To move Bitcoin (BTC) from an exchange to a hardware wallet, generate a Bitcoin receive address in the wallet’s app, verify the full address on the device itself, select the native Bitcoin network at the exchange, and send a small test transaction before moving the rest. Keep your recovery backup offline and retain the transaction ID so you can monitor confirmations.
The transfer is controlled by the exchange until it broadcasts the withdrawal. After broadcast, Bitcoin transactions cannot normally be reversed, so checking the asset, address, network, amount and fee before approval is essential.
What you are actually doing
An exchange account is an online service that holds or controls withdrawal keys on your behalf. A hardware wallet is a physical device that keeps the wallet’s signing capability separated from your computer or phone. Moving BTC means requesting a withdrawal from the exchange to a Bitcoin address generated by the hardware-wallet account.

Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible after broadcast. An exchange may be able to cancel a request while it is still pending internally, but a confirmed transaction cannot be recalled by the wallet manufacturer or a block explorer. Treat every withdrawal as a permanent payment to the exact address and network you approve.
What you need before starting
- A hardware wallet initialized according to its manufacturer’s current instructions.
- The matching desktop or mobile wallet application, such as Trezor Suite or Ledger Wallet.
- Access to the exchange account, its security-authentication method and any required withdrawal permissions.
- A private place to record the wallet’s recovery backup offline.
- Enough BTC to cover the exchange’s withdrawal charge and the amount you intend to send.
Buy the device from a trustworthy source and inspect its packaging and setup prompts. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure if the device arrives initialized, displays a recovery backup you did not create, or otherwise looks tampered with. Do not import a recovery backup supplied by a seller or another person.
Step 1: Initialize the hardware wallet and secure its backup
Set up the device using the manufacturer’s current instructions. When the setup offers a choice, create a new wallet on the hardware device so the recovery backup is generated in the device’s intended offline workflow. Trezor’s moving guidance recommends creating a new wallet on the hardware device, sending a small test transaction, waiting for confirmation and then transferring the remaining funds.

Write the recovery backup exactly as the device displays it, using the manufacturer’s recommended material and order. Store it offline in a place protected from fire, theft, moisture and unauthorized access. The backup is what restores the wallet if the device is lost or damaged; anyone who obtains it can generally control the funds.
- Never photograph or scan the backup.
- Do not put it in cloud notes, email, a password manager or a document on an internet-connected computer.
- Never type it into an exchange, website, support chat, form or browser extension.
- Do not share it with someone claiming to be exchange or wallet support.
There is no single recovery-backup format that applies to every hardware-wallet product. Use the exact backup and recovery instructions supplied for your device rather than assuming another wallet’s procedure is interchangeable.
Step 2: Generate a Bitcoin receive address
Open the wallet application, select the Bitcoin account and choose Receive. The software will display a Bitcoin address. Hardware wallets can offer a fresh address for each receipt; use a fresh address when the application provides one and when it fits your record-keeping needs.
Verify the complete address on the physical device
- Copy or scan the address shown in the wallet application.
- Choose the application’s option to show, verify or display the address on the hardware wallet.
- Compare the complete address on the device screen with the address in the application and with the address you will paste into the exchange.
- Approve the address only when every character and the network indicator agree.
The device screen is the trusted checkpoint. Malware can replace an address in a computer’s clipboard or alter what the software displays. If the physical device shows a different address, stop. Do not send funds until you regenerate or recopy the address and complete verification again.

Confirm the asset is Bitcoin
Make sure the account is for Bitcoin (BTC), not Bitcoin Cash or another asset. Trezor warns against sending an asset to an address generated for a different cryptocurrency. A string that looks like an address is not sufficient proof that it is valid for the asset selected at the exchange.
Keep the verified address available while you open the exchange withdrawal form. Avoid copying an address from an old message, screenshot or previous transaction when the wallet can generate and verify a current one.

