Use an in-place upgrade or conversion when you only want a larger chest or Magic Chest functionality. Enshrouded’s 1.0 storage changes were designed to let you upgrade a chest without emptying it or picking it up. If you need the chest in a different physical location, use a different process: transfer every item to your backpack or a temporary chest, pick up the empty chest, place it, and then restore the contents. The game generally prevents filled chests and other props from being destroyed, but that safeguard is not a promise that every filled-chest relocation scenario is safe.
First decide whether you are upgrading or moving
“Replace” can mean three different operations in Enshrouded. They do not have the same inventory behavior.

| Operation | Must you empty the chest? | Does the chest change position? | Workshop coverage check | Manual item work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing chest to a larger tier | No. The 1.0 upgrade system is intended to work with contents inside. | No | Usually unchanged, because the chest remains where it was | None for the stored inventory |
| Convert ordinary storage to a Magic Chest | No. The documented conversion is performed in place. | No | Confirm the chest’s Magic Chest coverage after conversion | None for the stored inventory |
| Move the furniture to another spot | Yes, as the conservative and safest procedure | Yes | Yes; the new location may be outside a workshop’s range | Move the contents out and back |
| Replace it with a newly crafted chest | Transfer the contents before discarding or dismantling the old chest | The new chest occupies a different spot | Yes, for the new chest | Full transfer between containers |
If your goal is capacity or automatic workshop access, do not physically pick up the chest. Use its in-place option instead. Physical relocation is for a base redesign, not for changing the chest’s tier.
Upgrade or convert a chest without emptying it
Keen Games’ Enshrouded 1.0 release notes state that storage chests can be upgraded in place without emptying them and picking them up as crafting resources. The same notes describe converting storage chests to Magic Chests without cleaning them out first. This is the intended way to preserve an inventory while changing the chest itself.
#1 Best Overall
In-place upgrade procedure
- Stand at the chest you want to improve and interact with it.
- Choose the chest’s upgrade option rather than a pickup, dismantle, or removal action. The exact wording can vary with the chest tier and current game build.
- Confirm that the displayed recipe and required materials are for the intended larger tier.
- Complete the upgrade while the items remain in the chest.
- Open the resulting chest and verify that the inventory is present and that the slot count has increased as expected.
Do not move items into your backpack merely because you are changing from a smaller storage model to a larger one. Emptying is unnecessary for the documented in-place workflow and creates avoidable opportunities for a missed stack.
Convert ordinary storage to a Magic Chest
- Interact with the existing storage chest.
- Select the conversion option that changes it to a Magic Chest.
- Check the confirmation screen for the required materials and the resulting chest type.
- Confirm the conversion without removing the stored materials.
- Open the converted chest and test a nearby workshop that should be able to use its contents.
A conversion changes the chest’s behavior and crafting access; it is not a request to create an empty replacement beside the old container. Keep the original chest in place until the conversion has completed and its contents are visible.

- Make sure you are interacting with the chest itself, not a nearby workshop or decorative prop.
- Check that you have the materials shown by the current recipe.
- Look for an upgrade or conversion entry in the interaction menu instead of selecting pickup.
- If the chest is part of a crowded build, move your character close enough for the chest’s own interaction prompt to appear.
- Record the chest tier and game version before assuming the inventory must be moved; labels and requirements can change between builds.
Move a Magic Chest to another location safely
No official note cited here guarantees that a filled Magic Chest can always be picked up and placed elsewhere while preserving its inventory. Patch #14 says it is generally no longer possible to destroy filled chests and other props that contain items, with some exceptions. That protection reduces the risk of accidental destruction, but it is not the same as a universal, documented “pick up filled chest” procedure. Emptying first removes the uncertainty.
Prepare a temporary destination
- Choose the new location and make sure the floor or supporting surface is ready for the chest.
- Place a temporary chest nearby, or clear enough backpack space to hold every item and stack from the Magic Chest.
- If you use a temporary chest, open it first and confirm that it has enough free slots. Do not begin a transfer that leaves the final stacks without a known container.
Transfer every item
- Open the Magic Chest and move each stack into your backpack or the temporary chest.
- Check all pages of the inventory, not just the first visible row.
- Pay attention to partial stacks, rare materials, quest-related objects, and items with similar icons.
- When the chest appears empty, close and reopen it once. This second check helps catch a stack that was not moved or a slot that was overlooked.
The critical condition is that the target chest is empty before you attempt to pick it up. If your backpack fills during the transfer, stop and add another temporary container rather than dropping items on the ground.
Pick up and place the chest
- With the chest confirmed empty, use the pickup action.
- Carry the chest to the prepared location and place it.
- Open it immediately to confirm that the placed object is the expected chest and that its interaction menu works.
- If placement fails, leave the empty chest in your inventory or at the original safe location until you have a valid surface. Do not discard it while the contents are still in a temporary container.
Restore the inventory
- Open the newly placed Magic Chest.
- Move the temporary stacks back into it, checking that each category and partial stack is accounted for.
- Reopen the chest after the transfer and compare its contents with the temporary chest or your transfer list.
- Only after the new chest is verified should you remove the temporary chest or return it to normal use.
This sequence treats the move as a controlled inventory transfer rather than relying on undocumented behavior for filled furniture.
Replace a chest with a newly crafted one
Sometimes the old chest is damaged, inconveniently placed, or no longer the model you want. In that case, craft the replacement first and keep the original intact until the transfer is complete.
- Craft the new chest and place it close to the old one, where both can be opened without walking back and forth.
- Open the old chest and move its contents into the new chest, a temporary chest, or your backpack.
- Verify the new chest’s capacity and interaction behavior before dismantling or removing the old one.
- Check that no stack remains in the old container.
- Keep the old chest available until you have tested workshop access and confirmed that all important materials are in the replacement.
Crafting a replacement does not automatically transfer an inventory. Treat the two containers as independent until you perform and verify the transfer yourself.
Check workshop access after a move
Magic Chest contents can be used by workshops within the relevant range. Moving a chest can therefore change whether crafting stations can see its materials, even though the inventory itself survived the move.
Rank #2
Small Magic Chest range
The maintained Small Magic Chest reference lists 24 slots and describes workshop access within an approximately 100-meter circular area. “Approximately” matters: range information can change with game updates, and the practical result depends on the current build. Use the figure as a planning guide, then verify the actual coverage in your game.
Verification procedure
- Place the moved or converted chest at its final position.
- Go to a workshop that should be inside the chest’s coverage.
- Begin a recipe requiring a material stored only in that Magic Chest.
- Confirm that the recipe recognizes the material without moving the item into your backpack.
- If the material is unavailable, move the chest closer to the workshop or use the current build’s coverage behavior as your guide rather than assuming the old location’s range still applies.
Large-base caveat
The Enormous Magic Chest is listed as the highest-capacity Magic Chest, with 72 slots, and is described in the maintained storage reference as usable throughout the Flame Altar base. Treat that as a behavior to verify against your current game build before relying on it for a base-wide logistics plan. A chest’s listed capacity and its effective workshop coverage are separate properties.

