You cannot import a character from the original PC version of Oblivion into Oblivion Remastered. Bethesda says the classic game’s save and progression files are unsupported, so copying an old .ess file into the Remastered folder will not convert it. Keep the original installation and its saves, back them up, and start a new Remastered character. The practical cross-installation move is between Remastered versions, such as Xbox Game Pass for PC to Steam, using a community transfer utility.
What can and cannot be moved
There are two different games and two different save systems involved. The 2006 PC release is usually called classic or original Oblivion. The newer Unreal Engine release is Oblivion Remastered. Their folders may both sit below DocumentsMy Games, but the save formats are not interchangeable.

The folders are different because the games use different data structures. A file having the same character name, extension, or apparent timestamp does not make it readable by the other game. Treat “move my old save” as “preserve the old character and begin again in Remastered,” not as a conversion project.
Why dragging an old .ess file fails
Classic Oblivion saves contain state created by the original game, its executable, and its plugin environment. Remastered does not provide a Bethesda-supported importer for that state. The official support position is that original Oblivion save/progression files are not supported by Remastered.

Do not paste the classic Saves folder into Oblivion RemasteredSavedSaveGames, rename files, or try to force a load through a mod manager. Those actions do not translate the underlying data and can make it harder to tell which files belong to which game. Leave the classic files in their original location and work only on copies when experimenting.
Back up the classic game before changing anything
A backup protects the character, screenshots, and modded playthrough even though it cannot make that character load in Remastered. Bethesda’s migration documentation describes copying the classic save folder for another classic installation; it does not describe conversion to Remastered.
- Close classic Oblivion, Remastered, Steam, the Xbox App, and any mod manager that might be deploying files.
- Open
C:Users<username>DocumentsMy GamesOblivionSaves. If Windows redirects Documents to OneDrive, use the equivalent OneDrive Documents location shown in Bethesda Support’s save-path guidance. - Copy the entire
Savesfolder, including every slot, autosave, and backup file, to a dated folder on another drive or a removable USB flash drive. - Keep the original folder untouched. Give the copy a clear name such as
Oblivion-classic-saves-2026-10-20and record whether the playthrough used mods. - Keep the classic game installation and its mod profile available if you still want to play that character. Do not remove a plugin or overwrite a profile while trying to prepare Remastered.
Copy-only backups are reversible: if a test damages a working copy, discard that copy and make a fresh one from the untouched original. A USB flash drive for backing up game saves is sufficient; the important property is a second location, not a particular brand or capacity.
Find the Remastered save folder
Remastered normally creates its save directory after the first successful launch and save. The documented PC location is:

Steam and the Xbox App for PC use this Remastered folder structure. If Windows has redirected Documents to OneDrive, look under the corresponding OneDrive Documents path rather than creating a second, disconnected Documents tree. Bethesda’s cloud-save guidance explains how to identify that redirected location.
Create the destination safely
- Launch Remastered from the platform on which you intend to play.
- Start a test character and make one manual save. Exit to the desktop.
- Open the Remastered
SaveGamesfolder and confirm that the test save appears. - Do not copy classic
.essfiles into this directory. The test save only confirms that Remastered is writing to the expected location.
If a newly created manual save disappears, try a simple character name containing ordinary letters and numbers. Bethesda documents failures associated with unexpected characters such as spaces, ampersands, or slashes; autosaves may continue to work in that situation. This issue is separate from classic-save incompatibility.

A community utility exists for the specific one-way route from the Xbox App/Game Pass PC edition of Remastered to the Steam edition. The Oblivion Remastered Save Transfer Tool from HIDDENLOTUSTECH was version 0.1.1 and was last updated 9 May 2025. It is not a Bethesda product, and its availability or behavior can change.

Prepare both installations
- Install or verify Remastered on Steam and on the Xbox App for PC, using the same Windows account that owns the source save.
- Launch the Steam edition once and create one native Steam save. The utility’s instructions recommend this so the destination profile and folder already exist.
- Close both games before selecting files. Do not let two launchers or cloud-sync processes write to the same destination while the transfer is running.
- Make a separate copy of the Xbox-App save folder before using any third-party utility.
Run the transfer
- Open the transfer tool and select the Xbox App/Game Pass Remastered save as the source.
- Select the Steam Remastered installation or destination it identifies.
- Start the transfer. The tool says it copies the source rather than deleting or overwriting it and offers optional backups.
- Review the generated filename before accepting it. If the utility displays a name that does not match the character or slot you intended, stop and choose the correct source.
- Launch the Steam edition and load the newly generated save. Make a fresh Steam save in a new slot before replacing or deleting anything.
The tool notes that version differences or mods can make a save incompatible. A successful file copy is not a guarantee that every script, inventory item, or mod-dependent quest will behave identically. Keep the original Xbox-App save until the Steam copy has loaded and you have confirmed that the character is usable.
What this utility does not do
- It does not convert a classic 2006 Oblivion save.
- It is not a general cross-platform sync service.
- It does not make unsupported mods compatible with Steam.
- It does not establish an official Bethesda-supported migration path; it is a community Windows utility.
Understand platform and cloud-save limits
Bethesda states that Oblivion Remastered does not support cross-save between different platforms. Xbox Play Anywhere can synchronize saves between an Xbox console and the Xbox App for PC, but that entitlement does not extend the same sync to Steam.

