Steam Frame accessory circuit boards released in KiCad use the native .kicad_pcb format. Install a current KiCad release, open the supplied project (preferably through its .kicad_pro file), synchronize the board with its schematic using Tools → Update PCB from Schematic… (F8), then edit and validate the layout before exporting fabrication files. A legacy .brd file can be read by current KiCad but cannot be written by the current board editor, so save any converted design as .kicad_pcb.
Identify the file you actually have
KiCad stores a board layout in a file whose name ends in .kicad_pcb. The kicad_pcb token inside the file identifies it as a KiCad board. The file contains the board outline, copper layers, tracks, vias, zones, footprints, text, mounting features and other layout data.
A file ending in .brd is the older KiCad 4.x-and-earlier board format. A current PCB Editor can generally open that legacy format, but it does not write changes back to .brd. When prompted to convert or save, create a native .kicad_pcb copy and keep the original legacy file untouched.
| File or folder | What it normally contains | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
.kicad_pcb |
Native KiCad board layout | Open in PCB Editor; save edits in this format |
.brd |
Legacy KiCad 4.x-and-earlier board | Readable by current KiCad, but save the converted result as .kicad_pcb |
.kicad_sch |
KiCad schematic and its electrical relationships | Keep with the board when supplied; use it to update footprints and nets |
.kicad_pro |
KiCad project settings and project-level context | Open this file first when a complete project is provided |
.pretty folder and .kicad_mod files |
Footprint libraries and individual footprint definitions | Preserve their relative paths so footprints resolve correctly |
.kicad_dru |
Custom board-design rules | Keep beside the project and review its rules in Board Setup |
A board can contain enough embedded information to open by itself, but a complete project supplies the intended schematic, footprint libraries and design rules. Missing companion files can leave a board looking correct while silently losing the context needed for reliable editing.

Prepare a safe working copy
Install a current KiCad release
Install KiCad for your operating system before opening the files. The PCB Editor is distributed for Linux, Apple macOS and Windows, and KiCad project files are designed to be cross-platform. Use a release compatible with the project and read any version note included with the Steam Frame package. Do not overwrite the supplied files during your first opening.
Preserve the project structure
- Copy the entire downloaded project directory to a separate working directory.
- Keep the board, schematic, project file, footprint folders and any
.kicad_drufile in their original relative locations. - Rename the copy to indicate your modification, such as
frame-hub-prototype, while leaving the source archive unchanged. - Record which KiCad release opened the file and which revision of the Steam Frame package you used.
Do not copy only the visible board file if the download includes a project. A relative footprint or rule path that worked in the original directory may fail after files are separated.
Open a Steam Frame board in KiCad
Open the complete project
- Start KiCad Manager.
- Choose Open Existing Project (the exact wording can vary slightly by KiCad release) and select the supplied
.kicad_profile. - In the project window, launch PCB Editor. Select the board listed by the project, or open its
.kicad_pcbfile from the project tree. - If KiCad reports missing libraries or rules, stop and fix the paths before making layout changes. Opening with unresolved footprints can produce a misleading result.
Open a board directly
If no project file is supplied, launch PCB Editor and use File → Open, then select the .kicad_pcb file. You can also open the file through the operating system after associating the extension with KiCad. Direct opening is suitable for inspection, but you will need to set up the project context yourself if you later edit the design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOpen a legacy board
Use File → Open on the .brd file. KiCad may display a conversion notice. Save the converted board under a new .kicad_pcb name in your working copy. Check every layer, footprint and rule after conversion; legacy formats do not carry every modern KiCad feature.
Understand what the Steam Frame release contains
Contemporary reporting about Valve’s Steam Frame hardware-file release describes a mixture of mechanical CAD and electrical-interface material. The reported package includes mechanical files for the core module, headstrap and controllers, plus a minimal USB hub example made in KiCad and an Altium USB 3.0 hub example. The exact filenames and revisions can change, so use the current Valve-hosted package and its readme to identify the board you are opening.

