You can transfer many important items—including camera photos and videos, contacts, SMS and message history, and WhatsApp messages and media—from Android to iPhone with Apple’s Move to iOS process. Start it during iPhone setup, check that the selected content fits, and keep both phones powered and idle until the iPhone says the transfer is complete. Verify your important data on the iPhone before you erase or trade in your Android phone.
Choose the transfer path that fits your iPhone
Apple’s guided transfer is designed for initial iPhone setup. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, Apple says you must erase it and start setup again to use that flow. Erasing removes data on the iPhone, so first confirm it contains nothing you need to keep; otherwise, move content manually.

Prepare both phones before starting
- Turn on Wi-Fi and connect both phones to power, or make sure they have enough charge to stay on throughout the transfer.
- Check the iPhone’s available storage against the content you plan to select. Include content on an external Micro SD card in your estimate.
- Keep the phones near each other. If using a cable, confirm the connection supports data and that the phone ports are compatible.
- Decide whether you want photos and calendar data imported into Apple apps or prefer to keep accessing Google Photos and Google Calendar after signing in.
Transfer your data during iPhone setup
- On the iPhone: proceed through setup to Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From Android, then select Transfer with App. For the compatible no-app option, choose Transfer without App instead.
- On Android: open Apple’s Move to iOS app, follow its prompts, and enter the one-time code shown on the iPhone.
- When prompted, join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone. If using a supported USB-C connection, connect the phones as directed on screen.
- Select the categories you want to transfer. Apple lists contacts, message history and SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars among the supported content.
- Leave both devices close together and connected to power. Keep Move to iOS open on Android, do not answer a call or switch to another app, and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar to finish. The Android screen may report completion first; use the iPhone’s completion indicator.
Choose where photos, contacts, and calendars should live
Photos and videos
Select the photo and video categories if you want the camera library copied into Apple Photos. If you prefer to keep using Google Photos, Google’s checklist says to uncheck Apple Photos during transfer and access Google Photos after signing in on the iPhone. These are different approaches: importing creates a copy in the Apple photo library, while signing in lets you continue using Google’s service.

Contacts
Select Contacts in the transfer flow, then inspect names and important fields on the iPhone. If your contacts are stored in Google and you want them to remain available through that account, Google provides separate instructions for syncing Google Contacts with iPhone from its transfer checklist.
Google Calendar
If you want to continue using Google Calendar rather than import calendar data into Apple Calendar, Google advises unchecking Apple Calendar during transfer and signing in to Google on the iPhone.

Move WhatsApp and understand what needs extra work
Apple includes WhatsApp messages and media among the transfer categories. Select that content during the guided process, then open WhatsApp on the iPhone and check that the chats and media you care about are present before retiring the Android phone. Apple’s cited instructions do not spell out a detailed WhatsApp eligibility checklist, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than assuming every account or setup will behave identically.
Not everything moves automatically. Apple says music, books, and PDFs must be moved manually. Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both stores and support the transfer feature, but you may need to download those apps again from the App Store. Do not assume that every Android app, its data, or every type of media will migrate.

Check the iPhone before erasing or giving away Android
- Open Photos and inspect key camera photos, videos, and albums, or sign in to Google Photos if that is your chosen library.
- Check Contacts, including important names and fields.
- Review message history and open WhatsApp to inspect important chats and media.
- Check any other transferred data you rely on, such as calendars, files, or call history.
Keep the Android phone intact until these checks are complete. A transfer screen reaching the end is not a substitute for confirming that the content you need is accessible on the new phone.

The transfer stops or content seems missing
- Keep Move to iOS visible on Android; leaving the app, answering a call, or using another app before completion can interrupt the process.
- Disable Android settings that may interfere with Wi-Fi. Apple names Sprint Connections Optimizer and Smart Network Switch as examples.
- Restart both phones, turn off cellular data on Android, and retry the transfer.
- Wait for the iPhone loading bar to finish even if Android says the transfer is complete.
The iPhone runs out of space
If the iPhone fills up or appears full before the transfer completes, Apple’s guidance is to erase the iPhone and repeat the transfer after confirming that the selected Android content fits its available storage. Before erasing, make sure there is no iPhone data you need to preserve.

Phone number or SIM activation is unfinished
Apple says a phone number may be activated during the move, but the carrier may require you to finish activation on its website. Whether this applies depends on the carrier and device.
