A sudden increase in data use is not proof that someone is using your connection as proxyware. Backups, operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, streaming and video calls can all create legitimate spikes. The reliable way to investigate is to inventory every device, measure traffic per device, establish a normal baseline, and then correlate sustained anomalies with endpoint and router changes. Residential proxyware is more likely when an otherwise idle device uploads continuously, contacts unfamiliar destinations, or shows signs of sideloaded software or a compromised router.
What proxyware is and why bandwidth changes matter
A residential proxy is an intermediary that makes web requests appear to originate from another person’s residential internet address. Proxy operators can obtain addresses through software-development-kit partnerships, hidden terms in free VPN applications, compromised internet-of-things devices, malware bundled with pirated or free content, or passive-income applications that promise payment for sharing unused bandwidth. The FBI warns that once a device is compromised, criminals can use its address to hide activity such as fraud, credential attacks or other abuse.
Proxyware can therefore be deliberate, hidden in an application’s terms, or installed as malware. The device may continue to work normally while its connection is used in the background. A household may notice only higher ISP usage, slower internet, a warm streaming box, or unfamiliar entries in a router’s client list.
The FBI’s 2025 BADBOX 2.0 advisory says the botnet consists of millions of infected devices and identifies unexplained or suspicious traffic as a possible indicator. It particularly warns about generic streaming devices advertised as unlocked or offering free content, unofficial app marketplaces, unrecognizable brands, and Android devices that are not Play Protect certified. An indicator alone does not establish that proxyware or a crime is present; it must be interpreted alongside other evidence.

First, rule out normal causes of high usage
Before isolating a device, list ordinary activities that can explain the timing and volume of traffic. A single large download or upload is usually less suspicious than traffic that continues when no one is using the device.
- Cloud photo, file or backup jobs can upload many gigabytes after a camera or computer reconnects.
- Operating-system, game and application updates can download in the background, especially after a device has been offline.
- Video streaming, live television and game downloads can consume substantial downstream data.
- Video meetings and security cameras can generate continuous upstream traffic.
- Cloud synchronization can repeat transfers after a failed or interrupted job.
- A newly installed application may use bandwidth for legitimate content delivery or updates.
Write down when the spike began, whether it is mostly upload or download traffic, and which people or devices were active. This timeline is more useful than a single monthly total because it lets you compare the event with backups, updates, travel, guests or a new device installation.
Build a complete inventory of your home network
Export the router’s client list
Sign in to the router or mesh system and open the page labeled something like Connected devices, Clients, Network map or DHCP leases. Export or photograph the list before disconnecting anything. Record each device name, IP address, MAC address when shown, connection type, and the date and time observed. Labels can be misleading: a phone may appear under a manufacturer name, while a streaming stick may show only a model code.
Identify every entry
Walk through the home and match the list with phones, computers, printers, cameras, smart televisions, streaming sticks, game consoles, speakers, appliances and guests’ devices. Check both Wi-Fi and wired clients. A device that is powered off should not continue to generate traffic; if it remains active in the list, determine whether the router is showing a stale lease or a different device using the same name.
Quarantine unknown clients
For an entry that no household member recognizes, change the Wi-Fi password and use the router’s block, pause or quarantine control if available. Save the client details and router logs first, because blocking can remove useful connection history. Reconnect known devices one at a time with the new password so that an unrecognized client cannot silently return.
Measure traffic per device instead of relying on an ISP total
Use the router or ISP usage dashboard
Open the router’s traffic, bandwidth, usage or statistics view and select a daily range that includes both normal and abnormal periods. Record upload and download totals for each client. Some gateways show only live rates; others retain hourly or monthly totals. If the dashboard cannot distinguish clients, it is still useful for timing, but you will need endpoint tools or a router with per-device accounting to attribute the traffic.

