There is no safe, universal way to lift or move a micro data center. The equipment’s exact weight, center of gravity, pallet, route, and manufacturer-approved handling method determine the plan. Before delivery, get the model-specific instructions, confirm the building and route can support the unit and handling equipment, arrange qualified handlers, and agree who is responsible for unloading, installation, electrical work, and commissioning.

Use the sequence below as a planning framework—not as a substitute for the manual for your exact model. Vendor instructions and service requirements apply to the products they describe, not to micro data centers generally.

What to confirm before the carrier arrives

Identify the unit and its approved handling method

Record the manufacturer and model, shipping dimensions and weight, pallet arrangement, marked lifting points or center-of-gravity information, and whether the unit will arrive loaded. Request the current handling and installation manual, delivery plan, and site-preparation checklist. Confirm whether the equipment must remain upright and which lifting or moving equipment the manufacturer permits.

Do not infer a lifting method from the cabinet’s appearance or assume that instructions for another micro data center apply. For example, Eaton’s October 2023 iCube manual directs handlers to use a forklift or manual forklift for its heavy cabinets, keep them upright, balance the center of gravity, and limit cargo inclination to 10°. Eaton recommends at least two operators for the unpacking step described in that manual. These are iCube-specific instructions; follow the manual for your own model. Read Eaton’s iCube user manual.

Assign responsibilities in writing

Agree in advance who supplies the forklift, crane, or other approved handling equipment; controls unloading; removes packaging; secures or anchors the enclosure; connects external power and network services; and performs start-up and testing. Confirm who must be present and what site work must be complete before delivery. A courier may deliver a shipment without providing the rigging, installation, electrical connection, or commissioning services you need.

Responsibilities vary by supplier and delivery location. In its described service, AWS assigns transportation responsibility differently for continental US and non-CONUS deliveries. AWS says its team installs and tests its system, while the customer provides and connects external power, fiber, and emergency management cables and supplies qualified electricians for energization. Do not treat that allocation as a standard for other suppliers. Review AWS’s deployment and responsibility details.

How to check the site and the complete delivery route

Measure the route, not just the final footprint

Walk the entire path from the truck’s unloading point to the final location. Check that the carrier’s vehicle and lift equipment can reach the unloading area, then verify doorway and corridor clearances, turns, turning space, ramps, thresholds, slopes, overhead obstructions, and weather exposure. Include the pallet and handling equipment in your clearance and load calculations.

Confirm that floors, ramps, and the final pad can bear the unit and handling equipment without damage or unsafe movement. Identify a flat, firm staging area for unpacking and keep the route clear of people and obstacles. Eaton directs users to take its cabinet to open, flat, firm ground for the unpacking procedure described in its manual. That is not permission to unpack another model in the same way.

Complete the model’s site checklist before scheduling delivery

Check the manufacturer’s requirements for floor or pad construction, leveling, service clearances, environmental conditions, power, cable entry, grounding, and any required utilities. AWS says its service validates site conditions before installation and warns that unmet requirements can delay deployment. Its published figures below apply to the AWS modular data center service only; they are not generic micro data center specifications. See AWS’s site requirements.

AWS service requirement Published value or condition
Pad or surface 20 ft by 30 ft concrete pad or compacted gravel surface
Service clearance At least 8 ft around the footprint
Pad bearing capacity At least 50,000 lb without settling
Outdoor operating conditions Ambient temperature from -20°F to 127°F; relative humidity from 5% to 95%
Elevation Below 10,000 ft
Power for redundant feed configuration Dual 400/480 VAC, three-phase, 50/60 Hz, 175 A feeds; AWS says a single feed is possible with reduced redundancy

AWS’s article does not state a publication date for these service figures. Confirm the current requirements with the supplier before preparing a site or ordering utility work.

How to receive and inspect the shipment

Document condition before unpacking

Check the shipment for visible damage, disturbed seals, missing accessories, or differences from the packing list before removing packaging. Photograph any damage, note discrepancies, and report them promptly to the carrier and supplier using their receiving process. Preserve packaging and delivery records if the supplier or carrier asks you to do so.

Huawei’s FusionModule2000 guide instructs users to inspect the equipment and accessories and notify the carrier or manufacturer if damage or omissions are found. It also calls for securing equipment during transport and protecting it against shifting. Those directions are specific to the FusionModule2000 guide. Consult Huawei’s FusionModule2000 guide.