Step 3: Start the withdrawal at the exchange
Exchange interfaces use labels such as Send, Withdraw or Transfer. Open that function, choose BTC and paste the verified hardware-wallet address. Coinbase, Binance and Kraken may place these controls in different menus, and their labels can change, but the checks are the same.
Select the native Bitcoin network
For a normal BTC withdrawal to a Bitcoin hardware-wallet account, select the Bitcoin network. Ledger’s Coinbase guidance expresses the rule as “BTC → Bitcoin network.” Trezor similarly warns that withdrawing Bitcoin through a network other than Bitcoin is not real Bitcoin for this purpose and can result in loss.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An exchange may show alternative networks because they appear faster or cheaper. Do not select one simply because its fee is lower or its estimated time is shorter. The network selected at the exchange must match the network supported by the receiving account. If the form asks you to choose an asset and a network separately, check both fields before continuing.
Review the withdrawal summary
Before submitting, read the exchange’s summary line by line:
- Asset: BTC.
- Destination: the address you verified on the hardware-wallet screen.
- Network: Bitcoin.
- Amount: the intended amount, including whether the exchange deducts its withdrawal charge from the amount sent.
- Fee: the exchange’s displayed withdrawal charge and any network-fee explanation.
- Recipient balance: the amount expected to arrive after deductions.
Complete the exchange’s requested email confirmation, authenticator, passkey or other security checks. These controls and any withdrawal hold are administered by the exchange and can change over time. Do not bypass a warning by switching to another network or entering a different address.
Step 4: Send a small test transaction
For a first transfer, a new device, a newly added withdrawal address or a large balance, send a small test amount first. Ledger explicitly advises sending a small amount and verifying that it arrived before sending larger amounts. The test is not a guarantee against every failure, but it catches many address, network and account-selection mistakes while the amount at risk is limited.
- Enter a small BTC amount that is large enough to be accepted by the exchange and visible after fees.
- Recheck the address on the hardware-wallet screen and the Bitcoin network in the exchange form.
- Submit the withdrawal and complete the exchange’s security verification.
- Save the withdrawal record and transaction ID if the exchange provides one.
- Open the hardware-wallet application and look for the incoming transaction.
The transaction may first appear as unconfirmed. Wait for at least one blockchain confirmation, or for the confirmation level required by the exchange or your own risk policy, before transferring the remainder. Trezor’s procedure likewise recommends waiting for confirmation after the test.
Step 5: Transfer the remaining BTC
After the test transaction appears and reaches the required confirmation state, create the full withdrawal. Do not assume that a saved exchange destination removes the need for checking.
- Open the exchange’s BTC withdrawal form again.
- Choose the same verified hardware-wallet account or paste the address again from the wallet application.
- Verify the full address on the physical device.
- Confirm that the network still says Bitcoin.
- Enter the amount and review the fee and expected received amount.
- Approve the exchange’s security prompts.
- Save the receipt and transaction ID.
If the balance is large or you remain uneasy, split the remainder into stages. Each additional transaction may incur another exchange charge, so compare that cost with the value of reducing the amount exposed to a single withdrawal error.

How to monitor the transfer
Use the transaction ID to follow the withdrawal in the exchange history, the hardware-wallet history or a reputable Bitcoin block explorer. The exchange record can show whether the withdrawal is still being processed internally or has been broadcast. The wallet and explorer can show whether the transaction has reached the network and how many confirmations it has.

Unconfirmed does not automatically mean failed
A broadcast transaction can remain unconfirmed until miners include it in a block. Trezor states that confirmation times vary with the fee set by the sender and how busy the network is. The exchange may require multiple confirmations before it labels the withdrawal complete, and Binance notes that the required number varies by wallet or exchange.
There is no single fee, confirmation count or completion time that applies to every exchange, jurisdiction or network condition. Use the live fee estimate, withdrawal status and confirmation requirement shown by the service you are using rather than relying on a universal number.
Fees, holds and exchange limits
A BTC withdrawal can involve an exchange withdrawal charge, a network fee, or both, depending on the exchange’s current policy and transaction conditions. The amount shown at submission is the relevant figure for that withdrawal; policies can change, and the exchange may calculate the charge differently from the fee ultimately visible in the Bitcoin transaction.
Exchanges can also impose minimum withdrawal amounts, daily or account-level limits, security reviews, address-whitelisting delays and temporary holds after a password, payment-method or authentication change. These are exchange controls, not hardware-wallet requirements. If a withdrawal is pending, first read the exchange’s status message and security notices before repeating the request.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The address in the app and on the device do not match
Do not submit the withdrawal. Close or cancel the exchange form, regenerate or recopy the receive address in the wallet application and verify the complete address on the hardware wallet again. If the mismatch persists, update or reopen the wallet application using the manufacturer’s documented process and investigate the computer or phone for clipboard-altering malware.
The wrong network was selected before submission
Stop and change the network to Bitcoin. Do not approve the withdrawal merely because the alternative network displays a lower fee or quicker estimate.
The wrong network was used and the withdrawal was submitted
Contact the exchange and the hardware-wallet vendor promptly, provide the withdrawal record and transaction ID, and explain the asset and network selected. Recovery is not guaranteed; the ability to recover depends on where the transaction was sent, whether the receiving service supports that network and whether the relevant keys can be used safely. Do not give anyone your recovery backup while seeking help.
The exchange withdrawal is pending
Check the exchange’s withdrawal history for a security hold, review status or missing verification. If a transaction ID exists, inspect it in a block explorer. If no transaction has been broadcast, the exchange is still controlling the request; if it has been broadcast, use the ID and wallet history to distinguish propagation or confirmation delay from an exchange-processing delay.