Enable the most useful logs
Where supported, enable flow records, DNS query logs, firewall events and connection history. Flow records show which internal address exchanged data with which destination and how much; DNS logs show the names a device requested; firewall logs show allowed and blocked connections. Export logs to a separate system when possible so that a compromised device cannot erase the only copy.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Government guidance from CISA, the FBI, NSA and partner agencies recommends monitoring flows at ingress and egress points and centralizing logs so events from multiple sources can be correlated. Home users do not need an enterprise platform to apply the principle: preserve router records, endpoint event logs and account alerts with synchronized timestamps.
Distinguish upload from download
Proxy traffic often requires the device to relay requests and responses, so sustained upload is especially worth investigating. It is not conclusive: cameras, video calls, backups and cloud drives also upload continuously. Compare both directions and note whether the device is active, idle or asleep when the traffic occurs.
Establish a household-specific bandwidth baseline
There is no authoritative universal bandwidth threshold that proves proxyware. A number that is abnormal for a small home may be routine for a household with multiple cameras or frequent cloud backups. Instead, record normal behavior for at least several representative days, including a weekend and a work or school day.
| Baseline item | What to record | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Per-device totals | Daily upload and download for each client | Shows which device changes when the household total changes |
| Time pattern | Periods of activity and inactivity | Separates scheduled backups from traffic during an empty home |
| Destinations | Common domains, services or network destinations | Highlights a new destination that appeared with the spike |
| Device state | On, asleep, updating, recording or idle | Prevents normal camera or update traffic being misclassified |
| Network changes | New apps, firmware, passwords or router settings | Provides context for an anomaly that started after a change |
The joint government guidance recommends establishing normal network behavior and defining rules on security appliances to alert on deviations. Use alerts for a change from your baseline rather than a fixed gigabyte limit. For example, an alert can flag an idle streaming device that uploads continuously for several hours or a client whose destination pattern changes abruptly.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Sustained unexplained uploads: traffic continues while the device is idle and no backup, camera recording or meeting is scheduled.
- Repeated unfamiliar destinations: the same device makes persistent connections to destinations that do not match its apps or expected services.
- Traffic outside normal hours: transfers occur when residents are away and the device should be sleeping.
- Unexpected software: a newly installed app, sideloaded package, free-content player or passive-income utility appears near the start of the anomaly.
- Security changes: antivirus, Play Protect or update controls are disabled; an app requests unusual accessibility, VPN or device-administrator privileges.
- Router changes: DNS servers, port forwards, administrator accounts or remote-management settings changed without your action.
- Physical symptoms: the gateway or streaming device overheats, becomes unstable or suffers repeated connectivity problems.
Do not treat a domain name alone as proof. Content-delivery networks, advertising services and shared hosting can look unfamiliar. Confirm the process or app making the connection, the timing, the volume and whether the behavior persists after a clean reboot.
Check the router and gateway for compromise
Review administrator and remote-access settings
In the router’s administration interface, inspect administrator accounts, remote administration, DNS settings, port-forwarding rules, UPnP mappings and firmware status. Compare each setting with a saved configuration or the setup you originally chose. An unexpected administrator account, public management interface or DNS server deserves immediate attention.
Look for the FBI’s listed warning signs
The FBI’s router advisory lists overheating, connectivity problems and administrator settings that changed unexpectedly as signs that a router may be infected. These symptoms also have benign causes, such as failing hardware or an overloaded wireless channel, so record logs and configuration details before resetting.

- Disable remote administration from the internet unless you have a documented need and a protected management method.
- Install the latest firmware available for the exact router model and hardware revision.
- Reboot the router after preserving relevant logs.
- Set a unique, strong administrator password and update the Wi-Fi password if an unknown client was present.
- Replace the router if it is at end of life and no longer receives security updates. The FBI’s 2025 advisory specifically recommends replacing an end-of-life router with an updated model where possible.
A factory reset can remove unauthorized settings, but it also erases logs and configuration. Preserve evidence first, then follow the manufacturer’s reset and reconfiguration procedure. Do not restore an old configuration file if you suspect it contains the unwanted setting.
Inspect suspicious endpoints safely
Computers and phones
Review recently installed applications, browser extensions, VPN profiles, startup items and security settings. Remove software you do not recognize or no longer need, then run a reputable antivirus or malware-removal scan with current definitions. The FBI says antivirus may sanitize a malicious device; if it cannot, reinstalling the operating system may be required. Back up personal files, not executable installers or unknown packages, before a reinstall.
Streaming devices and Android hardware
Be especially cautious with generic streaming hardware advertised as unlocked or offering free content. Avoid unofficial app stores and sideloaded packages. The BADBOX 2.0 advisory warns about Android devices that are not Play Protect certified; check the device’s certification status and install applications only from a trusted store. If the device cannot be updated, certified or reset cleanly, disconnect and replace it rather than returning it to the network.

