To move browser bookmarks into a save-it-later app, export them from your browser as an HTML file, keep that file as a backup, then import it only if the destination app supports browser bookmark HTML. After importing, check the results before deleting or reorganizing anything in the original browser.
Can you import browser bookmarks into a save-it-later app?
Sometimes. A browser’s ability to export bookmarks does not mean every reading app can import that file. Chrome documents exporting bookmarks as an HTML file for use elsewhere, and Mozilla documents HTML export from Firefox for backup or transfer. Whether a destination app accepts the file—and whether it preserves folders, tags, notes, or dates—depends on that app’s current import features.
Also distinguish two jobs: a bookmark manager organizes links, while a read-it-later app is designed to save web content into a reading queue. Some services may do both, but choose based on what you want to do with your saved items.
Export bookmarks from your browser
- Open the browser that currently contains the bookmarks. Go to its bookmark manager or library and look for an Export option. Menu names and locations vary by browser and version.
- Export as HTML if the browser offers it. In Chrome, follow Google’s bookmark export instructions. For Firefox, follow Mozilla’s HTML export instructions.
- Keep the exported file. Save a backup copy somewhere you can find it. Treat it as a fallback until you have confirmed the imported library is complete enough for your needs.
Check the app before importing
Open the destination app’s current help or import page and confirm it accepts browser bookmark HTML. Check whether its instructions explain how it handles folders and any other metadata you care about. Do not assume that a folder structure, tags, notes, or saved dates will transfer just because the links do.

If you want a general bookmark manager
Raindrop.io describes organizing bookmarks with collections, tags, and notes. Its documentation and backup article discuss bookmark formats and backups, but those details do not establish that every current third-party browser HTML export will import with all fields intact. Import and verify the bookmarks
- Use the destination app’s documented import flow to select the exported HTML file. If the app does not accept that format, do not rename the file or assume it can convert it; check the app’s supported formats and options.
- Open several imported items, including examples from different folders if you had them. Check that the links work and that the organization appears as expected.
- If the app provides an item count, compare it with the source library or export where practical. Inspect any fields you specifically need, such as tags or notes.
- Keep the original browser bookmarks and the export file until you are satisfied with the destination library. Then decide whether you still need the browser copies.
What to do if the import does not work as expected
- The app does not show an HTML import option: Check its current documentation for supported formats or a different import route. Browser export support alone cannot guarantee compatibility.
- Links arrive but folders or details do not: Confirm what the app says it retains. Reorganize items in the destination only after preserving the original export.
- Some bookmarks seem to be missing: Reopen the browser’s bookmark manager and compare against the export or available counts. Keep the source intact while you investigate.
- You are moving to a reading app rather than a bookmark manager: Check whether it saves pages for later and whether it offers a supported way to bring in existing links; do not assume browser HTML import is available.
