Normalize each prerecorded episode before adding it to your continuous YouTube Live playlist: measure its loudness, apply consistent loudness and true-peak limits, then listen to the result and episode transitions. Keep that audio work separate from YouTube encoder settings—bitrate is not a loudness target, and YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a podcast LUFS requirement.
What audio normalization does—and what it does not
Loudness normalization helps episodes play at a more consistent perceived level. It is different from merely matching sample peaks: two episodes with similar peaks can still sound very different in average loudness. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports EBU R 128-style loudness normalization and controls for integrated loudness (I), loudness range (LRA), and maximum true peak (TP). FFmpeg loudnorm documentation
Normalization does not repair clipping already baked into a recording, remove background noise, automatically balance different speakers, or guarantee that the result sounds good. Strong level differences within an episode may call for dynamic processing, which can alter natural dynamics and speech emphasis. Listen to the processed material rather than treating a meter reading as proof of quality.
What LUFS should podcast audio use for YouTube Live?
YouTube’s cited live encoder settings specify audio encoding and transmission parameters, but do not state an integrated-loudness target for podcast streams. Do not treat −14 LUFS, −16 LUFS, or any other figure as an official YouTube podcast requirement on that basis. Choose a consistent editorial target for your library, then evaluate it in an actual test stream.

For context, EBU R 128 version 5.0 recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors in its broadcast context. Normalize prerecorded episodes before building the playlist
1. Measure representative episodes
Measure full episodes where practical, including the quietest and loudest episodes in the library. Also listen to representative sections and transitions. The goal is episode-to-episode consistency, not flattening every quiet moment and emphatic phrase into the same level.
2. Choose a target and true-peak ceiling
Set an integrated loudness target and a maximum true-peak limit that suit your material and intended sound. Integrated loudness is an average programme-level target; true peak is a ceiling intended to manage peaks between samples. They address different problems. No single podcast preset is established by the cited platform guidance. If you use −23 LUFS as a starting point, understand that it reflects the EBU broadcast recommendation, not a YouTube mandate.

3. Process a file and inspect the result
FFmpeg supports single-pass normalization for files and livestreams, and a two-pass workflow for files. A first measurement pass can inform a second normalization pass; a live input cannot wait for a second pass. The filter may fall back from linear to dynamic mode if measured conditions cannot satisfy the requested limits. Behavior and filter availability depend on the FFmpeg version and build. This illustrative single-pass command is an example configuration, not a tested command or guaranteed preset:

4. Audition before replacing source files
Listen at a normal playback level to quiet speech, loud speech, music, pauses, and transitions between episodes. Check for audible pumping, lost emphasis, unexpected level jumps, or peaks that still sound distorted. If a recording is already clipped or noisy, return to the source or editing stage; loudness normalization alone cannot undo those defects.
Configure the YouTube Live encoder separately
YouTube’s live encoder guide recommends AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz sample rate, 128 kbps for stereo audio, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). It recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. These are encoding and transport settings, not loudness targets. Check the current YouTube guidance and your encoder’s labels, which can vary by software. Test and monitor a continuous stream
Before relying on a 24/7 playlist, test with representative audio and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube advises testing before streaming, keeping upload bitrate within available outbound bandwidth with 20% headroom, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. - Check episode transitions, long silences, and the playlist loop point.
- Watch for clipping, unexpected silence, dropped connections, and playback that stops looping.
- Have a recovery plan for the playback or streaming system you use.
The cited guidance does not establish a particular continuous-playback implementation or a 24/7 uptime design. Test the system you choose rather than assuming that an encoder setting guarantees uninterrupted playback.
