To catch a website failure and keep a visual record, schedule a browser-based synthetic check, make it verify a visitor-visible result, capture a screenshot when the check fails, and send an alert with a link to the retained evidence. A simple HTTP check can tell you that a server responded; it cannot prove that a page rendered or that a user completed a critical task.

Choose a monitor that can detect the failure you care about

Start by deciding what “working” means for the affected page or journey. An endpoint returning an accepted status code is useful evidence of reachability, but client-side rendering, content, and interactions may still be broken. Choose the lightest check that can verify the outcome users need.

Check type What it can establish What it does not establish by itself
HTTP uptime check An endpoint returned a configured, accepted response. That the browser rendered the page correctly or that a user can complete a task.
Keyword check A selected phrase is present or absent in the checked response. That client-side behavior, controls, or a full user journey work.
Browser synthetic check A browser can load a page, inspect rendered content, and exercise a defined path. Anything your test does not assert; opening a page alone is not a meaningful health test.
Visual-change monitor A page or selected region has changed visually according to the service’s comparison settings. That a runtime error occurred or that the image was captured at the instant of failure.

For reachability, an HTTP monitor may be enough. Use a browser-based check for client-side rendering, sign-in, checkout, or another interactive flow. A visual-change monitor answers a different question: whether the appearance has changed over time. UptimeRobot describes HTTP status, keyword, and visual-change monitoring; its visual-change feature periodically captures a screenshot and alerts when it detects a change, rather than necessarily taking a diagnostic screenshot because an error occurred. See UptimeRobot’s website-change monitoring documentation.

Build a browser check around a user-visible assertion

Test the smallest critical journey that can reveal the failure, and assert its expected outcome. Better Stack’s official Playwright guide demonstrates setting a mobile viewport, opening a page, and checking that “Sign up” appears; its sign-in example waits for the dashboard URL. These are stronger checks than merely navigating to a homepage. Read Better Stack’s Playwright monitor guide.

Useful assertions

  • Landing page: a primary signup or contact control is visible and usable.
  • Sign-in: valid credentials reach the expected dashboard route.
  • Order flow: a test order reaches a confirmation state, using a safe test environment or transaction path.
  • API-backed page: the request succeeds and returned data includes expected fields or values, not just a successful status.

Keep each scenario focused. A long end-to-end test can reveal more user-impacting failures, but it also has more dependencies and possible flaky steps. Record which step failed so an alert distinguishes, for example, a page-load failure from a missing confirmation state.

Example: a minimal Playwright assertion

The following is a small local test, not a hosted monitoring configuration. It shows the core idea: navigate, assert meaningful content, and save an image on failure. Install Playwright and its browser using the commands in the official Playwright getting-started guide, then save this as monitor.spec.js:

const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');

test('signup page remains usable', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com/signup', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
      timeout: 30000
    });
    await expect(page.getByText('Sign up')).toBeVisible({ timeout: 10000 });
  } catch (error) {
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'failure.png', fullPage: true });
    throw error;
  }
});

Replace the example URL and assertion with your real, stable test target. This local example writes failure.png in the test’s working directory when an assertion or navigation throws; a hosted service needs its own artifact-retention configuration to make that image available after the run. In a production test suite, prefer the test runner’s documented failure-artifact hooks if you need consistent artifacts across all failure types and retries.

Make failure screenshots available to responders

Taking a screenshot, retaining it, and linking it from an alert are separate capabilities. Confirm how the selected monitor handles all three before relying on the image during an incident. Check retention duration, whether each failed run or only selected failures produce an image, whether retries replace or preserve earlier artifacts, and whether responders can access the artifact without a developer’s local machine.

Checkly advertises screenshot captures, video replays, and traces for failed monitors, and describes browser support across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and emulated mobile devices on its synthetic monitoring page. Its available configuration and limits may change. Better Stack documents Playwright scenarios, failed-scenario alerting, retries, run metadata, and secret handling in its Playwright monitor guide; that guide does not establish automatic screenshot capture or alert attachment, so verify those capabilities for the configuration you use.

If you manage the Playwright suite yourself, choose screenshot timing and artifact storage explicitly using Playwright’s screenshot documentation. A screenshot is most useful when its name or surrounding metadata makes clear which site, check, step, and run produced it. Avoid putting credentials, session tokens, or personal information into filenames, alert text, or metadata.

Schedule checks, tune retries, and route alerts

Run the scenario on a schedule appropriate to the impact and recovery time you need. Route failures to an on-call person or team channel, and include the monitor name, failed step, timestamp, location if available, and a link to the retained run evidence. Configure alerts for confirmed failures rather than sending notifications that nobody can triage.