IoT appliances and cameras
Update firmware, change default credentials and disable services you do not use. Put cameras, televisions and appliances on a separate guest or IoT network when the router supports segmentation. Segmentation limits what an infected appliance can reach and makes its traffic easier to compare with other device classes.
Contain, clean and recover from a likely infection
- Quarantine the device. Pause or disconnect it from the network, but preserve router, DNS and endpoint logs first. If it is business-critical, move it to an isolated network rather than leaving it exposed.
- Document the event. Record dates, device identifiers, destinations, traffic totals, screenshots and any new software or settings. Keep originals read-only where practical.
- Update exposed software. Patch the operating system, applications, router firmware and security tools. Prioritize internet-facing components and vulnerabilities known to be exploited.
- Scan and remove. Run a current malware scan. Uninstall suspicious applications and revoke unnecessary VPN, accessibility or administrator privileges.
- Reinstall when cleaning fails. If the scan cannot sanitize the device or behavior returns after removal, back up documents and perform a clean operating-system reinstall or a vendor recovery procedure.
- Reset credentials. From a known-clean device, change router, email, cloud, streaming and financial-account passwords. Do not reuse the old password, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Rebuild carefully. Restore only trusted files, reinstall from official stores, apply updates, and reconnect the device while watching its traffic against the baseline.
If you suspect account compromise or criminal activity, contact the affected account provider, enable account alerts and report the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Include dates, equipment identifiers and activity details rather than making unsupported accusations about a particular person.
Choose monitoring capabilities that fit your network
A router upgrade, endpoint software and a managed monitoring service solve different parts of the problem. Compare capabilities, not marketing labels.
| Option | Useful capability | Limit | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing router dashboard | Client inventory, basic per-device totals and configuration controls | May retain little history and no detailed flow export | First investigation in a small household |
| Security-capable router or firewall | Flow export, DNS and firewall logs, segmentation, alerts and remote-management controls | Requires setup, storage and interpretation | Households that need historical visibility and control |
| Endpoint security software | Application inventory, malware scanning and host-level events | Does not see every other device or router setting | Computers and phones that can run security tools |
| Managed monitoring service | Centralized log analysis and human review | Ongoing service cost and privacy considerations | People who cannot interpret logs or need continuous oversight |
When evaluating equipment or services, check four things: per-device visibility and flow export; how long firmware is supported; firewall, segmentation and remote-management controls; and whether you can interpret alerts yourself. The joint guidance specifically recommends current device and firmware inventories, segmentation, centralized logs, baselines and anomaly alerts.
Practical investigation scenarios
An overnight upload from a streaming stick
The router shows a streaming stick uploading every night, even when the television is off. First compare the timing with app updates or legitimate casting services. Then inspect installed apps and certification status, preserve logs, disconnect the stick and reset or replace it if it contains sideloaded software or cannot receive trusted updates. Do not reconnect it merely because the television still displays content normally.
A monthly data spike after a computer backup
A computer accounts for nearly all additional upload traffic, but the spike occurs immediately after a scheduled photo backup. Confirm the backup destination, job history and completion time. If traffic stops when the backup finishes and the destinations match the service you selected, the event is consistent with normal synchronization. Continue monitoring rather than labeling the computer proxyware.

Unknown clients return after a Wi-Fi password change
Save the original client list, update router firmware, disable remote administration, change the administrator password and review DNS and port-forwarding settings. If unknown clients return, factory-reset and securely reconfigure the gateway, then reconnect known devices one at a time. An old, unsupported router should be replaced.
Prevent future unexplained usage
- Maintain a current inventory of every device, model, operating system and firmware version.
- Turn on automatic updates where practical and replace equipment that no longer receives security fixes.
- Use unique router and device passwords; change default credentials immediately.
- Disable internet-facing administration and unused services.
- Separate IoT and guest devices from computers and personal accounts with network segmentation.
- Install applications from trusted stores and avoid pirated software, unofficial marketplaces and “free” streaming hardware that promises unlocked content.
- Review router traffic and DNS logs regularly, not only after an ISP warning.
- Keep a written baseline of normal uploads, downloads and scheduled jobs so that an alert has context.
The FBI’s 2026 public-service announcement summarizes the central practice as: “Maintain awareness and monitor internet traffic of home networks.” That means watching for changes while recognizing that legitimate household activity can look large or unfamiliar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a high data bill alone prove that my Wi-Fi is being used as a proxy?
No. Backups, updates, streaming, cameras and cloud synchronization can all cause high usage. Confirm the responsible device, direction, timing and destinations, then correlate several indicators before concluding that proxyware is involved.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if I cannot identify a device in the router list?
Save its IP and MAC details, pause or block it after preserving logs, change the Wi-Fi password, and reconnect known devices one at a time. Review router firmware, administrator accounts, DNS and port-forwarding settings if the unknown client returns.
Is there a bandwidth number that proves proxyware?
No authoritative universal threshold exists. Use a household-specific baseline and investigate sustained, unexplained deviations, especially uploads from an idle device.
Should I factory-reset a suspicious router immediately?
Preserve router and endpoint logs first if possible. Then disable remote administration, update firmware, reboot, set unique credentials and follow the manufacturer’s reset procedure. Replace an end-of-life router that no longer receives security updates.