The KiCad USB hub example is a starting design, not proof that every accessory built from it will fit or operate safely. A mechanical model and an electrical reference answer different questions: the model describes envelopes, mounting and clearances, while the board and schematic describe nets, components and routing. Keep both available while editing.
Check the license before sharing hardware
A secondary guide reports that Valve described the Steam Frame CAD and electrical-interface files as available for non-commercial use, with instructions and a contact process for commercial projects. Treat that as a description of the release terms, not a blanket permission for every future revision. Read the license or readme shipped with the exact files you downloaded before publishing, selling, manufacturing for others or redistributing a modified design.
Do not label a homemade board “official” or “certified” unless Valve has expressly authorized that claim. A design can be electrically compatible with an interface while still lacking Valve approval, safety evaluation or a fit test.
Inspect the board before changing it
Confirm the layer stack and outline
In PCB Editor, inspect the board in the 2D view before moving anything. Locate the closed board outline on the Edge.Cuts layer. Check the copper-layer count, dielectric stackup, board thickness and any impedance or manufacturing notes in File → Board Setup. A shape drawn on a copper or user layer is not automatically a manufacturable outline.
Find mechanical constraints
- Identify mounting holes, slots, connector cutouts and datum features.
- Check connector orientation and the direction in which a plug or cable approaches the accessory.
- Look for keep-out areas, courtyard boundaries and 3D models that show interference with the Steam Frame enclosure.
- Compare the board outline and mounting geometry with the corresponding mechanical reference files.
Inventory electrical features
Identify the expansion connector, power-input pins, USB transceiver or hub components, status indicators and test points. Turn on the appropriate silkscreen, fabrication and courtyard layers when necessary. If reference designators or values are hidden, use the Properties panel or the footprint inspection tools rather than guessing from appearance.

Synchronize the schematic and board before layout edits
When a .kicad_sch file is supplied, KiCad’s recommended workflow is to transfer the schematic’s footprints and net connections to the board before changing layout. In PCB Editor choose Tools → Update PCB from Schematic… (F8). Review the proposed additions, removals and changes in the dialog before applying them.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the schematic in the same project and save it if KiCad asks to update its format.
- Open the board in PCB Editor.
- Press F8, or choose Tools → Update PCB from Schematic….
- Read each change category. A new footprint, changed footprint association or altered net is a design change, not a harmless synchronization message.
- Apply the intended updates, place any newly added footprints, then save both the schematic and board.
Do not use an old board layout as the source of truth after changing the schematic. Conversely, do not delete a footprint from the board merely because it is inconvenient; remove or alter the corresponding schematic item first, then run F8 again. This keeps the netlist and component set aligned.
Edit placement, routing and footprints
Move or add components
Use PCB Editor’s selection and move tools to adjust placement while watching ratsnest connections, courtyard clearances and the enclosure reference. Keep high-speed or sensitive paths short where the schematic and design rules require it. Preserve connector locations and mounting-hole relationships unless your mechanical design intentionally changes them.
Edit tracks, vias and copper zones
Route tracks on the intended copper layers, add vias only where the stackup and manufacturer allow them, and respect the net class assigned to each connection. For power paths, verify the required width and allowable current in Board Setup or the supplied custom rules rather than copying a nearby trace. After routing changes, refill zones with Edit → Fill All Zones (B) so thermal connections and copper pours reflect the current geometry.
Change a footprint safely
For a one-board change, edit the footprint instance on the board or make a board-local copy. Opening a shared library footprint and saving over it can alter every project that references that library. Use Footprint Editor when you need a reusable library change, and then deliberately update the board instances. Inspect pad numbers, courtyard, silkscreen, solder-mask openings and the 3D model after any footprint edit.

Keep the schematic synchronized after electrical changes
Moving a footprint does not change connectivity, but adding, deleting or replacing a component can. Make electrical changes in the schematic, run F8, resolve the resulting placement or net updates, and then route the board. If you edit only the board to force a connection, the next schematic update can undo it or create an unconnected net.
Review Board Setup and design rules
Open File → Board Setup before final routing. Review the physical stackup, solder-mask and copper constraints, net classes, pre-defined sizes and any custom rules. A supplied .kicad_dru file may define clearances or classes that are not obvious from the visual layout.
- Net classes: confirm widths, clearances, via sizes and layer permissions for power, USB and other signal groups.
- Clearance rules: verify that the selected manufacturer can produce the minimum spacing and drill sizes.
- Unconnected-net policy: distinguish an intentional no-connect from a missing track or pad assignment.
- Layer and zone settings: ensure planes and pours use the intended nets and do not cross prohibited regions.
- Custom constraints: read rule expressions that target particular connectors, footprints or net names.
Do not assume that importing or copying a board carries every rule correctly. KiCad can preserve many settings, but imported or converted data may map a foreign tool’s constraints imperfectly.
Importing a board from another EDA format
If the accessory arrives as an Altium Designer, Altium CircuitMaker/Studio, Cadence Allegro, CADSTAR, Eagle, PADS or Solidworks PCB board, use KiCad’s import workflow rather than renaming the file extension. Import creates a new KiCad board; it does not merge the foreign design into an existing board.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose the appropriate import command in KiCad’s project or PCB tools and select the original foreign-format board.
- Choose a destination in your working project and save the result as
.kicad_pcb. - Resolve missing footprints, layer mappings and net-name warnings immediately.
- Open Board Setup and rebuild or verify stackup, net classes and manufacturing constraints.
- Refill zones with Edit → Fill All Zones (B).
- Run Design Rules Checker and inspect every warning that affects connectivity, clearance, courtyard or manufacturability.
Never treat a successful import as proof of equivalence. Foreign formats can represent rules, embedded models or special objects differently, so compare the imported board with the source documentation and schematic before fabrication.