When a platform’s cloud service restores a file, it may place that file back into the platform’s own save directory. That does not change the format boundary between classic Oblivion and Remastered, and it does not turn a Steam save into an Xbox Play Anywhere save.
Move mods by rebuilding a Remastered profile
Mods are a separate migration problem. Bethesda’s official statement is direct: “Mods are not officially supported for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.” A classic plugin that worked for years in the original game is not automatically safe in Remastered merely because its filename is the same.

Inventory the classic setup
- Export or write down the classic mod list, load order, archive names, required versions, and any external tools used by the old profile.
- Keep the classic profile in a separate mod-manager profile or installation. It is your recovery path for the original character.
- Mark mods that alter saves, scripts, configuration files, shaders, or external processes; these are especially unlikely to be portable by copying files alone.
Check for a Remastered port
For each mod, look for a release explicitly made for Remastered or a compatibility statement from its author. A classic .esp or .esm is not proof of compatibility. Prefer a clean Remastered profile and add only versions whose archive layout and requirements match the Remastered release.
What the Vortex extension can deploy
The community Vortex extension was version 0.1.8 and was last updated 2 July 2025. It can detect Steam and Xbox installations and supports several Remastered layouts when an archive is structured correctly:

The extension does not officially manage reshades, save or configuration edits, or mods that require other external tools. Installing the extension therefore does not make every item in a classic load order manageable or safe.

Use an incremental rebuild
- Create a clean Remastered profile with no mods.
- Add one Remastered-compatible mod and launch the game.
- Load or create a test character, make a new save, quit, and relaunch to check that the save remains visible.
- Only after that test, add the next mod. Record the order and version so the last change can be removed if a problem appears.
- Keep the clean profile available for diagnosis. Never use the only copy of a valuable save while testing an unverified package.
Bethesda recommends uninstalling mods and verifying game files through Steam or the Xbox App when modded gameplay fails. Verification can restore altered installation files, but it cannot repair a classic save that Remastered does not support.

Troubleshoot the common failure cases
The old character is missing from Remastered
This is expected for a classic save. Confirm that you are looking at the Remastered folder and not the classic folder, then restore the backup to the classic game if you want to continue that character. There is no Bethesda-supported conversion step to add.
The transfer tool cannot find the Game Pass save
- Launch the Xbox App edition and make a new native save, then close the game.
- Check that Windows has not redirected Documents into OneDrive and that the tool is pointed at the actual Xbox-App save location.
- Confirm that you selected a Remastered save, not a classic Oblivion file.
- Make sure the Steam edition has already created at least one destination save.
If the utility still cannot identify the file, do not delete or rename the source folder. Preserve the backup and consult the utility’s current documentation for its supported folder detection.
The Steam copy loads but behaves incorrectly
Keep the original Xbox-App save untouched. Version differences and mods are documented causes of incompatibility. Remove or disable nonessential Remastered mods, load the transferred save in a clean profile, and create a new test slot. If only the modded profile fails, rebuild it one package at a time rather than repeatedly overwriting the transferred file.

Use a simple character name without spaces, ampersands, slashes, or other unexpected characters, then save again. Bethesda documents this naming-related failure and notes that autosaves may still function. If the problem persists, test in a clean profile and verify the game files through the launcher.
The game crashes after installing a mod
- Disable the most recently added mod and test the clean profile.
- If the crash remains, remove the remaining third-party files or use the launcher’s file-verification function.
- Check that the package was made for Remastered and that any required UE4SS, Lua, Blueprint, or external-tool dependency is installed exactly as its author specifies.
- Restore the last known-good save rather than repeatedly loading a slot created after the crash began.
A safe decision checklist
- Want the original character? Keep classic Oblivion, its old mod profile, and a separate copy of the classic
Savesfolder. - Want to play Remastered? Create a new Remastered character; do not paste classic files into its
SaveGamesdirectory. - Moving Game Pass PC to Steam? Make a native Steam save first, use the community transfer tool on a copy, review the generated filename, and retain the source.
- Moving mods? Rebuild from Remastered-specific releases, one at a time, with a clean profile available.
- Changing platforms? Assume no automatic cross-save unless the source and destination are Xbox console plus Xbox App for PC under Xbox Play Anywhere.
The safest arrangement is two independent profiles: an untouched classic installation for the old character and a separately managed Remastered installation for new saves and explicitly ported mods. That preserves what already works without pretending that incompatible save formats or unsupported mods can be converted by moving folders.
