To move files from a Mac to a Windows laptop, copy them with OneDrive, an external drive, or a local network share. Apps need a separate process: install each app’s Windows version, then use its publisher’s instructions to sign in, restore its license, and import any app-specific data. A Mac app bundle cannot simply be copied to Windows and run.
Choose a file-transfer method
The right route depends on how much data you have, whether you have reliable internet or suitable storage, and how much setup you want to do.
| Method | Internet required? | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive | Yes | You want to access files through the cloud and have enough storage | Upload and download time depend on your connection and available capacity. |
| External storage | No | You already have a compatible drive, have a large collection, or want an offline copy | The drive must work with both computers and have enough free space. |
| Local network sharing (SMB) | No internet upload required; both computers need the same local network | You want to copy files directly between computers without cloud storage or removable media | It takes more setup and requires care with account access. |
Transfer time is not fixed: it depends on the amount of data, drive and port speeds, network conditions, and internet upload and download speeds.
Option 1: Copy files with OneDrive
- On the Mac, sign in to OneDrive with the Microsoft account you will use on the Windows laptop.
- Copy the files you want to move into your OneDrive folder and let them finish syncing. Microsoft says OneDrive can accept uploads from a Mac and sync files to a Mac or PC.
- On the Windows laptop, sign in to OneDrive with the same account. Find the files in File Explorer or through the OneDrive taskbar icon.
- Open a few files on the laptop to confirm they are available and usable.
Microsoft’s support pages accessed in 2026 list 5 GB of OneDrive storage with a Microsoft account and 1 TB with a Microsoft 365 subscription. Check the current terms for your market and subscription before relying on either allowance. If your files exceed your available space, choose another route or transfer a smaller selection.

Option 2: Transfer files with an external drive
- Check that the drive has enough free space for the files you plan to copy. A USB flash drive may suit a smaller collection; an external hard drive or SSD may be more practical for a larger one.
- Check the drive’s format before using it on both computers. Apple identifies ExFAT as Windows-compatible and recommends it for disks larger than 32 GB. For disks 32 GB or smaller, Apple lists MS-DOS (FAT).
- If the drive needs reformatting, first copy any files you want to keep somewhere else. Apple warns: “Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it.”
- Connect the drive to the Mac, copy the files onto it, then safely eject it.
- Connect it to the Windows laptop and copy the files into the folders where you want them. Browse those destination folders and check that the files arrived.
If you already own a drive that works with both systems and has enough room, you do not need to buy another. For Microsoft’s steps, see Move your files to a new Windows PC.

Option 3: Copy files over your local network
SMB file sharing lets the Windows laptop access selected files on the Mac over a shared local network. Use this if you are comfortable changing sharing settings and want to avoid uploading files to cloud storage or carrying a drive between computers.
- On the Mac, open System Settings and go to General > Sharing. Turn on File Sharing.
- In the File Sharing settings, open the options for sharing files and folders using SMB. Select the account that Windows will be allowed to use and follow the prompts to set its sharing access.
- Note the Mac’s network address and the selected account’s credentials.
- On Windows, connect to the Mac using that network address and sign in with the account credentials. Copy the files you need to the laptop.
- When the transfer is complete, turn off sharing or remove the Windows-sharing access you enabled.
Menu labels can vary by macOS version. Follow Apple’s file-sharing instructions for the version on your Mac. Apple cautions that account passwords used for Windows sharing may be stored less securely, so do not leave an unnecessary sharing account enabled.

Install Windows apps and handle their data separately
Migration Assistant is not a Mac-to-Windows app-transfer tool. Apple describes it for transfers to a Mac, including Mac-to-Mac and Windows-PC-to-Mac moves—not for moving Mac apps to Windows. See Apple’s guides to moving content to a new Mac and transferring information to a Mac.
For each app you rely on, separate the program from the information it works with:

- Check whether the app’s publisher offers a Windows edition.
- Install that edition from the publisher or an appropriate trusted store.
- Follow the publisher’s directions to sign in and restore or reactivate your license.
- Use the publisher’s export, import, or sync instructions to bring over the app’s data, if supported.
Do not assume that preferences, plugins, fonts, licenses, or app libraries transfer automatically. Some Mac apps have no Windows edition, and the steps for moving their data depend on the specific app.
Check filenames and verify the copied files
A copy to Windows may stop if a filename contains characters Windows does not permit: < > : " / | ? *. If a transfer stops, check the affected filenames, rename incompatible ones on the Mac, and try copying again. Files whose names begin with a period are hidden in macOS and may appear on Windows. Mac metadata files are usually not needed for ordinary document transfers; leave them alone unless you have a specific reason to handle them. Apple explains these cross-platform filename considerations in its file-sharing guidance.

- Browse the destination folders and confirm that the expected files are present.
- Open representative documents, photos, and archives on the Windows laptop.
- For app data, open the Windows app and check that its import or sync completed as expected.