The following capacities are listed in the 2026 maintained storage reference. They describe slot count, not the weight or quantity limit of each individual stack.
| Magic Chest | Capacity | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Small Magic Chest | 24 slots | Reference material describes an approximately 100-meter circular workshop area; verify current behavior in-game. |
| Medium Magic Chest | 32 slots | Use the current build’s interaction and range behavior when planning placement. |
| Large Magic Chest | 40 slots | Capacity is larger than Medium; the cited reference does not establish a universal range value. |
| Huge Magic Chest | 56 slots | Capacity only; no fixed range value is established in the cited material. |
| Enormous Magic Chest | 72 slots | Listed as the highest-capacity tier; base-wide Flame Altar use should be confirmed on your build. |
If you are changing tiers solely to gain slots, use the in-place upgrade rather than moving the inventory. If you are changing the base layout, choose the tier first and then perform the empty-first relocation.
Use Quick Stack to finish the cleanup
The official Forging the Path notes describe a Quick Stack Station that automatically deposits stackable items from your backpack into nearby Magic Chests. Magic Chests can be toggled to accept or deny this automatic depositing.
Quick Stack workflow
- Complete the physical move and return the items to your backpack or temporary chest as needed.
- Place or use a Quick Stack Station near the destination Magic Chests.
- Enable automatic depositing on the Magic Chests that should receive Quick Stack items.
- Disable the setting on chests that must remain dedicated to a category or reserve stock.
- Run the station and inspect the destination chests afterward. Quick Stack handles stackable backpack items; it is not a substitute for checking unique, non-stackable, or intentionally separated items.
Quick Stack is most useful after a large relocation because it reduces repetitive depositing. It does not change the rule for picking up the chest itself: empty the chest before physical relocation.

Common mistakes and recovery steps
Picking up before emptying
Risk: The cited notes do not guarantee inventory preservation for every filled-chest pickup case. The anti-destruction rule is protective, not a relocation guarantee.
Recovery: If the game refuses the action, leave the chest in place, transfer its contents, and try again only when it is empty. If the chest was moved and the inventory is not visible, stop making further changes and check the original position, your backpack, and every temporary container before crafting or dismantling anything else.
Rank #3
Using the wrong operation
Symptom: You are carrying stacks out of a chest even though you only wanted more slots or Magic functionality.
Fix: Cancel the transfer and reopen the chest’s interaction menu. Select the documented in-place upgrade or conversion action instead of pickup.
Leaving a stack behind
Symptom: The replacement chest appears to contain everything except one material or partial stack.
Fix: Reopen the old and temporary containers, inspect every inventory page, and compare partial stacks individually. Do not dismantle the old chest until this audit is complete.
Workshop cannot see materials
Symptom: A recipe no longer recognizes an item after the chest was moved.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: Test the chest from the workshop, move it closer, and verify the current build’s range behavior. The inventory can be intact while the chest is outside the workshop’s effective coverage.
Quick Stack puts items in an unexpected chest
Symptom: Stackable backpack items are deposited into a nearby Magic Chest you intended to reserve.
Fix: Toggle that chest to deny automatic depositing, then manually sort the affected stacks. Use enabled chests only for categories that can safely receive automatic deposits.
Final safety checklist
- Use in-place conversion for ordinary storage to Magic Chest.
- Use in-place upgrading for a larger tier.
- For a physical move, prepare a temporary chest or enough backpack capacity first.
- Transfer every stack and verify the source chest is empty before pickup.
- Place the chest, reopen it, and restore the contents before removing temporary storage.
- Test a workshop recipe from the new location.
- Confirm current range behavior rather than assuming a future build will use the same coverage.
- Use Quick Stack Station for stackable backpack items, with automatic depositing enabled only on the chests that should receive them.
The reliable distinction is simple: upgrades and Magic conversion preserve contents in place; physical relocation requires an empty-first transfer. Following that distinction avoids relying on behavior that the cited notes do not universally guarantee.