Retries can reduce alerts from transient network or browser faults, but each retry delays confirmation. There is no universal retry count or geography rule: these are service-specific settings. Better Stack’s example uses up to two retries. UptimeRobot’s help article, published July 31, 2026, describes up to three retries for specified failure classes and a 30-second default timeout configurable from 1 to 60 seconds. The same UptimeRobot article says its checks rotate through regions without requiring multiple locations to agree. Treat those as UptimeRobot-specific behavior, not general monitoring defaults. See UptimeRobot’s monitoring-settings guide.

For a business-critical flow, decide deliberately whether a single failed run should page someone or whether a retry should confirm it first. For lower-impact checks, a retry may reduce noise. Whatever the choice, ensure that the alert still arrives soon enough to be actionable.

Protect test credentials and sensitive data

Authenticated checks often need credentials, cookies, or tokens. Store secrets in the monitoring platform’s secret or environment-variable facility rather than hard-coding them in a test or repository. Better Stack documents environment variables for scenario secrets and warns that metadata values are not redacted in its Playwright monitor guide.

  • Use a dedicated, least-privilege monitoring account rather than a personal account.
  • Keep passwords and tokens out of screenshots, logs, metadata, and alert messages.
  • Use test data and a non-destructive path for flows that could place orders, send messages, or change customer records.
  • Review who can access retained screenshots and how long those artifacts remain available.

When an alert arrives, use the evidence to isolate the fault

  1. Check the failed assertion and step. A missing control points to a different problem than a navigation timeout or an unexpected destination.
  2. Open the screenshot and other run artifacts. Look for a blank page, error message, consent overlay, stalled spinner, or content that differs from the expected state.
  3. Compare with the run context. Check timestamp, browser, viewport, and location where the service exposes them. A failure limited to one environment may indicate a compatibility or regional issue.
  4. Retry manually with safe credentials. Reproduce the same path without exposing production secrets in a shared recording or incident thread.
  5. Fix the user-impacting cause, then verify the assertion. A green HTTP response alone is not proof that the browser journey recovered.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a page on demand rather than a scheduled browser assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a substitute for a scheduled synthetic check: use your monitor to decide when a failure occurred, and use a capture request when you need an image of the page.

For example, save a WebP capture of a page with cURL:

Troubleshooting common monitoring failures

The check passes, but users still see a broken page

The monitor may only be checking HTTP status or may assert content that is too generic. Change it to assert a stable, user-visible element or a meaningful journey outcome. If the page depends on client-side rendering, use a browser check.

The screenshot is missing after a failed run

Capture, retention, and alert linkage may be configured separately. Check the monitor’s artifact settings and failure conditions, then confirm that the alert links to a retained artifact. For self-managed Playwright, ensure the screenshot-writing code runs for the failure type you need and that the artifact directory is uploaded or retained by your runner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monitor fails intermittently

Inspect the failing step and run context before adding retries. A transient network problem, slow dependency, unstable selector, or variable third-party content can look alike in an alert. Use a stable assertion, set a timeout appropriate to the step, and choose retry behavior with the delay-to-alert trade-off in mind.

The alert is late or arrives too often

Review the schedule, timeout, and retry policy together. More retries can reduce transient-failure alerts but postpone confirmation; fewer retries can notify sooner while increasing noise. Tune to the impact of the monitored flow rather than copying another vendor’s sample setting.

The check exposes secrets or user data

Move credentials to the platform’s secret facility, remove sensitive values from metadata and alert payloads, and use a dedicated test account. Review screenshot retention and access because images can capture rendered personal or account information.

Operational checklist

  • The monitor matches the failure mode: endpoint, content, rendered page, or visual drift.
  • The browser scenario asserts a real user outcome rather than only successful navigation.
  • Failed-run screenshots are captured, retained, and accessible from the incident workflow.
  • Timeouts and retries balance confirmation speed against transient noise.
  • Alerts reach an owner and include the failed step and available evidence link.
  • Secrets, metadata, test data, and artifact access are handled safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a screenshot enough to prove a website is healthy?

No. It records appearance at one point in a run. A browser assertion or other explicit check is needed to determine whether the expected page or user outcome worked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a visual-change alert tell me when a website errors?

Not necessarily. A visual-change monitor detects differences against a baseline; it is distinct from a browser check that fails an assertion and captures diagnostic evidence.

Should I take screenshots on every monitoring run?

That depends on the service’s artifact controls, storage, and incident needs. For this workflow, ensure a failed run produces retained evidence; routine captures may be useful for visual history but are a separate choice.
