What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To open an HTML webpage, enter its web address in a browser and press Enter. To open an HTML file saved on your computer, double-click the .html or .htm file, choose Open with if necessary, or use the browser’s Open File command. A simple static page can usually be viewed directly; pages that use server-side code, JavaScript modules, fetch(), routing, or other HTTP-only behavior should be opened through a local web server.
Open an online HTML webpage
- Start Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, or another installed browser.
- Click the address bar (or press
Ctrl+Lon Windows/Linux orCommand+Lon macOS). - Type the complete address, such as
https://example.com/page.html. - Press Enter (Windows/Linux) or Return (macOS).
The browser requests the resource from a server and renders the returned HTML. An online address normally begins with http:// or https://. If you omit the scheme, the browser may treat what you typed as a search query instead of a URL.
If you received a link
Clicking an HTML link opens it in the browser associated with your operating system. For a link copied as plain text, paste it into the address bar rather than a search box on a webpage.
Open an HTML file saved on your computer
Method 1: Double-click the file
- Open File Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS, or your Linux file manager.
- Browse to the file ending in
.htmlor.htm. - Double-click it.
- If prompted, select Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, or another browser.
The resulting address normally starts with file:, for example file:///Users/alex/site/index.html. A file: page is read from your device; it has not been uploaded or published on the internet.

Method 2: Use Open with
If double-clicking opens a text editor or another program, right-click the file and choose Open with, then select your browser. On macOS, Control-click the file and choose Open With. To make that browser the default for future HTML files, use the operating system’s option to change the default application for .html and .htm files.
Method 3: Open the file from the browser
In the browser, choose its Open File command (often under the File menu), or use the keyboard shortcut shown by that browser. Select the HTML file and confirm. You can also drag the file from your file manager into an open browser window.
Check that the file is really HTML
- Show file extensions in your file manager and confirm the name ends in
.htmlor.htm. - Watch for a hidden second extension such as
index.html.txt. Rename it toindex.htmlafter enabling extension visibility. - Open the file in a text editor and check that it contains HTML markup such as
<html>,<head>, and<body>. A browser may display plain text if the file was saved as text rather than HTML. - Save the document as UTF-8 HTML when your editor offers a format choice.
When a local web server is the better choice
Direct file: opening is convenient for a self-contained static document whose relative CSS, images, and scripts work from local storage. It is not equivalent to serving the project over HTTP. Use a local server when the page depends on any of the following:
- Server-side code such as PHP, Python, Node.js, or a framework development server.
- JavaScript modules,
fetch(), or APIs that require an HTTP origin. - Client-side routing that expects a host and path rather than a file URL.
- Browser security rules that block local cross-file requests.
- Behavior that must match deployment on an HTTP or HTTPS site.
Start a simple Python server
- Open a terminal or command prompt.
- Change to the project folder. For example,
cd path/to/your-project. - Run
python -m http.server 8000. On some systems the command ispython3 -m http.server 8000. - Open
http://localhost:8000/in your browser. - Open a file by adding its relative path, such as
http://localhost:8000/index.html. - Stop the server with
Ctrl+Cwhen finished.
The terminal prints the address and port being used. If port 8000 is occupied, choose another, such as python -m http.server 8080, and open the matching port.

Use your project’s own development server when required
Frameworks and back-end applications usually provide a start command in their documentation. Run that command from the project directory and open the exact http://localhost:PORT/ address it reports. A static file server cannot execute server-side code.
Fix common opening problems
Double-clicking opens a text editor
The file association is wrong. Use Open with and select a browser, then change the default application if you want double-clicking to open HTML in that browser.
The browser shows source code instead of a rendered page
Confirm the extension is .html or .htm, not .html.txt. Check that the document contains valid HTML and was not saved by the editor as plain text. If you are opening a downloaded response, the server may have supplied a text or download content type instead of text/html.
Styles, images, or scripts are missing
Check every relative path and capitalization. A reference such as css/site.css is resolved relative to the HTML file or URL, so keep the expected folder structure. Ensure the referenced files actually exist and are readable. If scripts use modules or fetch(), serve the project through localhost instead of file:.

A page is blank
Open the browser developer tools and inspect the Console for JavaScript errors and the Network panel for failed requests. Verify that the HTML has visible content and that a script did not hide it. Try the page through a local server to distinguish file-origin restrictions from application errors.
A link downloads instead of displaying
The browser or server may be treating the resource as a download. Check the response’s content type and disposition, and verify that the resource is intended to be HTML. A browser can display a resource, hand it to another application, or download it depending on its type and handling.
Relative links work online but not locally
Make sure links do not depend on a server root or rewrite rule. A path beginning with / points to the host root online and may not map to your local folder. Use a local server and configure the same base path your deployed site uses.
Choose between a file URL and localhost
| Situation | Best opening method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One static HTML file | Double-click or Open File | Fastest way to inspect local markup. |
| Static page with ordinary relative assets | Either method | Direct opening is convenient; localhost is closer to deployment. |
Modules, fetch(), or browser-origin restrictions |
Local HTTP server | The page receives an HTTP origin. |
| Server-side application | Application’s development server | Server code must execute before the browser receives HTML. |
| Public website | https:// URL |
The browser fetches the deployed resource from its server. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a rendered image or PDF of a webpage rather than interactively inspect a local file, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between .html and .htm?
They are equivalent filename extensions for HTML documents. Browser behavior is normally the same; use the extension expected by your project or server.
Best Value
Can I open HTML on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Tap the file in a file manager or cloud-storage app and choose a browser if the operating system offers that option. For development projects, use a local development server or deploy the page to a web host.
Does opening a file with file:// publish it online?
No. A file URL points to storage on your device and is not automatically available to other people.
Why does localhost use a port number?
The port identifies the particular local server process. Open the exact port printed by the server, such as 8000 or 8080.