The wallet does not show the incoming BTC
Confirm that you opened the correct Bitcoin account and that the receive address belongs to it. Check the exchange record and transaction ID, then allow time for network propagation and confirmation. If the transaction is visible on the network but not in the application, follow the wallet manufacturer’s account-refresh or resynchronization guidance. Do not restore the wallet from an unknown backup or enter your recovery backup into a troubleshooting website.
The transfer is larger than you are comfortable with
Use another small test or divide the amount into several withdrawals. Recheck the address and network for each request. This can increase fees and administrative work, but it limits the loss if a single request contains an error.
Someone asks for the recovery backup
Stop communicating with that person and do not provide the backup. Legitimate exchange or hardware-wallet support should not need it to verify a transaction or unlock an account. Anyone with the backup may be able to restore and spend the wallet.
Operational security after the transfer
- Keep the recovery backup offline and separate from the hardware wallet when practical.
- Use the physical device to verify receive addresses and later spending details.
- Record the exchange receipt, transaction ID, amount and date for your own accounting.
- Keep the hardware-wallet firmware and companion application current according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but verify update prompts through official channels.
- Be suspicious of unsolicited “support” messages, recovery services and urgent requests to move funds.
- Do not publish your receive address together with information that reveals your holdings unless you deliberately accept the privacy trade-off.
How to evaluate a hardware wallet for Bitcoin storage
If you are choosing a device rather than using one you already own, compare the features that affect this withdrawal workflow rather than relying on an unsupported security ranking.
Bitcoin support and on-device verification
Confirm that the device and its software support Bitcoin and can display the complete receive address on the physical screen. Address verification is the critical control during an exchange withdrawal.
Backup and recovery workflow
Read how the manufacturer creates, verifies and restores the recovery backup. Prefer a process in which the backup is generated on the device and clearly explains offline storage and recovery testing.
Design and transparency claims
Some vendors make open-source or closed-source design claims. Treat those as attributes to investigate, not as proof of a particular security ranking. An independent test or audit would be needed for a comparative security conclusion.
Software and connection support
Check whether the companion application works on your desktop or mobile platform and whether the device connects by the method you can use reliably. A technically strong device is less useful if you cannot verify addresses or review transactions on your normal equipment.
Purchase authenticity and supply-chain trust
Use a legitimate sales channel and follow the manufacturer’s authenticity checks. Do not use a device that arrives with a prewritten recovery backup, an unexplained PIN or instructions to enter sensitive information on a website.
A compact pre-send checklist
- The hardware wallet was initialized by you using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- The recovery backup was recorded offline and has not been shared or entered online.
- The wallet application is open to the correct Bitcoin account.
- The receive address is shown and verified on the physical device.
- The exchange withdrawal asset is BTC.
- The selected network is Bitcoin.
- The amount, fee and expected received amount are correct.
- The test transaction has appeared and reached your required confirmation state, when performing a staged transfer.
- The withdrawal receipt and transaction ID will be saved.
Following this sequence makes the transfer a controlled checklist rather than a blind copy-and-paste operation. The decisive safeguards are verifying the address on the device, matching BTC with the native Bitcoin network, testing with a small amount and protecting the recovery backup.
