Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a visual-regression checkpoint and exclude only the timestamp element—not the whole area around it. A narrow ignore keeps the rest of the page under review; if you care about layout but not changing text, use a layout-oriented comparison and test timestamp correctness separately.
Choose what the test should detect
Start by deciding whether the test needs to catch changes to exact visual content, page structure, or the timestamp’s meaning. These are different checks:
- Exact appearance: Keep a strict or content-sensitive comparison, but ignore only the timestamp element.
- Structure and geometry: A layout-oriented comparison can focus on page layout despite changing content. Applitools describes its Layout match level for this use; it does not establish whether a particular timestamp string is correct. Applitools match-level documentation.
- Timestamp correctness: Add a functional or text assertion for the value’s format or semantics. If the visual test ignores the timestamp, that visual test cannot verify the ignored text.
Applitools’ support article describes Layout matching as an option for dynamic content, while its current product page says the service can automatically ignore dynamic data such as timestamps. The latter is a vendor claim, not an independent evaluation. Check the current SDK documentation and account terms before relying on a particular feature. Ignore the smallest stable timestamp target
- Inspect the page and identify the DOM element that contains the timestamp. Prefer a stable test identifier, semantic locator, or CSS selector over a screen coordinate.
- Configure the visual checkpoint to ignore that element. Keep nearby labels, spacing, and adjacent components in the comparison unless they are independently known to be dynamic.
- Run the comparison and review the proposed diff. Accept and update a baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
- If timestamp accuracy matters, add a separate assertion for the expected format or behavior rather than expecting the ignored visual region to validate it.
Applitools’ Playwright documentation shows locator-based ignored regions passed to eyes.check(), alongside match levels and other region controls. Use the syntax for the SDK version installed in your project. Applitools Eyes Playwright API.

Applitools Eyes with Playwright
Use a Playwright locator as the ignored region in the checkpoint. The documented API supports ignoreRegions; the exact surrounding setup depends on the version and configuration of your Eyes SDK. Consult the current API reference when adapting the example, and avoid replacing the narrow locator with a broad rectangle unless necessary. Eyes Playwright API reference.
Applitools also documents match levels, regions, floating regions, and displacement handling. Those options address different comparison needs; an ignored timestamp region is the direct choice when the specific element should not affect the visual result.

Chromatic
Chromatic documents three ways to mark content for visual-test ignoring: the .chromatic-ignore class, the data-chromatic="ignore" attribute, and configured ignoreSelectors. Choose the method that fits your component and test setup, and scope it to the timestamp. Chromatic: Ignoring elements.
Important geometry caveat: Chromatic says ignored pixels include the ignored element’s bounding box and position, but changes to the ignored element’s dimensions still trigger diffs. A timestamp container that expands or contracts may therefore still cause a visual change.

Percy with Playwright
Percy’s Playwright client documentation describes ignored regions using CSS selectors, XPath, or custom coordinate boundaries, with comparison settings available per region. Prefer a selector or XPath when the element has a stable DOM target; coordinate rectangles can become misaligned when layout shifts. Verify the syntax against the version of the Percy package used in your project. Percy Playwright client README.
Keep visual comparisons meaningful
- Use repeatable page state. Capture the same route, viewport, and relevant application state for baseline and comparison runs. This is practical test hygiene, not a vendor-neutral numeric requirement.
- Review the ignore boundary. A mask that covers a nearby label or a large section can conceal a real regression. Ignore the timestamp, not the surrounding interface by default.
- Separate visual and functional checks. If the date must be fresh, correctly formatted, or semantically correct, assert that in a functional or text check.
- Review diffs before changing baselines. Treat baseline updates as a deliberate approval of an intended change, not a way to silence a failing check.
Common problems and fixes
The timestamp still causes a diff
Confirm that the ignored selector or locator matches the actual timestamp element in the rendered page. Check whether the tool is ignoring the intended region and whether the element has moved or changed size; Chromatic, for example, documents that dimension changes can still trigger diffs.

A real layout change disappears from the report
Narrow the ignore target. If the region includes adjacent labels, padding, or other controls, those pixels may no longer be checked. Keep layout around the timestamp in scope where possible.
The test passes, but the timestamp is wrong
An ignored visual region cannot establish that its text is correct. Add a separate assertion for the expected timestamp format, value, or update behavior.

A coordinate-based mask no longer lines up
Replace the fixed boundary with a stable selector, XPath, or locator when supported. A rectangle tied to screen coordinates may cover a different part of the page after layout changes.
The ignore configuration is rejected or has no effect
Check the syntax and API reference for the installed SDK or package version, confirm the selector resolves on the captured page, and verify that the ignore option is attached to the intended checkpoint. Percy’s cited client page is a repository README, so confirm its instructions against the package version in use.