Unpack only with the specified equipment and sequence

Keep the unit stable while unpacking and use the tools, personnel, and sequence specified by its manual. Do not remove restraints or packaging in a way that could allow the cabinet to tip or shift. If the shipment appears unstable or damaged, stop and contact the supplier rather than attempting to correct it during the move.

How to move and position the cabinet

Use trained handlers and rated equipment

Clear the route, establish one person to direct the move, communicate the movement plan, and keep bystanders out of the handling zone. Use handling equipment rated for the load and approved for the unit and pallet configuration. A heavy-duty pallet jack may be suitable only when the pallet, load rating, route, floor conditions, and manufacturer-approved method all allow it; it is not a substitute for a forklift or crane when those are required.

Do not push or pull the cabinet, tilt it, lift it by installed module handles, or use consumer moving equipment unless the product manual and qualified handling plan explicitly permit the method. Keep the unit upright where required. Stop if the cabinet shifts, the equipment behaves unexpectedly, or the route becomes obstructed.

Apply only the model-specific lifting limits

Huawei’s 2026 FusionModule2000 guide (Issue 11, dated May 7, 2026) specifies a forklift capacity of at least 1.5 times the equipment weight for moving that equipment; it also calls for balanced fork placement and securing the equipment to the forklift. Eaton’s iCube manual, by contrast, specifies a maximum cargo inclination of 10° for its transport procedure. These limits are not interchangeable: use the handling rules for the exact product being moved. Huawei FusionModule2000 guide and Eaton iCube user manual.

How to stabilize, ground, and fit out the enclosure

Secure the enclosure before loading it

Once positioned, follow the manufacturer’s directions for leveling and anchoring or otherwise securing the cabinet. Install anti-tip or other stability measures before loading equipment into a freestanding enclosure. Then follow the model’s instructions for doors and panels, cable paths, grounding or bonding, cooling, and any fire-protection or monitoring systems.

Panduit’s 2024 guide recommends a level, dry location with airflow and a ground connection, and advises using anti-tilt brackets and placing heavier equipment in lower rack units first. It also directs users to the original equipment maker’s instructions for mounting equipment. Treat those as planning guidance, not a replacement for your enclosure’s rated mounting and grounding instructions. Read Panduit’s guide.

Load equipment in a controlled order

Before installation, confirm that the rack is secured and that each device, rail, and mounting method is compatible with the enclosure. Install equipment according to the device and cabinet manufacturers’ instructions, accounting for weight distribution, cable routing, airflow, and access for service. Avoid blocking vents or placing heavy components high in an unsecured cabinet.

How to connect power and commission the system

Use qualified electricians for electrical work

Have qualified electricians make electrical connections and energize the system under the installation manual, applicable electrical and building codes, and the supplier’s start-up procedure. Confirm the required supply, protection, grounding, and any bypass or generator arrangement before connecting power. Never assume a power specification from a different product or service applies.

For AWS’s service, the customer supplies and connects external power and related cables, and qualified electricians perform energization; AWS says its team installs and tests the system components. Schneider Electric’s installation guide is explicitly scoped to named R-Series models, illustrating why product-specific instructions matter. Schneider Electric R-Series installation guide.

Test the functions that make the site operational

Use a written commissioning plan to check the functions included in the system and site design. Depending on the configuration, that may include UPS and bypass behavior, cooling and airflow, alarms and sensors, monitoring, network and fiber connections, grounding, and generator transfer. Record test results, open issues, responsible owners, and the conditions required for handover.

Schneider Electric’s preparation white paper advises confirming factory testing before delivery and validating at start-up that cooling, security, physical infrastructure monitoring, and management functions work as specified. Where a generator is connected, it recommends testing generator switching with the UPS. Read Schneider Electric’s site-preparation white paper.

AWS describes a typical installation for its service as taking 1–2 weeks depending on site conditions. That is an AWS service estimate, not a general schedule for other micro data centers. Agree a project schedule with your own supplier and account for site readiness and responsibility assignments.

What to include in the handover

Close the deployment with a record that lets facilities, IT, and operations teams support the system after the installers leave. Include:

  • Model and serial information, delivery condition, and any damage or parts discrepancies.
  • Final location, anchoring or securing status, grounding records, and relevant installation documents.
  • Power and network connections, circuit or feed identification, and the names of responsible contacts.
  • Commissioning checks completed, test results, unresolved issues, and any operating restrictions.
  • Supplier support details, maintenance responsibilities, and the manuals and as-built records handed to the owner.
