Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use visual regression tests: capture important dashboard states at fixed viewports, compare each new screenshot with an approved baseline, and review differences before accepting them. Playwright Test can do this locally with screenshot assertions; Chromatic offers a hosted review workflow that integrates with Playwright. Keep functional tests too: a screenshot can reveal a layout change, but it cannot prove that a filter or button still works.
What visual monitoring catches—and what it does not
Visual regression testing detects changes in rendered appearance by comparing a fresh screenshot with a reference image. For a dashboard, that can help catch a moved chart, a missing label, a changed table layout, or a control that has become hard to see.
A difference is a signal to investigate, not proof of a defect. A deployment may intentionally change the interface, while a screenshot that looks unchanged may still hide broken behavior. Pair visual comparisons with functional tests for interactions such as filters, navigation, and table sorting.
Choose which dashboard states to monitor
Begin with a small set of screens users rely on rather than trying to capture every possible combination. Include states that exercise meaningful dashboard content:

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- A default dashboard view with its primary charts and summary values.
- Important table states, such as a populated table or a relevant empty state.
- Filters or navigation selections that change what users see.
- Any other high-value state where a visual regression would impair a common task.
Expand coverage when the differences produced by the initial set are useful to review. If every run produces changes caused by random data or unstable rendering, fix those conditions before adding more screenshots.
Make captures repeatable
Comparisons are meaningful only when the new capture and baseline represent comparable states. Use the same viewport and establish a predictable page state. For dashboards whose data changes, use repeatable fixtures or test data so ordinary value changes do not overwhelm the visual signal. This is implementation guidance: the tools provide screenshot comparison controls, but stable dashboard data must be arranged by your application and test setup.
Also keep the route, selected filters, and other relevant state consistent between runs. Decide which dynamic content should be stabilized or excluded from the comparison, and avoid updating a baseline just to silence differences you have not understood.

Option 1: Compare screenshots with Playwright Test
Playwright Test documents screenshot assertions such as await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png'). The assertion compares the current rendering with a reference snapshot. This approach keeps the test and its reference images in your repository, where changes can be reviewed alongside code.

- Add a screenshot assertion. Use
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png')at the point in the test where the page is in the intended state. - Create and review the reference snapshot. Consult the Playwright screenshot snapshots guide for the documented snapshot workflow and options. Commit approved reference images to version control.
- Run the comparison in your test workflow. Review any reported differences rather than treating them as automatic failures to ignore.
- Update the reference only after approval. When a UI change is intentional, use Playwright’s documented update-snapshots option, inspect the resulting image, and commit the reviewed change.
This is a natural fit when your team wants snapshot files in its existing repository and can review baseline changes through version control.
Option 2: Review changes with hosted visual testing
Chromatic documents integration with Playwright: tests capture UI states, and new snapshots are compared with baselines in Chromatic’s cloud review workflow. Its documentation covers running visual tests in CI and configuring viewport widths and diff sensitivity.

- Connect the Playwright workflow. Follow Chromatic’s Playwright integration documentation to add visual testing to the existing suite.
- Run visual tests in CI. Capture the selected dashboard states as part of the relevant test workflow.
- Review flagged changes in the hosted interface. Chromatic’s documentation says, “If changes are detected, you will be prompted to verify that they are intentional or fix any errors.” See its visual testing documentation.
- Adjust capture settings where needed. Use the documented viewport and diff-sensitivity configuration to make comparisons appropriate for your UI.
Chromatic is worth considering when your team wants hosted snapshot comparison and a shared review interface. The cited documentation establishes these workflow features, not a price or plan limit.
Playwright snapshots or hosted review?
| Decision | Playwright local snapshots | Hosted review with Chromatic |
|---|---|---|
| Where baselines and reviews live | Reference screenshots are kept in the test repository and changes are reviewed and committed. | Snapshot comparison and review take place in the hosted service. |
| Working with Playwright | Playwright Test documents native screenshot assertions. | Chromatic documents an integration that extends existing Playwright tests. |
| Capture controls established in the cited documentation | Playwright documents screenshot comparison options in its test guide. | Chromatic documents viewport settings and diff sensitivity. |
Choose according to where you want baselines to live and how reviewers should inspect differences. Use a diff as the start of a review, not as the decision itself.
How to investigate and resolve a difference
- Inspect the changed region. Identify which component or content shifted, appeared, disappeared, or changed style.
- Check whether the capture was comparable. Confirm viewport, route, selected state, and test data match the approved baseline conditions.
- Classify the change. If it is unintended, fix the application or test setup. If it is an approved UI change, review and update the baseline through the chosen workflow.
- Check behavior separately. Run functional tests for the affected controls and user flows; visual approval alone does not verify them.
Troubleshooting noisy or misleading results
Differences appear on every run
First verify that the test is rendering the same dashboard state each time. Changing data, filters, or viewport can make screenshots incomparable. Establish repeatable test data and capture conditions before weakening the comparison or accepting new baselines.

A change seems intentional, but the comparison still fails
Review the actual changed region, then update the reference only after the team approves the visual change. For Playwright, use its documented update-snapshots workflow and commit the reviewed snapshot. For Chromatic, inspect and handle the change in its hosted review flow.
The screenshot passes but a dashboard control is broken
That is a coverage gap between appearance and behavior. Add or retain functional tests for the control’s action and expected result; an unchanged screenshot cannot establish that interaction works.
A whole layout changes at a different viewport
Ensure the baseline and current capture use the same intended viewport. If the dashboard must work at multiple widths, configure and review those widths deliberately rather than comparing unlike captures.
