Clearing existing alerts only dismisses them; it does not prevent new ones.
Choose the control that matches the alert
| What you want | Use this setting | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Disable alerts from one installed app | Turn that app’s Notifications switch off | Chromebook apps |
| Quiet app alerts temporarily or broadly | Do Not Disturb in Focus controls | App notifications across the Chromebook |
| Block alerts from a website or browser extension | Chrome notification permissions | Websites and extensions in Chrome |
| Dismiss alerts already on screen | Clear the individual alert or choose Clear all | Current notification list only |
How do I stop notifications from one Chromebook app?
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Notifications.
- Find the app and switch Notifications off.
This disables future notifications from that installed app while leaving the app itself installed and usable. Chromebook labels can vary slightly by ChromeOS version or language.
How do I mute all app notifications temporarily?
- Select the time area to open Quick Settings.
- Open the Focus controls.
- Turn Do Not Disturb on.
Do Not Disturb is a broad quieting control. Google’s Chromebook Help says Do Not Disturb is turned on by default when Focus Mode is active. Turn it off again when you want normal alerts to return. Use the per-app switch instead when one app should remain silent independently of other apps.
How do I block notifications from a website or extension?
Website notifications are controlled by Chrome, not by the installed-app notification list.

- Select Notifications.
- Set the default behavior or block a specific site.
Chrome can deliver notifications from websites and extensions. Google Chromebook Help explains that Chrome alerts you when a website, app, or extension requests permission to send notifications.
How do I stop a sender from the notification itself?
- Open the notification area beside the clock.
- On the notification, select its Settings control.
- Uncheck the listed site, app, or extension to stop future notifications from that sender.
If you choose Clear for one alert or Clear all, you remove only the notifications currently displayed. The sender can still notify you later unless you change its setting.

Why am I still getting Chrome notifications?
The alert comes from a website
Review Chrome’s notification permissions at Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications. Block the individual site or change the default permission.
The alert comes from an installed app
Check the Chromebook app control at Settings > Apps > Notifications. Chrome’s site settings do not replace the notification switch for a separately installed app.

Clearing the notification list affects existing alerts only. Use the sender’s Settings control or the relevant app or site permission to prevent new alerts.
Chrome removed an unused site permission
Chrome may remove notification permission from a site you have not visited for a while. To review permissions removed for unused sites, open Chrome Settings > Privacy and security > Safety Check. Revisit the site if you want to grant permission again.
