You can move a Gemini Gem’s reusable instructions into Skills in two different ways: use Google’s account-dependent Gems-to-Skills transition when it is available, or rebuild the workflow as a Codex/OpenAI skill. Google says its automatic transition preserves a Gem’s name, description, custom instructions, and uploaded knowledge files. That does not make Gemini-specific tools, integrations, or behavior portable to Codex, so review and adapt the result before relying on it.

Choose where the workflow needs to run

Use Google’s converted Skill if the workflow should continue in Gemini. Rebuild it as a Codex/OpenAI skill if it needs to run in that environment. The two formats package reusable instructions, but their tools, access controls, and runtime behavior are not interchangeable.

  • Where it runs: Gemini app or Codex/OpenAI environment.
  • Tools it needs: Gemini or Workspace features versus tools actually configured in the destination.
  • Reference material: migrated or uploaded knowledge versus files bundled alongside and referenced from SKILL.md.
  • Access and upkeep: account or workspace sharing, who can use the skill, how often its files change, and who maintains them.

These are practical comparison points, not a vendor-published performance comparison. Google’s current Skills Help and OpenAI’s skill documentation describe their respective formats and availability.

Inventory what each Gem contains

Before changing anything, make a record for each Gem. A Gem is more than its prompt: it can include reference material and assumptions about connected apps or how Gemini should respond. Google’s Gems Help covers instructions, knowledge files, Drive use, and sharing.

  • Name and short purpose or description.
  • Full custom instructions, including required inputs, process, output format, and boundaries.
  • Knowledge files, noting which are uploaded and which are Drive references or other links.
  • Gem users and sharing needs.
  • Gemini-specific commands, app connections, and response features the workflow expects.

This inventory gives you a way to check a Google conversion and a reliable source for rebuilding the workflow elsewhere.

Check for Google’s automatic transition

Google describes an automatic transition from Gems to Skills and says the converted Skill retains the Gem’s name, description, custom instructions, and uploaded knowledge files. Availability, controls, and access can vary by account and surface, so follow the transition instructions shown in your own Gemini account rather than relying on a universal button sequence.

  1. Open Gemini’s current Skills area and check whether the Gems transition is offered for your account.
  2. If a Gem has converted, compare its name, description, instructions, and uploaded files against your inventory.
  3. Check that linked or Drive-based material and any expected app behavior still work as intended; do not assume they transferred just because uploaded files did.
  4. If the control is unavailable or expected content is missing, consult Google’s transition guide and the current Skills Help for available authoring or upload options.

Google’s Skills Help describes availability through the Gemini mobile app, Gemini app on Mac, and Gemini web app, as well as a gradual rollout and personal-account requirements. Eligibility and rollout details may change; check the live Help page and the account where you intend to use the Skill. Google Workspace’s transition guide addresses an administrative context and may not describe the same audience or controls.

Rebuild a Gem as a Codex or OpenAI skill

For Codex/OpenAI, create a focused directory for each reusable workflow. Its required SKILL.md starts with YAML front matter containing a name and description, followed by the instructions. For example:

---
name: editorial-brief
description: Create a sourced editorial brief from an approved topic and source pack.
---

Keep the YAML valid: the description line begins at the left margin, with no leading indentation. Use the Markdown body to explain when the skill applies, what inputs it needs, the steps to follow, the expected output, quality checks, and when to ask for missing information or stop. OpenAI’s API skill guide and skill authoring documentation describe the structure and use of supporting resources.

Put stable references, templates, examples, and scripts in clearly named supporting folders such as references/, assets/, or scripts/, then tell the skill when to consult them. Do not leave important reference files beside the skill without linking them from its instructions.

Map Gem content to the destination

Gem element Google’s Skills transition Codex/OpenAI adaptation
Name Google says the converted Skill retains it. Use a short, descriptive name in SKILL.md front matter.
Description or purpose Google says it carries over. Write a precise trigger description: what task the skill handles and when it applies.
Custom instructions Google says they carry over. Turn them into an ordered workflow with inputs, outputs, constraints, and checks.
Uploaded knowledge files Google says they are retained in converted Skills. Bundle them as references or assets and instruct the skill when to use them.
Drive or app-specific behavior Verify the converted content and behavior for the account. Configure an actual destination tool, or make the required content a user-provided input; do not assume the integration moved.
Sharing and access Check Google’s current sharing and transition behavior. Set access for the specific destination workspace and review the files before sharing.

Rewrite platform-specific steps instead of copying them

Preserve the outcome and decision rules, but replace mechanics tied to Gemini. For example, an instruction to “search Drive with Gemini” only belongs in a Codex skill if the destination has an equivalent configured tool. Otherwise, specify that the user must provide the relevant file or content, or state that the action is unavailable.

If one Gem covers several independent tasks, consider splitting it into smaller skills with distinct triggers and success criteria. A narrower description makes it clearer when a skill applies. Google says Skills can be combined for more complex work; OpenAI’s skill authoring guidance identifies the name and description as important discovery cues. Neither means a skill can access an integration that has not been configured.

Test the adapted workflow

Validate the skill with representative requests before depending on it. This is operational advice based on how skills are described and structured; it is not a reported migration test result.

  1. Try a normal request with all required inputs.
  2. Try a request with an important input missing and check that the skill asks for it or follows its stated fallback.
  3. Try an edge case that tests a boundary, output requirement, or tool assumption.
  4. Check whether the skill is selected when relevant, follows its steps, uses its references, and produces the expected format.
  5. If it is missed or activated too broadly, refine the description; if execution is inconsistent, make the workflow steps and checks more explicit.

Review private material and sharing

Before uploading or sharing a converted or rebuilt skill, inspect its instructions and knowledge files for customer data, private examples, internal procedures, or credentials. Remove secrets and confirm the destination’s sharing settings. Google documents Gem sharing in its Gems Help; access to an OpenAI/Codex skill depends on the workspace and configuration where it is used.
