If you have a separate .mobi file in Downloads or Drive, use a compatible reader app or convert an accessible file with software such as Calibre. The correct route depends on whether you are reading a purchased Kindle book or opening a standalone file.
First, identify what you have
- Kindle library book: The title was purchased or claimed through Amazon and appears in your Kindle library.
- Local MOBI file: A separate
.mobifile is stored in your Chromebook’s Downloads folder, Google Drive, USB storage, or another location.
These cases are different. Kindle Cloud Reader is designed to display books associated with your Amazon account; it is not documented here as a tool for importing an arbitrary local MOBI file.
Read a Kindle library book in Chrome
- Open Chrome on your Chromebook.
- Open Kindle Cloud Reader from Amazon’s Kindle website.
- Sign in with the Amazon account used to purchase or receive the book.
- Choose the title from your Kindle library and open it.
Amazon describes Cloud Reader as a Kindle reader that appears in a webpage, so this method requires browser access and the correct account. It does not establish that a local MOBI file can be uploaded into Cloud Reader.
Why the Files app may not open a local MOBI
Google’s Chromebook supported-file documentation does not list MOBI among the file types guaranteed to work in the built-in Files app. Double-clicking the file may therefore show an “Unknown file type” message instead of opening a reader.

Saving the file to Google Drive can make it available to a web application, but Drive itself should not be treated as a MOBI reader. If ChromeOS cannot identify the file, choose an application that explicitly supports local MOBI files.
Use an Android reader app, if your Chromebook supports Google Play
Check whether Play Store is available
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Look for Google Play preferences or the Play Store option.
Google Play is available only on some Chromebook models. Work- or school-managed devices can have it disabled, and Android-app support varies by model. Devices launched in or after 2019 generally support Android apps unless the device documentation says otherwise, but older models should be checked individually.

Verify MOBI support before relying on an app
Install a reader only if its current description or documentation explicitly lists MOBI support. Then open the app, choose its Open, Import, or equivalent command, and select the file from Files > Downloads, Google Drive, or connected storage.
An app may install successfully yet lack local MOBI import, so installation alone does not prove compatibility. Managed-device policies can also prevent installation or access to local files.

Convert an accessible MOBI file with Calibre
Calibre documents workflows for converting ebook formats, including EPUB and MOBI. A typical conversion route is:
- Install Calibre on a computer that supports it.
- Add the MOBI file to the Calibre library.
- Select the book and choose Convert books.
- Choose an output format such as EPUB when appropriate.
- Transfer the converted file to the Chromebook and open it with a reader that supports the output format.
This works only when the particular file is usable and eligible for conversion. Do not assume that a Kindle file protected by DRM can be converted; conversion software documentation does not establish that access restrictions can be bypassed. You should use only files you are authorized to access and convert.

What Amazon’s MOBI policy does—and does not—mean
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing stopped accepting MOBI uploads for reflowable ebooks on August 1, 2021, and for fixed-layout ebooks on March 18, 2025. Amazon lists formats such as EPUB, DOCX, and KPF for current publishing workflows.
Those dates describe author-upload requirements for KDP. They do not prove that every older MOBI file is unreadable, nor do they determine whether your Chromebook or a particular app can open one.

Troubleshooting “Unknown file type”
- Confirm that the filename really ends in
.mobiand is not a different file with a renamed extension. - If it is a purchased Kindle title, stop trying to open the downloaded file and use the Kindle library in Cloud Reader instead.
- If it is local, move it to a location your chosen reader can access, such as Downloads or Drive.
- Check the reader’s current documentation for local MOBI support.
- On a managed Chromebook, ask the administrator whether Android apps or external files are restricted.
- If conversion fails, treat DRM or file corruption as possible causes rather than assuming the Chromebook is defective.