Validate a modified Steam Frame accessory
Run Design Rules Checker
Run KiCad’s Design Rules Checker after routing and again after the final zone refill. Resolve clearance, track-width, unconnected-net, courtyard and custom-rule violations that apply to your design. Read the rule name and the two objects involved; dismissing a warning without understanding it can hide a real short, insufficient spacing or misplaced component.
Check connectivity and net assignments
- Confirm that every expansion-port pin maps to the intended schematic net.
- Check that power and ground pads are not swapped by a footprint or connector orientation error.
- Inspect the ratsnest for remaining unintended connections.
- Verify that test points, shields and no-connect flags match the schematic.
Inspect zones and copper
Refill all zones, then inspect pours at the board edge, around mounting holes and near connector pads. Look for isolated copper islands, missing thermal reliefs and zones assigned to the wrong net. A zone that appears filled before a geometry change can be stale until it is refilled.
Use both 2D and 3D views
The 2D view reveals tracks, clearances, layers and rule markers. The 3D viewer can expose reversed connectors, incorrect component heights, missing models and mechanical interference. Compare connector position, board thickness, holes, cutouts and keep-outs with the Steam Frame mechanical reference. A visual fit check is not a substitute for a tolerance analysis or an electrical safety review.
Verify interface limits against current documentation
Before ordering, confirm the expansion-port pinout, power limits and any signal requirements against the current Valve documentation for the hardware revision you are targeting. The example board’s existence does not establish that your changes meet those limits. Pay particular attention to cable orientation, power entry, over-current protection and any thermal path required by your enclosure.
The published files do not constitute a finished-accessory safety or fit test. The person modifying the design remains responsible for electrical margins, mechanical tolerances, connector retention, heat, ESD and compliance obligations applicable to the intended use.
Export fabrication files only after validation
Opening and editing a board does not require manufacturing output. Export only when the design passes your review and you are ready to send it to a fabricator.
- Save the final schematic and
.kicad_pcbin a clearly versioned project directory. - Refill zones and run Design Rules Checker one final time.
- Inspect the board outline on
Edge.Cuts, drill locations, slots and layer visibility. - Use PCB Editor’s fabrication-output commands to generate the files your manufacturer requests.
- Review the generated plots in a viewer or KiCad’s preview before uploading them.
- Send the complete set requested by the manufacturer, including drill data and any readme or stackup notes; do not send a single Gerber layer and assume the rest is implicit.
KiCad’s PCB Editor supports Gerber, IPC-2581, ODB++, GenCAD, PDF, SVG and other export formats. The correct choice depends on the fabricator. Preserve the native project alongside exported files so a manufacturing question can be traced back to the exact board revision.

Quick Recap
Common problems and recovery steps
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The file will not open | It is not a KiCad board, is incomplete, or was damaged during download | Confirm the extension and reopen the original archive; use KiCad’s import command for a foreign EDA format instead of renaming it |
A .brd opens but cannot be saved |
It is the legacy KiCad 4.x-and-earlier format | Save a converted copy as .kicad_pcb; retain the original for reference |
| Footprints show as missing or empty | Relative library paths were broken or the project was split apart | Restore the supplied .pretty and .kicad_mod folders, reopen the .kicad_pro project and resolve library paths before editing |
| F8 proposes unexpected deletions or new parts | The schematic and board represent different revisions | Stop, compare the schematic revision and board backup, then apply only intentional changes |
| Many clearance or width errors appear after import | Foreign rules were not mapped exactly | Rebuild net classes and stackup in Board Setup, then rerun the checker and inspect each affected net |
| A copper pour stops short or leaves islands | Zones were not refilled after geometry or rule changes | Use Edit → Fill All Zones (B), then inspect zone assignments and edge clearances |
| The board passes DRC but does not fit | Mechanical envelope, connector direction or tolerances were not checked | Compare 2D and 3D geometry with the mechanical reference, including holes, keep-outs, cable approach and component height |
| The accessory powers incorrectly | Pinout, footprint numbering or power limits were assumed rather than verified | Compare the current interface documentation with the schematic and board, then correct the source design and resynchronize |
Pre-order checklist
- The working copy is separate from the supplied package, and its KiCad version and source revision are recorded.
- The project opens through
.kicad_prowhen available, with schematic, footprints and custom rules resolving without errors. - The board outline is closed on
