time Office edition only if you need installed Microsoft apps or features that the free options lack.
Choose an option based on how you work

For a basic change to a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX, start with a free web editor. If you need to work offline, choose a desktop suite. If the file depends on macros or intricate layout, check that the relevant feature works in your chosen app before relying on it.
Use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint free in a browser
Sign in with a Microsoft account and open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on the web. Microsoft’s free option provides browser versions of the apps and 5 GB of OneDrive online storage; it does not provide the installed desktop apps. Office for the web can edit common formats such as DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Microsoft lists legacy DOC, XLS, and PPT files as converted to newer formats for editing, so do not assume an older file will behave identically. The Office for the web service description documents supported formats and feature differences.

Know the feature limits before choosing it
Web versions do not offer every desktop capability. For example, Excel for the web cannot create or run VBA macros. It can open and edit a VBA-enabled workbook without removing the VBA embedded in it, but you need desktop Excel to run or create those macros. Some advanced Word layout functions and offline viewing or authoring capabilities are also desktop-only, as described in Microsoft’s feature comparison.
Use the browser apps when the task is ordinary editing and the file’s required features are supported. If you need to work without internet, or your workflow depends on desktop-only functions, use a desktop option instead.

Edit Office files in Google Drive
If your documents already live in Drive, Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can edit Office files directly. Changes can be saved in the original Office format, so you can continue working with a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX rather than converting it first. Google explains the workflow in its guide to working with Microsoft Office files.
Convert a file only when you need Google-specific features such as add-ons or Apps Script. Conversion creates a Google-format copy; it does not mean you are still editing the original Office file. Keep track of which version you and your collaborators are changing to avoid splitting edits between the copy and the original.

Use LibreOffice for free desktop editing
LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite with Writer for documents, Calc for spreadsheets, and Impress for presentations. It is the main no-cost option here if you want installed software and offline editing. See the official LibreOffice overview.
LibreOffice can open and save many Microsoft Office formats, but no competing suite should be assumed to reproduce every complex document, spreadsheet, or slide deck perfectly. If a file must round-trip to Microsoft Office, test a representative copy and inspect the saved result before replacing the original.

When a one-time Microsoft Office purchase makes sense
If you specifically need installed Microsoft apps but do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription, Office Home 2024 is a one-time-purchase option. Microsoft says it is licensed for one computer, with PC and Mac options; it does not include upgrades to later major releases. Compare the edition and terms on Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 page before buying.
This route is most relevant when compatibility with desktop Microsoft apps or desktop-only functions is essential. If your needs are limited to basic edits, try the free options first.

Protect the original and check the result
- Make a separate copy. Keep an untouched original before opening, converting, or saving a file in another suite.
- Check the parts that matter. Review page layout, formulas, macros, and presentation slides after editing or exporting. Pay special attention to complex files or a change in file format.
- Use PDF for final sharing, not continued editing. PDF is intended to preserve a document’s layout, but it is not easy to edit. Microsoft’s file format reference also describes conversion caveats, including possible formatting loss when ODS spreadsheets are opened and saved in Excel.
