To monitor a website visually with changedetection.io, add the page as a watch, use its Playwright-capable browser fetcher when the page needs rendering or interaction, then use Visual Selector to choose the part you want to track. Configure the check interval and notifications, and verify that the selected content reflects the page state you care about. Simple pages may work with the built-in HTTP fetcher; the visual selector workflow requires the browser fetcher.
Choose the right fetcher for the page
changedetection.io documents two approaches: a built-in HTTP fetcher and a browser-based fetcher. Use HTTP when the relevant content is available directly in the page response. Use the browser fetcher when the page depends on JavaScript rendering or requires browser actions. The Visual Selector and Browser Steps workflows require the Playwright-capable browser fetcher. See the official changedetection.io project README for current setup and fetcher information.
- HTTP fetcher: A simpler option for pages whose monitored content is returned without browser rendering.
- Browser fetcher: The appropriate choice for client-rendered pages and pages that require actions such as accepting a cookie prompt, signing in, or entering a search.
Add a watch and prepare the page
- Add a watch for the page URL in the changedetection.io interface.
- Select the Playwright-capable browser fetcher if the page needs JavaScript rendering, Browser Steps, or Visual Selector.
- For interactive pages, configure Browser Steps to perform the necessary actions before change detection—for example, accept a cookie prompt, log in, enter a date, or refine a search.
Browser Steps run before change detection, so prepare the page state first and then refine what is monitored. The project README describes these browser workflows and the Docker and Python self-hosting routes; it also mentions a hosted subscription. Deployment and hosted-service details may change, so consult the project documentation for current options.
Select the part of the page to monitor
After the browser steps are set up, open Visual Selector and choose the relevant page element or region. This narrows the watch to the content whose changes matter instead of treating every page change as equally useful. changedetection.io also documents CSS selectors, XPath, and text, ignore, and extract filters for narrowing monitored content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the captured page and selected content against the state you intended to monitor, especially if the page requires login or other interactions. If the expected element is missing, first check that the browser fetcher is selected and that the preceding browser actions leave the page in the right state.
Set the check interval and notifications
Configure how often the watch checks the page and choose one or more notification destinations. The available settings depend on the configured watch and notification destination; the API documentation describes watch configuration, including URL, fetch backend, interval, and notification settings. Its optional screenshot notification field only applies when the chosen destination supports it. See the official API documentation and the email notification tutorial.

Choose an interval that suits how quickly you need to know about changes and what the target site can reasonably support. After setup, confirm that the watch captures the intended content and that the configured destination can deliver notifications.
Self-host or use the hosted option
The official project README documents Docker and Python installation routes for self-hosting and also mentions a hosted subscription. Choose self-hosting if you want to manage the running instance yourself; a continuously running deployment is needed for checks to happen on schedule. The available evidence does not establish a required computer model or accessory, and hosted subscription pricing is not stated here.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Troubleshooting visual watches
- The selector or page content is missing: Check that the page is being fetched with the Playwright-capable browser backend, then confirm that any Browser Steps complete before selection.
- The watch sees an unrendered or incomplete page: If the relevant content is produced by JavaScript, switch from HTTP to the browser fetcher.
- The selected content is the wrong region: Reopen Visual Selector after the page has reached its intended state. Consider CSS selectors, XPath, or the documented text, ignore, and extract filters to refine the monitored content.
- Login, cookie prompt, or search state is wrong: Add or correct Browser Steps so the page is prepared before change detection, then review the resulting capture and selection.
- No useful notification arrives: Verify the watch’s notification settings and destination. An optional screenshot is only available where the configured destination supports it.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
